Devil–Abyssal hybrid hatchling 49 50 Hatched from an abyssal shell with intertwined devil and Abyssal Creature wills. It possessed neither useful devil contracts nor meaningful combat power.
Strengthened materialized Will Life 63 Digested formal-level Negative Energy, making its formerly chaotic body more substantial and raising its strength to, or beyond, Adam’s weakened state.
Crude Negative Energy user 70 Learned to fire Negative Energy as shockwaves within three days; Adam tested the magic directly against his own defenses.
Virus-based Changeling 133 147 Adam destroyed its manifested Abyssal Form and used Abyssal tissue in viral experiments. The Devil later merged completely with Garfield, gaining a true vessel and radically mutative biology.
Electric-type Extraordinary Creature / Magic Staff 151 Its virus cells were elementalized, arranged into Magic Arrays, and transformed into an azure Magic Staff. Its will became the staff’s Artifact Spirit.
Space Titan transformation initiated 246 247 Adam prepared a Mithril-alloy body inscribed with gravity-related Magic Arrays and began using Energy Blocks and Origin Fire to transform it into a Space Titan.

Background / History

Adam first identified the egg in his possession as a devil hatchling after it resisted Negative Energy and devoured tormented souls. When it hatched, the newborn creature regarded Adam as its Master, Black Mage as an untouchable strong person, and other people as food. Its mind was divided between its devil instincts and an Abyssal Creature’s hunger. 48 49

Adam discovered that it was an abnormal hybrid with neither the practical contracts associated with devils nor the combat strength expected of Abyssal Creatures. He bound it through a Master-Servant Contract, kept it in his laboratory, and considered its unusual birth its only worthwhile research value. 50

After consuming formal-level Negative Energy, the Devil temporarily became free when its soul-chain disappeared. It immediately attempted to threaten Adam, but reconsidered after realizing that an ownerless Other Plane Creature saturated with Negative Energy would not survive on Mage Continent. It chose to reform the Master-Servant Contract with Adam. 63

During the Fifth Element Holy Tower trial, Adam used the Devil as a scout, assassin, and agent of disruption. Its later viral mutations enabled it to control infected bodies, collapse Anti-Mage factions, and accumulate Merit Points for Adam. 117 130 136 138

Adam eventually reshaped the Devil repeatedly: first through Abyssal tissue and virus experiments, then by merging it with Garfield into a Changeling, and finally by turning its elementalized viral body into a Magic Staff. 133 147 151

Appearance

The Devil has no fixed natural shape. Its original manifested form is an irregular, chaotic body with eye-like structures capable of firing gray energy. It can collapse into mist or a puddle-like mass, imitate humanoid appearances, and assume the likeness of other people. 63 73 117

  • Often adopts a humanoid form, including the appearance of a woman. 50
  • Can imitate Adam’s appearance, though its mannerisms give the disguise away. 73
  • Can disperse into Negative Energy or mist for covert movement. 117
  • As Adam’s Magic Staff, it becomes an azure staff half Adam’s height, with electric light flowing across its surface. 151

Personality

The Devil is theatrical, vain, lecherous, and fond of calling itself “Uncle Garfield” or “Grand Duke Garfield.” It enjoys flattery, luxury, manipulation, and the fear it can inspire, but its bravado frequently collapses when confronted by Adam or powerful mages. 69 73 150 216

It is fundamentally pragmatic. Although it resents Adam’s control and repeatedly dreams of freedom, it understands that Adam is its safest means of survival in the Mage World. It therefore submits whenever the consequences of defiance become clear. 63 116

Despite its self-serving nature, the Devil has shown genuine concern for Adam, including trying to intervene when Adam endangered himself through obsessive research. 50

Abilities & Skills

Shapeshifting and Intangibility

As a Will Life with a mutable viral vessel, the Devil can change form, conceal itself, and pass through ordinary physical obstacles.

  • Disperses into mist or blends into ambient Negative Energy for infiltration. 117
  • Can mimic humanoid forms and Adam’s appearance. 50 73
  • Ordinary materials cannot block it, making it effective at assassinating weaker apprentices. 130
  • Specialized barriers can prevent it from entering protected locations. 117

Negative Energy Magic

The Devil innately commands Negative Energy, though its early practical control was limited.

  • Fires Negative Energy as crude shockwaves or impacts. 70 121
  • Its attacks can drive weak targets into madness; one Anti-Mage apprentice mutilated himself after being struck. 131
  • Can neutralize incoming Negative Energy attacks. 121
  • Its Negative Energy aura makes it conspicuous and dangerous as an ownerless creature on Mage Continent. 63

Contracts and Soul Connection

The Master-Servant Contract binds the Devil to Adam and gives Adam direct authority over it.

  • Adam can summon, punish, restrain, and compel the Devil through the contract. 50 69 121
  • Adam can connect to the Devil’s senses for real-time reconnaissance. 117
  • The Devil can attempt contracts with others, but cannot form a slave contract with creatures whose souls are too twisted. 121 203
  • It created a clone and signed a Reverse Symbiosis Contract, allowing resurrection at the Rex Mage Club if it dies. 221

Viral Infection and Control

Following Adam’s experiments, the Devil gained control over infected bodies and used them as a force during the Holy Tower trial.

  • Directed infected bodies to overwhelm three Anti-Mage families in a week. 136
  • Manipulated infected creatures to attack fleeing Anti-Mages and force Trial Apprentices into combat. 138
  • Its unauthorized actions earned Adam thousands of Merit Points but made Adam a target for other Trial Apprentices. 138

Inheritance Memory and Languages

The Devil possesses fragmented inherited knowledge from devils and Abyssal Creatures.

  • Knows that devils and Abyssal Creatures considered the Mage Plane an enemy that could not be provoked. 50
  • Recalled that only beings above Level Five can decipher Other Plane coordinates through a medium. 86
  • Possesses an innate ability to read languages, developed by devils for interspecies trade. 203
  • Its memories are incomplete and often lack explanations for the knowledge it recalls. 50 86

Magic Staff Form

Adam transformed the Devil into an electric Magic Staff containing multiple internal Magic Arrays.

  • Functions as Adam’s auxiliary casting tool and Artifact Spirit. 151
  • Contains arrays for Magnetic Field amplification, electromagnetic conversion, and electrothermal conversion. 151
  • Improves energy gathering and accelerates large-scale spells that normally require lengthy construction. 151
  • Allows Adam’s spell output to surpass the first-level boundary and reach the second level. 151
  • Retains the ability to move freely when not being used in battle. 152

Relationships

  • Adam — Master, contract holder, experimenter, and long-term companion. Their relationship is defined by Adam’s absolute authority, the Devil’s fear-driven loyalty, and occasional mutual concern. 50 63 151
  • James and Frank — Adam’s laboratory companions who bullied the Devil after it was allowed to remain in the laboratory. 50
  • Black Mage — Identified the creature as a devil hatchling and did not prevent Adam from observing its first encounter with a human. 48 49
  • Black Cloud — The Devil attempted to intimidate the unicorn-like beast and was punished by Adam. 87

Story Role / Major Arcs

Hatching and Laboratory Servitude

The Devil hatches from the abyssal shell Adam acquired during the conflict with the Om Family. Adam immediately identifies its hybrid nature, contracts it, and keeps it as a potential research subject rather than a valued servant. 48 50

Recovery and Negative Energy Training

After Adam’s near-fatal advancement incident, the Devil is strengthened by formal-level Negative Energy and briefly attempts rebellion. It returns to Adam’s service after recognizing the danger of freedom on Mage Continent, then learns rudimentary Negative Energy Magic for Adam’s experiments. 63 70

Fifth Element Holy Tower Trial

The Devil performs reconnaissance in Koyin City, carries out assassinations, reveals its hidden combat potential, and later directs infected creatures to devastate Anti-Mage forces. Its actions substantially increase Adam’s Merit Points while escalating hostility from other Trial Apprentices. 117 121 130 138

Changeling and Magic Staff Transformation

Adam uses the Devil’s Abyssal nature and viral mutations as the basis for biological experimentation. The Devil becomes a Changeling with a true vessel, then endures elementalization and internal Magic Array construction to become Adam’s electric Magic Staff. 133 147 151

Explorer Mage and Titan Plane Service

The Devil continues accompanying Adam on Other Plane missions, contributes knowledge of alien races and languages, and prepares contingencies against death through a Reverse Symbiosis Contract. Adam later selects it as the vessel for a planned Space Titan transformation. 203 221 246 247

Trivia

  • The Devil named itself Garfield and used the identity to socialize with female apprentices. 69
  • It considers itself a refined devil and initially objected to directly slaughtering enemies with raw energy instead of using contracts to harvest souls. 121
  • It spent six months indulging in Meyer City with one thousand units of Aether Crystals before Adam forcibly returned it to laboratory work. 150
