Background / History

The System awarded Naraku the weapon during the Nine-Tails incident, alongside spiritual pressure, Flash Step, and Kidō. Initially, it was only an Asauchi: a plain, durable katana without a name or accessible Shikai. Naraku understood that he needed to learn its name, but the weapon remained unresponsive for years. 2 3

Naraku called to the blade every day for eight years. When it finally responded, his consciousness entered a dark inner space containing a floating sphere. Touching the sphere caused it to burst and expand into a vast land. The System then disclosed that the Zanpakutō’s original consciousness had been destroyed during its remodeling; its powers had instead been integrated into Naraku’s soul. 16 17

Because its consciousness was gone, Naraku himself had to name the weapon. He chose Genmetsu, declaring its purpose to be “myriad transformations to deceive” and “annihilation to vanquish all foes.” The blade’s ability to accumulate other Zanpakutō powers became the foundation of Naraku’s growing arsenal. 18

Appearance

In its sealed condition, Genmetsu resembles an ordinary katana, though it is notably resilient in battle. Its appearance changes dramatically according to the release being used. 2 63 72

Abilities & Skills

Copying and Unlocking Zanpakutō Powers

Genmetsu was remodeled to permanently copy and unlock the abilities of other Zanpakutō. The System describes physical contact with another Zanpakutō as the weapon’s copying method, while also stating that the powers Naraku receives through check-ins are random. 17

Sakashima Yokoso

Activated with the command “Fall down, Sakashima,” this release emits a fragrance that reverses the victim’s sense of direction. Targets misjudge up, down, left, right, front, back, and the direction from which they are being cut. 17

Divine Spear

Divine Spear is a speed-focused release that extends and fires at roughly five times the speed of sound. 50
