Background / History
Gu Yu began on a Floating Island starting location with only one tree, yet rapidly overtook other nations during the opening monster competition. He converted island blocks into stairs, altering the monster-spawn judgment area, then placed a stone house in the new spawn zone to kill gathered monsters efficiently. Kyushu reached first place with 113 zombies, 16 skeletons, and six special monsters killed. 11
He maintained his momentum through resource management: Bone Meal let him rapidly grow potatoes and restore Satiety while continuing to farm monsters. He later gained a chest of multi-enchantment books and began pursuing iron, diamonds, and alloy equipment. 12 19
Gu Yu explored the Nether and Dusk through practical solutions rather than direct force alone, using snowballs against Blazes, blocks to trap Wither Skeletons, water against the Snow Golem Leader, and combat-mechanic analysis against the Lich. He became the first Player to clear Dusk after the Ice Queen was defeated when he dug an Aurora block, an outcome that confused Gu Yu as much as the audience. 38 49 69 70
By the Sudden Change period, he had turned the Floating Island into a fortified settlement supported by the Architect, villagers, the Great Wall, powerful weapons, and later Redstone Cannons. His growth repeatedly outpaced the Anti-Gu Yu Alliance and drew the attention of the Black Palace. 81 115 153
Appearance
Gu Yu is described as becoming notably more imposing as his equipment improves. The Alloy Set automatically adjusts to his size, while his Iai Swords are repeatedly noted for enhancing his appearance. 38 118
- Wore an Alloy Set during the Dusk campaign. 38 49
- Later equipped Dragon Frost Steel Armor, a top-tier defensive set. 201
- Commonly carries Iai Swords, including the sheathed White Sheath, Greatsword, and Yuzuki Blade series. 118 130 138
Personality
Gu Yu is highly practical, treating unfamiliar survival systems as problems to be tested rather than obstacles to be feared. He routinely converts ordinary materials and mechanics into decisive advantages, such as Bone Meal farming, snowballs against Blazes, water against the Snow Golem Leader, and Piglin resource collection. 12 38 43 69
He is confident in dangerous situations but not omniscient. Gu Yu was genuinely bewildered by the Ice Queen’s unexplained defeat, and he openly recognizes when an event exceeds his understanding. 70
His leadership toward allies is generally positive: he praises the Architect’s work, trades with villagers for needed materials, and protects the Floating Island. Conversely, he is harsh and calculating toward hostile captives, keeping the Black Mage restrained on a Wooden Boat and using the surrounding zombie threat to pressure him. 43 130 132 153
