First Appearance Chapter 59

Background

The original Feng Yu was Lu Ban's former university class monitor and squad leader, though the two had barely spoken during university. She was reportedly killed in a flash flood involving a film crew in March. When Lu Ban investigated, the Feng Yu who had been contacting him admitted that she was not the woman he knew in the ordinary sense, but insisted that she was still Feng Yu: she possessed Feng Yu's appearance, memories, mannerisms, and responses. She withheld her full nature because knowledge itself risks contamination. 59 170 260

She identifies herself as a Traveler who enters local communities while moving through different realms. Her race once maintained a shared repository of Otherworld Anchor Points, allowing its members to share coordinates between worlds; that system has since been lost, leaving her dependent on the Anchor Points she personally remembers. 170 479

Feng Yu has witnessed numerous collapsing civilizations and Otherworlds: realms that chose collective slumber, abandoned flesh for steel and electricity, or degenerated into mindless swarms. Her experience informs both her detachment from ordinary human limits and her concern about the spreading awakening of Old Ones. 478 819

Appearance

Feng Yu generally presents herself as an attractive young woman with a gentle, approachable demeanor, though her appearance conceals a profoundly non-human nature. 169 170

  • Slightly lightened short hair, small ears, and a gentle smile. 169
  • Often wears contemporary feminine clothing, including knit sweaters, skirts, dresses, vests, lace socks, and small leather shoes. 169 290
  • Has a subtle charm that becomes more noticeable on closer inspection rather than being immediately striking. 169
  • Can alter her form, including assuming the body of a four-eyed Eye Demon. 484
  • Her non-human body can dissolve into white smoke, enter another being, or open into a tentacled mouth large enough to swallow Lu Ban and a basin. 299 520

Personality

Feng Yu is warm, teasing, and conspicuously nurturing toward Lu Ban. She regularly checks on his health, criticizes his dangerous filming habits, cooks for him, and treats his home like her own. Her concern often takes the form of maternal nagging, even though she firmly rejects Lu Ban calling her “Mom.” 169 215 367 479

Her affection is balanced by a chillingly alien practicality. Feng Yu considers bodies replaceable containers, discusses consuming enemies or taking possession of corpses without much hesitation, and can calmly explain catastrophic cosmic threats over meals. 292 300 489 559

Despite this detachment, she is cautious with dangerous knowledge. She refuses to reveal information that could contaminate Lu Ban, recognizes when discussing an Old One is itself hazardous, and favors investigation over recklessly confronting a Weirdness. 170 457 591

Abilities & Skills

Body Transfer and Identity Replacement

Feng Yu's race can abandon a contaminated body and transfer consciousness into another container, allowing it to acquire dangerous knowledge while limiting the physical cost of Pollution. 292

  • Can use bodies of other races and completely replace an individual. 292
  • Retains a replaced person's memories well enough to imitate them without others noticing. 489
  • Treats the body as expendable while preserving consciousness as the essential self. 292
  • Can consume creatures to obtain their memories, knowledge, and Pollution. 307 489
  • Body replacement does not eliminate all mental contamination; her race simply possesses a different threshold for enduring it. 292

Biological Reconstruction

Feng Yu can enter and manipulate another being's body with extraordinary precision.

  • Entered Lu Ban as smoke and protected him from the surrounding rain while enabling him to perceive the true nature of the ruins and its inhabitants. 299
  • Repaired Lu Ban's damaged nerves, muscles, blood, cells, and brain using a silver fluid-like mist. 300
  • Absorbed Lu Ban after his body was annihilated, then restored him through a racial method rather than a Time Worm. 520 522
  • Can reconstruct bodies in a manner Lu Ban compares to repairing corpses. 300

Inter-Realm Travel

Feng Yu travels between Otherworlds through Anchor Points, the stable constants of realms whose ordinary temporal and spatial coordinates are unreliable. 479

  • Can take others between realms by bringing them into her body during transit. 479
  • Relies on remembered Anchor Points after her race's shared coordinate database was lost. 479
  • Describes herself as a “stowaway” able to travel where ordinary people cannot freely go. 477
  • Has traveled through far more realms than Lu Ban can imagine. 478

Temporal Perception

As a member of a time-seeing race, Feng Yu can sense disruptions in time and space. 519

  • Detected a disturbance in the flow of time that physically affected her. 519
  • Possesses premonitions concerning dangerous events, though she avoids explaining them when doing so could constrain fate. 884

Anomaly Knowledge

Feng Yu is exceptionally knowledgeable about Weirdnesses, Erosion, Old Ones, and the rules governing anomalous spaces.

  • Explains that anomalies possess Rules which constrain both victims and the anomalies themselves. 209
  • Can sometimes disregard an anomaly's Rules while insisting that Lu Ban must obey them. 209
  • Identifies Erosion as the source of anomalies and states that only stronger Erosion can suppress them. 209
  • Deciphered fragments of an ancient script on the Starlight temple door and identified the temple as a seal. 308
  • Warns that sharing knowledge of Old Ones can be dangerous even between experienced travelers. 591

Racial Protection and Transformation

Feng Yu displays several non-human defensive traits.

  • Rain and light naturally avoid her, forming no visible barrier; she calls this a racial talent. 299
  • Can transfer this protection to Lu Ban while inhabiting him. 299
  • Transformed into an Eye Demon to spread Lu Ban's “Promised Paradise” rumor in the City of Dusk. 484
  • Can suppress newly developing Pollution within her own body. 911

Relationships

  • Lu Ban — Former classmate and squad leader identity, later his closest adviser, traveling companion, caretaker, and occasional rescuer. Their bond develops through shared meals, missions, and mutual trust despite Feng Yu's inhuman nature. 170 215 292 520 884
  • Qin Tiantian — Friendly acquaintance who joins Feng Yu and Lu Ban for meals. Feng Yu encourages Qin Tiantian to look after Lu Ban and later returns her scarf after being revived. 260 558
  • Xiya — Fellow companion in Lu Ban's circle. Feng Yu cooperates with Xiya on Weirdness investigations and is protective of her living arrangements. 456 457 469
  • Laika — Feng Yu recognizes Laika's true nature and reassures the creature when time disturbances occur. 296 519
  • Du Danping — Another Chosen of the Gods who immediately recognizes that Feng Yu is not human; she introduces herself to him simply as a Traveler. 890
