Background and History
Noble upbringing and religious training
Laxus was born into the Shepard family, an ancient Royal Capital noble lineage. As a daughter without inheritance rights, she entered the Church of Light’s path rather than remaining in her family’s household. After showing aptitude following her baptism, she left home at seven to train under Crouch, whom she regards as her true father. 135 426
Crouch considered her an excellent theologian but an insufficiently experienced priest. Seeking to prove herself, Laxus accepted a posting as the priestess of Eagle Town Church. 6
Eagle Town priestess
Laxus initially arrives in Eagle Territory weakened from excessive use of Divine Power. Raven saves and shelters her, then persuades her to accept his account of Baron Donald’s death; she agrees to help preserve Donald’s reputation. 6
As Eagle Town’s sole priestess and doctor, she rings the church bell, cleans the church herself, leads prayers and ceremonies, treats injuries and illnesses, distributes medicine to villagers unable to pay, and teaches them to recognize herbs. 12 121
She becomes Raven’s early collaborator. Laxus suggests promoting his wine through the Church, helping establish Angel’s Tear, and later obtains a second-tier mage potion, cultivation methods, and reference books for him. 12 32 39
Nord Province campaign
Laxus accompanies Raven’s forces into the Nord Province despite the devastation caused by the Hand of Death Cult. She neither delays the march nor burdens the troops, earning Raven’s respect for her composure. 125
When Death Knights ambush the allied force, she casts Seal of Purity, turning much of the undead squadron to dust and stabilizing the battle. 132
During the campaign, she reveals that she was raised for the priesthood from childhood and begins sharing her past more openly with Raven. 135
Conflict with the Church of Light
Laxus gradually loses faith in the Church as an institution after witnessing clergy place their interests above those of ordinary believers. She comes to believe Raven’s improvements to Eagle Territory better embody the Lord of Light’s teachings than many Church officials do. 198
Her relationship with Raven draws the attention of Crouch and the Church’s Inquisition. To protect her from the Inquisition’s attempt to discredit Crouch, Raven agrees to marry into the Fox Family; believing herself betrayed, Laxus leaves Eagle Territory heartbroken. 219
At Raven’s trial, Laxus defies Church pressure and testifies that he is a “wise, benevolent, brave, decisive, and responsible noble.” She swears that her testimony is entirely sincere despite the risk of excommunication and damage to Crouch’s faction. 405
Return and later service
After years apart, Laxus reveals that she was poisoned by the Tree of Blasphemy during her travels near the Ancient Forest and believes she has only five years left to live. She returns to Raven while continuing to oppose corruption within the Church. 426
She saves Raven from the Blood Curse with Golden Tree Sap, extending his lifespan to thirty-one years. 437
Later, she leads 127 Divine Spellcasters in a territory-wide literacy campaign. Rather than limiting their work to healing and blessings, she assigns them to villages and towns to teach children reading and writing. 450
Raven builds a grand church in Eagle Town in her name. Despite her conflicted feelings toward faith and the Church, she continues serving the common people through healing and exorcisms. 452 600
After Crouch’s death, Laxus asks Raven for a Mother of Battle Potion so she can eventually seek revenge against the Elven Empress Daiyunyi. Raven subsequently proposes to her, and she accepts. 657
Appearance
Laxus is a strikingly beautiful young woman with golden hair, sapphire-blue eyes, fair skin, and a gentle, noble bearing. Her appearance is frequently compared to an angel or a figure made of light. 121 132 426
- Usually wears simple white priestess robes, reflecting her religious office and self-sufficient lifestyle. 12 575
- Wears her golden hair in braids, a ponytail, or loose over her shoulders depending on the occasion. 32 121 132
- Her eyes turn majestic gold while channeling powerful Divine Power. 132
- Has also worn modest common dresses when traveling outside her priestly duties. 32 186
Personality
Laxus is compassionate, diligent, and unusually egalitarian for a Church official. She treats poor villagers with the same care as wealthier believers, freely provides medicine when necessary, and prefers doing church work herself rather than relying on divine spells for every task. 12 121
Though initially sheltered and inexperienced with ordinary life, she is intellectually curious and observant. Time spent with Raven in Monen City broadens her understanding of poverty, prices, social customs, and the realities of urban life. 158
Her devotion to the Lord of Light remains central to her identity, but it does not make her obedient to Church authorities. She is willing to oppose the Inquisition, accept excommunication, and testify against its wishes when she believes the Church has abandoned its stated ideals. 405 426
Laxus is gentle but not passive. She warns Raven when she foresees danger, challenges his choices when necessary, and ultimately resolves to stop waiting for him when his absence becomes unbearable. 74 575
Abilities & Skills
Divine Spellcasting
Laxus wields Divine Power granted through prayer to the Lord of Light. Unlike mages, Divine Spellcasters recite prayers rather than magical chants and primarily employ Holy Light. 39
- Began the story as a Second-tier Divine Spellcaster. 6
- Later recognized as a Fourth-tier Divine Spellcaster capable of commanding other clergy. 450
- Can heal injuries, assist the sick, cleanse corruption, and perform blessings. 121 132

Seal of Purity
A second-tier divine art especially effective against undead and death aura. 132
- Condenses golden light through her staff before striking the ground with a spectral staff manifestation. 132
- Annihilates more than half of an attacking Death Knight force in a single casting. 132

Exorcism and purification
Laxus performs purification rituals against evil spirits and demonic possession. 440
- Identifies and compels hostile spirits to reveal their names through scripture and Holy Light. 440
- Uses Supreme Judgment to destroy an evil spirit rather than merely forcing it back to Hell. 440
- Prioritizes saving possessed victims even when the required method is more harmful or taxing. 440
Divination
Laxus can conduct divinations through her faith, though she does not always disclose their exact results. 74
- Foresees danger surrounding Raven’s planned attack on the Bloody Highlands. 74
- Uses her findings to urge caution rather than claim that fate is unavoidable. 74
