293. The Double Room
The indigenous people of Pohnpei Island are Micronesians. Like other indigenous peoples on many Pacific islands, they have dark brown skin, curly hair, and tall stature. Their ancestors migrated to these islands from Southeast Asia and other places four thousand years ago, forming a unique cultural atmosphere.
In a restaurant on the island, Lu Ban is enjoying a local specialty, tuna.
Tuna has a rich and delicious flesh and can be eaten raw, grilled, or boiled into soup. The way it is eaten on the island is more primitive, which is to grill it over a fire and eat it with bay leaves and other ingredients. When in doubt, just grill meat and that's it.
Even after grilling, the fatty tuna still had a much higher oil content than ordinary fish. Lu Ban stopped eating after eating two large pieces because it was too oily.
"Woof!"
The corgi at his feet was circling around Lu Ban. Pets are not allowed in restaurants, but Lu Ban had given so many that the owner had tacitly allowed the dog in since there were no other customers.
Lu Ban picked up a piece of tuna belly from the plate, put it on a serving plate, and placed it on the ground.
The corgi wagged its short tail as it approached the plate, looked at the food, and then at Lu Ban.
"Eat."
Lu Ban spoke.
Only then did the Corgi finally lower its head and begin to wolf down its food.
"She's quite well-behaved."
Feng Yu offered this assessment.
Her movements as she ate tuna were very elegant. Although Lu Ban knew that it was a bit too much to use such an adjective to describe Feng Yu, Feng Yu's eating manner and posture could indeed only be described as elegant.
Perhaps when Lu Ban sees how Feng Yu disposed of the Mass of Flesh on the plane, he will also associate it with elegance.
"The Hound can take us through time, does that mean they can take us directly back to before the Starship disaster?"
Lu Ban watched the Corgi devour its food and suddenly had a whimsical idea.
"Hound are naturally sensitive to time travelers, monsters that hunt them. You think you can have them take you through time? Dream on."
Feng Yu put down his knife and fork.
"If you want to travel through time, besides using the power of silence, there is another way, but believe me, you wouldn't want to try it."
"What method?"
Lu Ban was curious.
"In a foreign land, a foreign land you don't know about, there exists a race that lives by stealing other people's time. Once you are captured by those creatures, your time will be stolen, ranging from a few seconds to one to three years. At the same time, you will be transported to a random point in the past. This is the way to travel through time."
Feng Yu explained earnestly.
"This knowledge doesn't seem to have caused any pollution?"
Lu Ban listened to Feng Yu's story but didn't feel any change in himself.
"The level of contamination from this knowledge is slightly lower than what you've experienced. You were able to face the one in the Pleiades and survive. This level of knowledge can no longer corrupt you."
Feng Yu answered.
"Is there any other similar knowledge? I have plenty of time, I can listen slowly."
Lu Ban immediately said.
Since I won't be affected by it anyway, I might as well listen.
"."
Feng Yu was speechless.
Lu Ban's behavior of taking advantage of every opportunity to profit is truly rare.
"Let's put those things aside for now. Having Hound will make our next move much easier."
Feng Yu decided to ignore Lu Ban's attempt to take advantage of the situation.
"By the way, what should we do next?"
Lu Ban only knew that he was coming to Pohnpei Island, but the Starship had already sunk and the tourists and crew had all left. Did he have to dive down to the bottom of the sea to explore the wreckage of the Starship?
He does have the ability to Underwater Breathing and can dive for as long as he wants, but is it really necessary to come here specifically to confirm this?
Moreover, Feng Yu initially said he wanted to show Lu Ban a deeper secret of the alien world. What is that?
"Two nights from now, the island should be somewhat different."
Feng Yu answered.
With flights running every three days, now is indeed the closest we can get to Pohnpei Island on time two nights from now.
After having lunch, Lu Ban and Feng Yu booked a double room at the only hotel on the island.
"So, why is it a room with a double bed?"
Lu Ban walked into the room and looked at Feng Yu with some confusion, feeling that the hotel owner's gaze towards him earlier was a bit off.
"To deal with potential problems, it's best if the two of us work together, each in our own room. If we encounter danger at night, we simply won't be able to keep an eye on each other."
Feng Yu replied, while putting down his luggage.
"If you feel shy, you can tell me in advance and I will make an excuse to leave."
"?"
Lu Ban felt that he should be the one to say those words.
The two rested at the hotel for a while and went out to find food in the evening. After dinner, it was completely dark. The stars that could not be seen in big cities were now dotting the inky black sky. Lu Ban looked around but did not find any familiar stars. He looked towards the center of the island.
There, thousands of artificial islands form the massive Nan Madol ruins. The huge and heavy bricks now appear eerily green under the starlight. Scientifically speaking, this is because these Stone contain fluorite, which was used by Stone kings who wished to create a ghostly kingdom for themselves.
However, such ruins appear particularly eerie at night.
Those collapsed or damaged buildings, emitting a ghostly glow in the woods, are like cities of the dead. In fact, most of these remaining buildings are tombs, the places where the remains of those once invincible monarchs were placed after their deaths. However, during the war, this was the front line of the Pacific War. The flames of war swept across the entire island after the raiders, and even the tombs of the once supreme rulers could not escape destruction.
Over the next two days, Lu Ban and Feng Yu examined the ruins on Pohnpei Island. These ruins did not possess the cursed power of legend. Although they still did not understand how these buildings were constructed, compared to the wonders sculpted by the mighty forces of otherworldly realms, these structures, which could be completed simply by humans accumulating time, were merely ordinary.
Of course, although the two slept in the same room, nothing of the fan service that is often seen in movies happened.
Rather, Lu Ban strongly suspected that if he were to unfortunately witness Feng Yu's "fan service" scenes, they would likely be filled with eyeballs, tentacles, and indescribable horror.
He wasn't sure if the benefits were good or not, but they certainly seemed very fortunate.
As for the Hound, Lu Ban named it "Laika" in memory of the little dog that made important contributions to mankind. It was very well-behaved, neither needing to be walked every day nor seemingly needing to relieve itself.
Every night, it would turn into black mist for a period of time and disappear, only to return after about half an hour, looking as if it had eaten and drunk its fill.
Lu Ban didn't know what it had eaten, and hoped it wouldn't get an upset stomach.
Two days later, to Lu Ban's surprise, the sky over Pohnpei Island, which had been calm and sunny, suddenly turned gloomy.
Upon arriving at the front desk, I found the television, whose signal was interfering, was playing the news.
A typhoon is coming.
