Background

Chu Qing is the third son of Chu Yunfei of the Chu Family. Before leaving home, he was viewed as the son least suited to either scholarship or martial arts, and his family arranged his marriage with Wu Qianhuan to secure his future. He fled that marriage and vanished for seven years, leaving his family to search for him and exposing Wu Qianhuan to gossip in Heavenly Dance City 13 21.

During his absence, Chu Qing’s circumstances changed drastically. He later attributes his transformation to repeated brushes with life and death and fortuitous encounters; he also gains memories of a previous life as an ordinary man with a wife and son, which he believes account for much of his maturity and judgment 255 415.

He returns to Heavenly Dance City while concealing his identity, first as a beggar and later as servants, porters, and other personas. He watches over his family from the shadows, infiltrates the Chu compound without alerting its steward, and exposes a false “Chu Qing” sent to exploit his father’s grief 3 14 21.

Appearance

When unmasked, Chu Qing is a tall man with sword-like eyebrows, starry eyes, fair skin, and a handsome but rugged bearing. His high cultivation preserves a notably youthful appearance 328 422 595.

  • Stands approximately 1.8 meters tall 595.
  • Frequently conceals his identity through beggar, servant, porter, scholar, and other disguises 3 14 21 156.
  • The Night Emperor persona is identified by black clothing and a white mask 90 177.
  • Uses Painted Skin to assume the rougher-looking identity of Han San 346.

Personality

Chu Qing is controlled and observant, preferring to assess a situation before revealing his strength or intentions. He routinely uses disguises, ambushes, misinformation, and deliberately limited displays of power to keep enemies uncertain of his identity and capabilities 14 136 284.

He is pragmatic and often ruthless toward enemies. He interrogates impostors through torture, leaves Xia Wanshuang behind after using her to probe for hidden threats, and uses fear or violence when he considers it necessary 47 73 360. His restraint is selective rather than absent: he protects civilians, distributes valuables taken from Yin Feng Stockade to its victims, and helps Fang Tianrui subdue Divine Blade Hall only after securing a promise to protect the common people 86 103.

Despite his guarded nature, Chu Qing repeatedly assumes responsibility for people placed under his protection. He saves Tie Chuqing, assists Wen Fusheng’s rescue from Heavenly Secrets Valley, watches over Wen Rou’s condition, and arranges aid and training for others rather than treating them as disposable followers 120 149 436.

Abilities & Skills

Internal Arts and Body Protection

Chu Qing possesses extraordinary internal energy, allowing him to sustain prolonged battles against opponents whose techniques continuously regenerate or consume massive power 229.

  • Bright Jade True Scripture — Produces ice-cold, jade-like true energy; grants resistance to mind-affecting demonic and Buddhist techniques 192 215.
  • Nine Yang Divine Skill — Initially clashes with the Bright Jade True Scripture before Chu Qing harmonizes the two through Tai Chi Swordplay 195.
  • Indestructible Golden Body — Creates a protective aura without fixed weak points after its upgrade; can withstand extremely rapid sword techniques 159.
  • Heavenly Limitless Form Divine Ability — A high-level cultivation art that develops through numbered levels and strengthens the characteristics of his other techniques 518 568.
  • Maha Infinite — Integrated into the Heavenly Limitless Form Divine Ability, producing a vast vortex connecting heaven and earth during cultivation 536.

Fist, Palm, and Claw Arts

Chu Qing uses unarmed techniques as readily as blades, often adapting them to the demands of a specific fight.

  • Heavenly Frost Fist — Freezes opponents’ meridians and is strong enough to destroy them while delivering a fatal blow 110 226.
  • Bone Melting Palm — Obtained from a Martial Arts Treasure Chest 86.
  • Dragon Claw Hand — A thirty-six-form close-quarters grappling art emphasizing ferocity and ruthless control 160.
  • Three Parts Divine Finger — Used to counter the Weapon Master’s Heavenly Kill Swordplay and defeat him 411.
  • Flame Blade — Condenses profound internal energy into flame along the hand, allowing slashing, piercing, chopping, or cutting attacks 290.

Sword Control and Ranged Combat

Chu Qing can manipulate weapons at range with exceptional precision.

  • Sword Control Technique — Directs flying swords and even redirects hidden weapons with finger movements 322 380.
  • Can use the technique to pursue fleeing enemies, kill multiple targets, and return a weapon to its owner after battle 380.
  • His later blade-and-sword control exceeds the Sword Control Technique when supported by Eight Desolations and Six Directions, I Am Supreme! 586.

Movement, Disguise, and Strange Arts

Chu Qing’s mobility and false identities are central to both his assassinations and investigations.

  • Flying Willow Catkin Green Smoke Technique — A lightness skill obtained from Ling Beichen’s chest; initially disappointing to Chu Qing but later used to practical effect 136.
  • Time-slowing strange art — Perceives the world as nearly motionless, allowing an assassin to kill within a crowd and escape before others react 162 177.
  • Art of Absolute Wisdom — The first step of the forbidden Black Heavenly Book; creates a master-slave bond through internal-energy exchange 259.
  • Heaven-Shaking Earth-Shattering Great Technique — Lets him access past-life memories and enter another person’s mental world to examine their memories 415 538.

Equipment and Items

  • Injury Concealment — Ling Beichen’s personal sword, delivered to Chu Qing by Guan Changying after he returns Ling Beichen’s ashes to the Great Constancy Sect 247.

  • Four Directions Vessel of Heaven and Earth — A Golden Goblet that can transform wine into medicine capable of generating internal energy once per month 365.
