Background / History
Helibel was a Vasto Lorde-class Hollow who lived with and protected her three subordinates—Sun Sun, Mira Rods, and Apache. When a Broken Face pursued the group, Helibel was already critically injured by a slash that continually drained her spiritual energy and resisted ordinary healing. Even so, she refused to abandon her companions and was prepared to sacrifice herself so they could escape 283 285 288.
Naraku intervened against their pursuer and tested the group’s character. After witnessing both Helibel’s willingness to die for her subordinates and their mutual loyalty, he spared them. He later offered to treat Helibel’s injury, and she accepted the chance despite her initial distrust of an Eradicator 285 286 288.
While accompanying Naraku through the Great Void Forest, Helibel served as both guide and combat escort. Her knowledge established that passages between the Void Circle and the living world emerge randomly, vanish on their own, and cannot be practically destroyed through simple patrols 292.
Helibel entered a pressure-filled cave to scout ahead for Naraku. She pushed herself to twenty meters despite her reopened wound and cracking bone armor; her resolve to survive for Sun Sun, Apache, and Mira Rods triggered an unprecedented transformation. She emerged from a cocoon as a Face-Breaker, with a human body, restored health, and greater power 297 298 299.
After Naraku left the Great Void Forest, Helibel accepted his assignment to remain in the Void Circle, rise within its hierarchy, and report intelligence concerning its concealed manipulation and Aizen’s abilities 312. She later became one of the Ten Blades and continued serving under Naraku’s command 356 362.
Appearance
Before her Face Break, Helibel possessed a massive shark-like Hollow body, a fish tail, bone armor, and a skeletal mask. Following her transformation, she took the form of a mature human woman while retaining unmistakable Hollow traits 293 299.
- Blonde hair, blue eyes, and tanned skin 299
- A white bone mask covering her lower face 299
- A Hollow hole located on her abdomen 299
- In Return Blade, her hair shortens into a bob, deep-blue markings appear on her cheeks, and her clothing changes into a short-skirted swimsuit-like outfit 306
- Wields a large Zanpakutō that becomes a shark-gill-patterned greatsword in Return Blade 299 306
Personality
Helibel is calm, observant, and intensely protective of those under her care. She endures severe injury rather than leave Sun Sun, Mira Rods, and Apache behind, and her desire to protect them is the catalyst for her Face Break 283 285 298.
She is initially wary of Naraku’s mercy, but once convinced of his sincerity, she repays his aid with steadfast loyalty. Her devotion does not make her passive: she willingly confronts Stark to protect Asido because Naraku had marked him for protection, despite the enmity between Hollows and Shinigami 286 301.
Helibel is proud of her strength and dislikes appearing ineffective before Naraku. This pride drives her to overextend herself in the cave and to pursue Asido relentlessly after failing to detect him immediately 293 297.
Abilities & Skills
Vasto Lorde Spiritual Pressure
Helibel’s spiritual pressure establishes her as an exceptionally powerful Hollow even before her Face Break.
- Annihilated all nearby Hollow-like creatures across a ten-mile radius merely by releasing her spiritual pressure 291
- Caused more distant creatures to flee upon sensing her presence 291
- Her aura was considered threatening even by Stark, the First Blade 301
- Her pressure can scatter hostile flames and overwhelm weaker opponents 294
Hardened Skin
Her Vasto Lorde body possesses extreme defensive durability.
- Asido’s Zanpakutō could not pierce her fish tail or body through ordinary strikes 293 294
- Her body allows her to smash through massive trees while pursuing an enemy at speed 293
- Her bone armor eventually cracked under the cave’s extraordinary pressure, showing that the defense has limits 297
Resonance Shift
Helibel uses Resonance Shift for rapid spatial movement.
- Can vanish and reappear behind opponents in combat 293 294
- Traverses space rather than moving only in a straight line, allowing her to bypass Asido’s DanKū barrier 294
- Grants her speed superior to Asido’s advanced Flash Step 293
Void Bullet
Helibel fires condensed spiritual-energy projectiles from her mouth.
- Fires with little preparation time 293
- Trades raw force for extreme speed, described as more than twenty times faster than a Void Flash 293
- Injured Asido even after he intercepted the projectile with his Zanpakutō 293
Face Break
Helibel independently underwent Face Break after enduring the cave’s pressure.
- Transformed from a shark-like Hollow into a humanoid form 299
- Restored the injury that had continually drained her spiritual energy 299
- Raised her power above her prior Vasto Lorde level 298 301
- Gave her the instinctive capacity to perform Return Blade 299
Return Blade — Empress Shark Queen
Helibel’s released form further enhances her combat capabilities.
- Activated while cooperating with Stark to restrain Naraku’s rampaging Hollow state 306
- Transforms her weapon into a massive shark-gill-patterned sword 306
- Alters her appearance with short hair and blue facial markings 306
- Allows water-based attacks including Scorching Sea Flow and Battle Spray 307 308
Scorching Sea Flow
A high-temperature steam attack released through Helibel’s Zanpakutō.
- Produces a shield-like plume of steam around the blade’s tip 307
- Can damage and burn its target on contact 307
- Is stated to be capable of melting Tōshirō’s ice 307
- Naraku’s abnormal healing allowed him to recover from it quickly 307
Battle Spray
A compressed water projectile used in Return Blade.
- Condenses water around Helibel’s Zanpakutō before firing it like a cannonball 308
- Was intercepted and split by Naraku’s Heaven-Lock Moon-Cutter 308
Relationships
- Naraku — Rescuer, commander, and beneficiary. Helibel accepts his treatment, protects those placed under his protection, and becomes his intelligence operative in the Void Circle 288 301 312.
- Sun Sun — Subordinate and close companion. Helibel’s determination to protect her is central to Helibel’s survival and transformation 285 288 298.
- Mira Rods — Subordinate and close companion. Mira Rods repeatedly attempts to defend Helibel and urges her to accept Naraku’s treatment 286 288.
- Apache — Subordinate and close companion. Helibel’s wish to protect Apache contributes to her resolve in the cave 288 298.
- Niru — Ally and fellow powerful Hollow. Helibel protects and reassures Niru, who recognizes Helibel after her Face Break 289 300.
- Asido — Former opponent placed under Naraku’s protection. Helibel fights him, then later blocks Stark from taking him because of Naraku’s order 293 301.
- Stark — Powerful Hollow rival and temporary ally. They cooperate to restrain Naraku during his loss of control, despite Helibel’s initial distrust 306 307.
- Nell — Ruler whose power Helibel immediately acknowledges during the Ten Blades’ assembly; she rebukes Grem Jo for disrespecting him 356.
