History

Founding-era legacy

Before the Hyūga clan relocated to Konoha, it lived in an isolated settlement in the Land of Fire and guarded the sealed passage to the Moon. After Konoha was founded, Hashirama Senju repeatedly persuaded the clan to move into the village, while the passage was concealed behind a barrier. 127

Nine-Tails disturbance and Kumogakure crisis

During the Nine-Tails rampage, Konoha's civilians gathered in a mountain shelter while the village endured the destruction outside. 1

Years later, Kumogakure's treaty delegation used the death of its envoy—who had attempted to abduct the Hyūga heir for the Byakugan—as grounds to demand that Konoha surrender the Hyūga clan head or face war. The Third Hokage's willingness to sacrifice the clan for peace created deep resentment within the Hyūga. 4 8

Internal unrest

Konoha's leadership secretly moved against the Uchiha clan after discovering its planned rebellion. Itachi Uchiha exterminated the clan under an agreement that spared Sasuke. 13 14

Shimura Danzō's crimes—including human experimentation and the theft of Sharingan—were later exposed. He died after attempting to escape, while Konoha publicly attributed his death to illness. 66 67 89

Konoha Crush

Sunagakure and Orochimaru's Sound ninja attacked during the Chūnin Exams. The invaders used genjutsu to incapacitate civilians and low-ranking shinobi, erected the Four Violet Flame Formation around the Third Hokage, and breached Konoha's wall with a three-headed serpent. 80

The Third Hokage died in the ensuing battle. Orochimaru retreated after losing his arms, and the invasion ended with the remaining Sunagakure forces killed or captured. 82 Tsunade subsequently became the Fifth Hokage. 89 90

Naraku's influence

After Kumogakure targeted Neji Hyūga and Rock Lee for the Byakugan, Naraku retaliated against Kumogakure. Konoha publicly justified the incident as retribution for the attack on the Hyūga and warned the shinobi world against coveting the clan's dōjutsu. 111 122

Naraku's later defeat of Akatsuki made Konoha the focus of international attention. Leaders from Sunagakure, Iwagakure, and Kirigakure traveled to the village to assess the situation and discuss the threat of Madara Uchiha. 178 179

Government and Defense

• Hokage administration — The Third Hokage led Konoha through the Uchiha crisis and the early Kumogakure dispute, but his later record was criticized for failures involving the Uchiha, Danzō, Sakumo Hatake, and Hizashi Hyūga. 82 89
• Tsunade's leadership — As Fifth Hokage, Tsunade organized Konoha's response to escalating international threats and became joint commander of the allied shinobi war effort. 90 181
