Background / History

Sasuke returns to the Uchiha compound on the night of the clan's extermination and finds his parents dying. Itachi forces him to witness the massacre through Mangekyō Sharingan genjutsu, claims to have killed the clan to test his abilities, and leaves Sasuke alive to cultivate hatred and eventually challenge him. The ordeal leaves Sasuke traumatized and fixated on surpassing and killing his brother. 12 13

Before departing Konoha, Itachi asks Hyuga Naraku to watch over Sasuke when necessary. Naraku accepts, though he makes clear that Sasuke must ultimately walk his own path. 14

Over the following years, Sasuke gradually accepts Naraku's support. Naraku gives him training pointers, brings him into a wider group of academy peers, and uses fire-control exercises—such as grilling with ninjutsu flames—to teach him chakra efficiency. After graduating, Sasuke personally requests more intensive training, determined to gain enough strength to kill Itachi. 47 48

During the Land of Waves mission, Sasuke shields Naruto from White's attacks and is severely injured, deepening the bond between the two rivals. 52 His pursuit of strength becomes more urgent after witnessing Naraku's power and after facing Orochimaru, whose attempt to place a curse mark on him is interrupted by Naraku. 56 72

Sasuke later leaves Konoha to seek Orochimaru's power after losing ground to Naruto.
