Background / History

Xuan Yin was an Innate Human who shared in Human Dao Merit and Destiny through his participation in matters benefiting the Human Race. After receiving the Tai Xiao Primordial Origin from Sect Master Tongtian, he became Tongtian's disciple and established a Cave Abode at the foot of Upper Clarity Peak to remain close to the Sage's teachings 2 3.

He is a transmigrant whose initial understanding of the Primordial World came from legends. Although Nuwa created him with a Heavenly Immortal body, he initially lacked cultivation methods and could not condense Magical Power. Tongtian accepted him among the Intercepting Sect's nine original Direct Disciples after recognizing his Merit and Destiny 1 2. His later rise is explicitly contrasted with Nuwa and Taishang Laojun's failure to take him as a disciple before Tongtian recognized his potential 378.

Rather than seize every available opportunity, Xuan Yin initially prioritized Tongtian's sermon. The teachings rapidly refined his Heavenly Immortal Dao Fruit and granted him several Divine Ability Methods 3. He also cultivated ties with senior disciples including Duobao Daoist, Jin Ling, Zhao Gongming, Yunxiao, Wu Dang, Gui Ling, Qiongxiao, and Bixiao, relying on their greater experience to answer his doubts 4.

His pursuit of the Path of the Earth Immortal began with Kirin Cliff, the transformed body of First Kirin. Xuan Yin initially refused First Kirin's offer because the associated karmic debt was too great, but later signed a Heavenly Dao Divine Contract, obtained Kirin Cliff, and received permission from Tongtian to cultivate both the Heavenly Immortal and Earth Immortal paths 6 8. With Zhen Yuanzi's Ginseng Fruit and the Earthly Origin Dao Fruit's power, he established the Tai Xiao Grotto-Heaven, which developed the aura of a Lesser Thousand World 9.

While drawn into the Journey to the West world, Xuan Yin took the identity Gu Yue Fang Yuan and audited Patriarch Bodhi's teachings. He observed Sun Wukong's early path, aided Wu Zhiqi, sought to free Sun Wukong from his destined course, and ultimately used his True Immortal tribulation to turn illusory beings and events into reality 13 15 28.

His entry into that world followed an attempt to eavesdrop on Taishang Laojun's preaching. Laojun transformed him into a Six-Eared Macaque and sent him to Flower-Fruit Mountain. Xuan Yin subsequently allied with Wu Zhiqi, Sun Wukong, and Yuan Hong against the forces directing Sun Wukong's fate 12 18 22 25. The memories preserved through his True Immortal breakthrough also reached Zhen Yuanzi, allowing the latter to protect Hong Yun from his anticipated calamity 53.

Xuan Yin's internal world later developed around Yuanzhou Immortal Island and the Five-Needle Pine and received the name Spirit Realm. It advanced into a Middle Thousand World before the Nine Great Golden Crows and the Dragon Persons were assigned to maintain it, and eventually became a Great Thousand World after he refined the Cycle of the Dao authority 73 106 327.

After becoming an Earthly Dao Sage, Xuan Yin used that Dao Fruit to attain Primordial Grand Unity Golden Immortal. He continued guiding fellow disciples and planning further Dao proofs rather than treating Sagehood as the end of cultivation 378 387 389 390.

Xuan Yin is ambitious, opportunistic, and highly conscious of karmic risk. He seeks benefits aggressively—whether through divine contracts, alliances, cultivation opportunities, or taking blame—yet repeatedly avoids burdens he considers beyond his ability to bear 6 8 87 270.

He is adaptable rather than doctrinaire. When Tongtian's Void Clarity Sword Dao did not suit his Seven-Orifice Exquisite Heart, Xuan Yin reworked it into methods better suited to his distractible, inventive nature 48. He also values practical backing, openly borrowing Tongtian's status and treasures when confronting stronger opponents 112 226.

His approach to cultivation develops into an explicit philosophy of “borrowing strength”: supplementing one's foundation through the concepts, origins, authority, and legacies of others. He acknowledges that his own rise depended on figures including Ancestor Dragon, Yuanfeng, First Kirin, Luo, Tongtian, and Cang Li Shi, and encourages Zhao Gongming to seek support from broader Dao systems rather than a single inherited connection 387.

Despite his willingness to scheme, Xuan Yin sometimes preserves personal boundaries. He declines to seize Wu Zhiqi's origin because doing so would not help Sun Wukong and would undermine his tempered Dao heart. When refining the Heaven Burning Treasure Mirror, he uses the remains of the already-dead Little Golden Crows rather than sacrificing living dragons or divine beasts 18 249.

Dora B Meng's independent intelligence leads to scrutiny from Tongtian and Duobao, while Xuan Yin begins encouraging Tongtian to contest opportunities associated with Mount Kunlun and Duobao's future Buddhist role 93. He subsequently defeats Pan Wang's attempt to sabotage his advancement and completes his first Immortal Dao Grand Unity breakthrough 112 113.

Second Generation Luohu

By planting Essence Blood in temporal nodes and changing bloodline identities, Xuan Yin creates an Asura incarnation named Luohu. The name's karmic weight places him on the path toward becoming the Second Generation Luohu 139 160.

He later discovers that Luohu deliberately concealed the historical connection through which his karma transferred. The Black Lotus, the Asura incarnation's inherited name, and Star Lord Luohu authority are parts of the same arrangement 186. Nuwa's incarnation later attains the Heavenly Emperor Dao Fruit while using Xuan Yin's identity and reforms the Heavenly Court. Xuan Yin gains Great Dao insights by reversing the karma imposed on him, while his imprint joins Fu Xi's and Nuwa's in obstructing Yaochi and Haotian from attaining the Fuxi Dao Fruit 270.

Investigations in the Return Ruins expose damage to the Primordial True Realm's Five Elements Cycle and connections between Pangu-derived worlds and Earthly Dao origin 322. Xuan Yin then bargains with Yuejian Clan for Cycle of the Dao authority in exchange for finding the Soul Washing Cauldron, transforming the Spirit Realm into a Great Thousand World 327.

After securing the cauldron, he arranges for Yunxiao to guide Shen Nong back while drawing the Western Sages into related opportunities. Shen Nong returns as second-generation Earth Count and receives the renamed Shen Nong Cauldron 339 340.

Conflict with Taiyuan Sage Mother

Xuan Yin's Asura incarnation captures cultivators attempting to intervene in a Golden Crow formation, escalating the dispute until Taiyuan Sage Mother confronts him. He insists that his actions represent himself rather than the Intercepting Sect, seeking to avoid prematurely exposing the sect to a confrontation involving multiple Sages 334 335.

His incarnations suppress Taiyuan's disciples and challenge her foundation. Xuan Yin's true body later enters the battle with the Ruins of Guixu Sword Embryo, Luotian Auspicious Clouds, and Saint Law Gourd, using Return Ruins and Ultimate End sword techniques to break the deadlock 336 344.

Heaven Creation Fire Spirit

Xuan Yin battles Taiyi's and Lingguang's ancient imprints for the Heaven Creation Fire Spirit. By transforming Prairie Fire into Chaos Divine Fire and combining it with Finality and karmic power, he overcomes Taiyi's Limitless characteristics and Lingguang's Nirvana transformation 358.

The victory grants sovereignty over divine flames, balances Water and Fire in his Law Dao Fruit, and brings the Wind, Water, and Fire Heaven Creation Spirits into resonance with his essence, energy, and spirit 358.

Earthly Dao Sage and Primordial Grand Unity

Upon detecting Qiankun Ancestor's revival, he warns the Western Sages that the Qiankun Cauldron could threaten Buddhist Dao prosperity. He prepares Tongtian's Six Souls Banner against Qiankun and Yin-Yang while intending to let Zhao Gongming wield it, respecting Hongjun's prohibition on Sages attacking those below the Sage realm 387.
