Fundamentals
Nen is the use of Aura, the life energy continuously produced by living bodies. Ordinary humans gradually leak Aura through small, closed Aura Nodes; Nen users learn to retain and control it, strengthening their bodies and extending their lifespans. 280
Aura Nodes can be opened through prolonged training and willpower, or by directly exposing a person to Nen. Kevin's Nen Awakening Potion provides a painless artificial awakening and causes the recipient's Aura to automatically cling to their body in a state resembling Ten. 280 344
Four Great Principles
| Principle | Documented use |
|---|---|
| Ten | Retains Aura around the body; awakened users can instinctively manifest it after consuming the Nen Awakening Potion. 344 |
| Zetsu | Restrains Aura to reduce presence. It can be incorporated into abilities, but leaves the user vulnerable if used carelessly. 281 571 |
| Ren | A crucial combat technique requiring concentration; Kevin uses it at the start of battle to perceive concealed Aura and counter In. 113 210 |
| Hatsu | The foundation for constructing an individual's personal Nen ability, shaped by the user's will and experience. 111 302 |
Nen Types
Water Divination, a method developed by Shingen-ryu, is widely used to identify a user's Nen type. 258
| Type | Documented characteristics and examples |
|---|---|
| Enhancement | Improves physical ability and gains substantial returns from physical training. Gon’s Rock is an Enhancement-based charged punch. 145 415 |
| Emission | Projects Aura at range; used for Nen Bullets, Nen Beasts, reconnaissance, and wide-area effects. 159 334 |
| Manipulation | Controls, adjusts, or alters objects and living beings through Aura. 302 |
| Materialization | Creates tangible Aura constructs, including weapons, lures, and specialized tools. 159 184 |
| Transmutation | Changes Aura into another property, such as wind or electricity. 224 353 |
| Specialization | An exceptional type that can appear connected to all other types and may be misidentified before its user fully recognizes it. 458 |
A person's type is not always fixed from the beginning. Training tendencies can cause a user with latent Specialization traits to settle into one of the other five types, while experienced teachers can identify a user's natural leanings and guide their development. 458
Ability Construction
Personal Nen abilities are shaped by a user's past experiences, will, thoughts, profession, and worldview. This produces abilities ranging from combat techniques to highly specialized tools for medicine, animal control, household work, reconnaissance, and information gathering. 281 302 485
- Strong abilities require matching restrictions, conditions, or costs. 302
- A user should leave room for future growth rather than make an ability overly narrow at creation. 302
- Nen abilities may be powerful in the right circumstances, but many are less practically useful than conventional technology or firearms. 485
- Extreme personalities can produce exceptionally destructive abilities with severe flaws, such as Feitan's self-injury-triggered Blazing Sun. 308 478
Advanced Techniques and Applications
En
En expands a user's Aura over an area to detect what enters its range. It requires talent and extended training to master; Kevin uses it to cover his companions within thick fog. 53
In
In conceals Aura-based constructs or effects. Detecting it requires focused Aura perception, making it difficult to maintain during intense combat. 210
Aura Constructs
Nen can create functional constructs, including barriers, ropes, weapons, invisible hands, animals, and game-like NPCs.
- Kevin creates layered hexagonal shields capable of stopping powerful Nen Bullet barrages. 370
- Nen users in Food Village combine Emission and Materialization constructs to lure and capture prey. 158 159
- Greed Island NPCs resemble Nen Beasts structured to follow fixed responses. 191
- A maid's Maid's Ritual creates invisible autonomous hands for housework and caregiving. 281
Nen Beasts
Nen Beasts are Aura-based entities with functions determined by their creators or the conditions that produced them.
- They may be used for combat, reconnaissance, transportation, protection, or utility. 159 314 359
- Maintaining a Nen Beast splits off part of its user's Aura and diminishes the user's available strength until the beast disappears or returns. 448
- Guardian Nen Beasts created through the Succession Ceremony protect their hosts, do not attack other participating princes, and can exhaust non-Nen-user hosts through Aura consumption. 475
Nonhuman Nen
All living things possess Aura. Humans differ because their memories, wills, and social experiences allow them to construct varied, personalized Nen abilities. 492
Demonic Beasts, Rare Beasts, and Dark Continent creatures can possess Nen-like powers formed from their bodily structures and life energy.
- Such abilities are usually fixed traits shared across a species rather than individually constructed powers. 492 541
- Humans can imitate and reconstruct some of these natural abilities through Nen. 492
- Extreme In and Zetsu can become instinctive survival traits in specialized creatures. 571
Role in Hunter Society
Nen is the practical “martial arts understanding” required of official Hunters. New Hunters who have not yet learned it are expected to receive training after earning their licenses. 99 300
- The Hunter Association has roughly six hundred Hunters, while the total number of Nen users worldwide is estimated at fewer than ten thousand, possibly fewer than five thousand. 145 485
- A Hunter License does not guarantee overwhelming combat strength; it primarily signifies professional competence in a chosen field. 145 278
- Most Nen knowledge is deliberately kept from the public. Professional Hunters and inherited traditions are the main routes through which people systematically learn to awaken and develop it. 258 485
