Yang Jian is politically perceptive and accustomed to acting as the Jade Emperor's trusted enforcer. He openly identifies himself as the one who handles work the Heavenly Court cannot publicly undertake, and he quickly commits to the dangerous order to destroy the Journey to the West party. 12

He is proud and competitive, refusing to concede defeat even after the Seven Fairies withstand his full power. His pride also makes him conceal his failure to lift Zhang Yifan's cleaver by claiming weak physical-body control. 11 24

Around Zhang Yifan, Yang Jian is notably filial and eager for approval. He worries over his appearance and conduct before their first meeting, volunteers to help with weeding, and enthusiastically brings rare ingredients home for Zhang Yifan to cook. 15 23

Arrival at the Heavenly Court

Yang Jian arrives from Meishan to determine the Jade Emperor's intentions toward the stalled Journey to the West pilgrimage. Before reaching the Jade Emperor, he is trapped by the Seven Fairies' formation; despite using his full power and the Nine Revolutions Mysterious Technique, he is defeated and transformed into a three-eyed puppy. 10 11

Destruction of the Journey to the West Party

The Jade Emperor entrusts Yang Jian with eliminating the Journey to the West team. Yang Jian accepts after being promised a future position as a Great Dao Sage and recruits the Meishan brothers for the operation. 12 19

At Lion Camel Ridge, he exposes the pilgrimage's tribulations as pre-arranged performances, kills Monkey Sun, suppresses the remaining party and demon kings with Quasi-Saint power, and collects the Green Mane Lion, Yellow Tusk Elephant, and Golden-Winged Great Peng as ingredients for Zhang Yifan. 20 21 23

Zhang Yifan's Courtyard

Yang Jian accompanies the Jade Emperor to meet Zhang Yifan and is immediately accepted as a grandson. He receives Enlightenment Tea and food containing Great Dao Law Fragments, later remaining at the courtyard to help oversee construction work by disguised Heavenly Court gods. 15 17 23

He discovers that Zhang Yifan's cleaver is a Great Dao Artifact after neither he nor the Jade Emperor can lift it. He later claims the broken handle of Zhang Yifan's hoe when it is revealed to be another Great Dao Artifact. 24 41

Assault on Western Spiritual Mountain

After Sect Master Tongtian is punished, Yang Jian organizes retaliation against Sage Zhunti. He recruits the Kirin Ancestor, Dragon Ancestor, and Nine Golden Crows, borrows Zhang Yifan's hoe, and directs the group toward Western Spiritual Mountain. 35

The attack destroys Spiritual Mountain, severs its spirit and earth veins, kills large numbers of Arhats and Bodhisattvas, and culminates in Sage Zhunti being beheaded by the hoe-wielding Kirin Ancestor. Yang Jian celebrates the Western Teachings being forced “back to square one.” 36 37
