History

Public image and hidden practices

The Mirror of Sin presents itself as a righteous assassin organization that punishes the wicked, fostering the widespread belief that “there are no good people before the Mirror of Sin.” 1 401 Its actual operations include fabricated accusations, politically motivated killings, the removal of dissenters, and the pursuit of former members. 1 130 401

Chu Qing joined the organization after its creed appealed to his sense of justice. His faith collapsed when he investigated an order to assassinate Zhou Changtai and found the supplied accusations entirely fabricated; after warning Zhou, Chu Qing was ambushed by five Mirror of Sin assassins. 1 The organization subsequently branded him the traitor Sword Ghost and continued pursuing him. 2 156

Conflict with Chu Qing

Mirror of Sin agents repeatedly targeted people associated with Chu Qing, including Chu Yunfei, Wen Rou, Liu Yulai, Tie Lingyun, Cao Qiupu, and Wenren Qianluo. 2 72 156 166 374 401 These campaigns steadily exposed the gap between the organization’s public creed and its conduct.

Chu Qing began systematically drawing out Mirror of Sin operatives by leveraging Sword Ghost’s notoriety, intending to locate and destroy its branches one by one. 152 In Setting Star City, he and Wen Rou destroyed a branch, killed its Branch Master and personnel, and recovered a Southern Ridge branch-distribution map and a partially burned assassin roster. 165 166

The destruction was claimed under the aliases Han San and Han Si, who became known in the martial world as the “Mirror Annihilation Duo.” 166

Main-branch campaigns

The Southern Region Main Branch was concealed inside a desolate mountain within the Mystic Mechanism Sect’s sphere of influence. 413 416 Its defenders suffered heavy casualties during an assault involving Chu Qing and a white-robed swordsman; Chu Qing later used the Ancient Chapter Zither to kill the remaining assassins he encountered. 417 Red Ghost, the branch’s leader, was killed by Chu Qing and Huangfu Yixiao, and the mountain base collapsed as Chu Qing’s party withdrew. 418 419

The branch yielded a Northern Ridge branch-distribution map, which Chu Qing divided among other sects for further eradication efforts. 417 419 By the time of the Underworld Assembly, the organization had suffered unprecedented losses in the Southern Region and had also been extensively purged in the Western Region. 577

Underworld Assembly

The Mirror of Sin convenes an annual Underworld Assembly at a changing location. 449 The assembly on the fifth of October was held at Wang Qing Cliff on Zhai Xia Mountain in the Eastern Region. 569

Key attendees were expected to include the Evil Execution List, the Book of Life and Death, Judge’s Brush, the Six Paths of Reincarnation Platform, and the organization’s leadership. 569 Chu Qing infiltrated the gathering by killing Wei Dongming and assuming his identity as Mad Demon Saber. 577 The event began with a poisoned breakfast that killed some attending assassins, then escalated into a battle when First Dao forces invaded Wang Qing Manor. 577 579

At the assembly, the masked Mirror Master was revealed as Luo Kongming. 579

Organization

Personnel and hierarchy

The Mirror of Sin separates its assassins into two broad groups:

• Organization-trained assassins — Usually active in branch offices; they assist missions, investigate targets, gather intelligence, process commissions, and may train other assassins. They are generally not listed on the Evil Execution List. 12
• Externally recruited assassins — Individuals who join for varied motives, including profit, coercion, excitement, righteousness, or infiltration. Each is assigned a liaison. 12
• Liaisons — Communicate with the organization for outside assassins, provide commissions, and may assist in planning assassinations. Liaisons can be organization-trained or independently trusted agents. 12
• Branch Masters — Oversee branch operations and coordinate with liaisons, though liaisons such as Bai Qi may deal with Branch Masters on equal footing rather than as subordinates. 165
• Evil Execution List — A roster of elite assassins whose members can individually rank among notable martial-world experts. 119
