Appearance

Tongtian commonly appears as a refined, handsome young man despite his status as an ancient Sage. 15

  • Sword-like eyebrows and starry eyes. 15
  • Striking, elegant features. 15
  • After receiving Heavenly Punishment, he is left blackened and smoking, with burned hair and severe injuries. 34

Personality

Tongtian is intensely proud of his identity, cultivation, and former standing as the leader of the Interception Teachings. He is initially humiliated by the Jade Emperor’s fabricated family hierarchy, particularly being forced to call Zhang Yifan “Grandpa,” but ultimately accepts it to retain access to Zhang Yifan’s opportunities. 15 16

His greatest lingering regret is the destruction of the Interception Teachings during the Investiture of the Gods Tribulation. Zhang Yifan’s blunt criticism forces him to confront his withdrawal after the catastrophe; learning that his disciples’ positions on the Investiture of the Gods List may secure their futures helps restore his resolve. 18 19

Tongtian is fiercely loyal to the disciples who remained with him. He is moved by Yunxiao’s long wait on Golden Ao Island and promises Yunxiao, Qiongxiao, Bixiao, and Zhao Gongming that he will not abandon them again. 26 38

He is also openly defiant toward authority when provoked. He intervenes in Hongjun’s punishment of the Jade Emperor, publicly denounces Hongjun’s conduct during the Investiture of the Gods Tribulation, and attempts to strike Zhunti in Hongjun’s presence. 33 34

Abilities & Skills

Sage Cultivation

As a Heavenly Dao Sage, Tongtian possesses immense combat power and can contend directly with other Sages.

  • Fought the Grand Pure Sage in the chaos for a full month while tempering his recovered realm. 31
  • His restored Sage aura and cultivation are strong enough to alarm the Primordial Lord of Heaven. 31
  • His power is temporarily nullified within Zhang Yifan’s courtyard, including his connection to the Heavenly Dao. 15
  • Heavenly Punishment later reduces him to the early Sage stage and gravely damages his primordial spirit. 34

Immortal Slaying Sword Formation

Tongtian commands the Immortal Slaying Four Swords and the Immortal Slaying Sword Formation.

  • Deploys the formation around the Heavenly Court to block the Grand Pure Sage’s attack and protect the court. 30
  • The formation’s sword intent is powerful enough that even a half-step Sage caught within it would likely be annihilated. 32
  • Uses the formation while battling the Grand Pure Sage in the chaos. 31 32
  • Hongjun later confiscates the Immortal Slaying Four Swords as part of Tongtian’s punishment. 34

Great Dao Insight

Tongtian gains exceptional enlightenment through Zhang Yifan’s hospitality.

  • Enlightenment Tea clears his mind and is rare enough that even Saints covet it. 17
  • Zhang Yifan’s dishes contain Great Dao Law Fragments, allowing Tongtian to gain insight into Great Dao Laws rather than merely Heavenly Dao Laws. 17
  • Receives an entire sack of Enlightenment Tea from Zhang Yifan and later shares it with Yunxiao. 17 26

Equipment / Items

  • Immortal Slaying Four Swords — Tongtian’s signature swords, used to establish the Immortal Slaying Sword Formation; confiscated by Hongjun after Tongtian’s rebellion. 30 34
  • Immortal Slaying Sword Formation — A supreme sword formation used to defend the Heavenly Court and battle the Grand Pure Sage. 30 32
  • Primordial Sky Measuring Ruler — Borrowed from the Jade Emperor during Tongtian’s battle with the Grand Pure Sage. 31
  • Enlightenment Tea — Received in bulk from Zhang Yifan; Tongtian keeps and distributes it to his surviving disciples. 17 26

Relationships

  • Zhang Yifan — Tongtian’s nominal “Grandpa” under the Jade Emperor’s invented family arrangement. Tongtian initially resists the title but later uses it naturally and receives Enlightenment Tea, food, and guidance from him. 16 17 27
  • Jade Emperor — Nominal uncle under the same arrangement. The Jade Emperor constantly calls him “Little Tongtong,” “great nephew,” and “eldest nephew,” though Tongtian later defends the Heavenly Court against the Grand Pure Sage. 16 30 31
  • Yang Jian — Treated as Tongtian’s nominal elder brother within Zhang Yifan’s household. Yang Jian joins the Jade Emperor in teasing him, but later seeks revenge against Zhunti in Tongtian’s name. 16 35 39
  • Yunxiao — Devoted disciple who waited for Tongtian on Golden Ao Island for over 100,000 years. Their reunion prompts Tongtian to reflect on his past failures and make amends. 26
  • Zhao Gongming, Qiongxiao, and Bixiao — Remaining loyal disciples who gather on Golden Ao Island and accompany Tongtian to meet Zhang Yifan. 38 39
  • Grand Pure Sage — Tongtian’s elder brother. They clash over the Jade Emperor’s killing of Taishang Laojun’s clone, then fight in the chaos for a month. 30 31
  • Dao Ancestor Hongjun — Tongtian’s teacher and adversary. Tongtian accuses Hongjun of manipulating the Investiture of the Gods Tribulation against the Interception Teachings; Hongjun punishes him with Heavenly Punishment and confiscates his swords. 33 34
  • Sage Zhunti — Enemy associated with the Western Teachings. Tongtian condemns Zhunti for taking former Interception Teachings disciples and vows to kill him. 34

Story Role / Major Arcs

Discovery of Zhang Yifan’s Courtyard

Tongtian secretly follows the Jade Emperor and Yang Jian to Zhang Yifan’s farmhouse after noticing that the apparently ordinary courtyard cannot be detected or calculated through divine means. Upon entering, he is horrified to find his cultivation, strength, divine sense, and connection to the Heavenly Dao entirely suppressed. 15

The Jade Emperor introduces him to Zhang Yifan as “Pan Santong,” a supposed great-grandson. After being pressured by the Jade Emperor and Yang Jian, Tongtian reluctantly calls Zhang Yifan “Grandpa” in exchange for continued access to the courtyard. 15 16

Recovery of His State of Mind

Tongtian receives Enlightenment Tea and food containing Great Dao Law Fragments, gaining cultivation insight and a sack of tea from Zhang Yifan. 17

When Zhang Yifan calls him the “biggest waste” of the Primordial Era, Tongtian is devastated but listens to Zhang Yifan’s argument that the Investiture of the Gods List may have preserved his disciples’ futures. This resolves Tongtian’s regret and restores his mid-stage Saint cultivation. 18 19

Return to Golden Ao Island

Tongtian returns to the deserted Golden Ao Island and reunites with Yunxiao, who has waited there for him for over 100,000 years. He gives her Enlightenment Tea and arranges for Yunxiao, Zhao Gongming, Qiongxiao, and Bixiao to gather so he can bring them to meet his “Grandpa.” 26 27

Defense of the Heavenly Court

After the Jade Emperor kills Taishang Laojun, the Grand Pure Sage attacks the Heavenly Court. Tongtian arrives with the Immortal Slaying Sword Formation, protects the court, and accepts the Jade Emperor’s public designation of him as an “eldest nephew.” 30

Tongtian battles the Grand Pure Sage in the chaos, borrowing the Primordial Sky Measuring Ruler. During the battle, he reveals that another Sage exists outside the Heavenly Dao Saints, prompting the Grand Pure Sage to reconsider the conflict. 31

Defiance of Hongjun

When Hongjun publicly punishes the Jade Emperor, Tongtian seizes the God-Beating Whip and demands that Hongjun stop. After Hongjun dismisses him, Tongtian denounces him as unworthy of being Dao Ancestor and accuses him of engineering the Investiture of the Gods Tribulation against the Interception Teachings. 33 34

Hongjun suppresses Tongtian, confiscates the Immortal Slaying Four Swords, strikes him with Heavenly Punishment, reduces his cultivation, and orders him to meditate on Golden Ao Island for one thousand years. 34

Reunion with the Interception Teachings Disciples

Despite his punishment, Tongtian reunites with his remaining disciples on Golden Ao Island. He promises never to abandon them again and brings them to Zhang Yifan’s courtyard, where they are accepted as Zhang Yifan’s nominal great-grandchildren. 38 39
