Background / History

Kurapika left the Kurta Clan settlement at a young age after rapidly teaching himself outside-world languages and scripts and passing tests normally reserved for adults. His curiosity about the world and exceptional learning ability marked him as unusually talented even before he learned Nen. 83

He learns through a news report that the Phantom Troupe massacred the Kurta Clan for their Fiery Red Eyes. The report identifies 126 recovered bodies and describes victims being decapitated and having their eyes removed. Overcome by grief and rage, Kurapika's eyes repeatedly turn scarlet as he tries to confirm the truth. 80 81

A stranger directs him to Kevin Carpenberg, who knows about the survivors and Kurapika's mother, Rosana. Kurapika joins Kevin, Rosana, and Pairo, becoming one of the three remaining Kurta Clan members. Kevin later awakens Nen for the group and mentors Kurapika in its use. 81 110 115
