Power Progression

Stage / Realm / Level Chapter Notes
Pinnacle of mortal magical power 135 Established as having reached the mortal ceiling of magical power. Dumbledore nevertheless remains considerably stronger overall, demonstrating that magical reserves alone do not determine combat strength.
Restored physical life and magical power 143 145 Uses a sacrifice to Death to obtain temporary life, then the Philosopher’s Stone to restore his magic. Dumbledore explains that this resurrection carries a tremendous cost.
Initial Deep Space empowerment 536 Contact with Deep Space brings his magic into resonance with an alien power. Corruption begins within his soul, although he interprets the experience as access to superior knowledge.

Deep Space Vessel 556 Accepts an ancient being into himself, reshaping his Legendary Trait into Deep Space Vessel. Gains rapidly escalating power through consuming life force, while his body undergoes extensive mutation.

Background / History

Family and Orphanage

Tom was the son of Merope Gaunt and the Muggle Tom Riddle I. Merope used a Love Potion to secure his father’s affection, but he abandoned her after escaping its influence. She gave birth in London’s slums, named the child Tom Marvolo Riddle, and died shortly afterward. Voldemort eventually killed his father and paternal grandparents 561.

His maternal family included his grandfather Marvolo Gaunt and uncle Morfin Gaunt. Their impoverished home retained symbols of the family’s connection to Salazar Slytherin, despite the loss of its former wealth 106.

Raised at Wu’s Orphanage, Tom took possessions from other children and kept them as a private collection. Dumbledore confronted him, used a burning wardrobe to frighten him, and warned that being a wizard did not entitle him to hurt others. The encounter became a lasting source of fear and humiliation 2 204.

Hogwarts and Rise as Voldemort

At Hogwarts, Tom cultivated an accomplished, respectable persona while secretly pursuing Dark Magic. He became a source of pride for Slytherin and deceived the professors other than Dumbledore, but the admiration he gained did not resolve his isolation 226 561.

He abandoned his original name in his pursuit of power, becoming Voldemort. His subsequent ambitions centered on immortality and domination: he split his soul through Horcruxes and founded the Death Eaters to enforce his rule 90 559.

Dumbledore later suspected that Tom had hidden an important object at Hogwarts during a return visit in which a request of his was rejected. After that object disappeared, Voldemort acted hastily and sacrificed followers to delay Dumbledore 86.

Horcrux Discoveries and Early Defeats

Ian recovered Ravenclaw’s Diadem from the Room of Requirement and carried it into the Misty Illusion. There, Rowena Ravenclaw extracted its soul fragment, restrained and silenced it, and rejected Voldemort’s reliance on Horcruxes. Ian subsequently transformed the fragment into a slug, which his living Chocolate Frog, Spike, pursued 72 84.

Dumbledore separately recovered Hufflepuff’s Goblet from Gringotts and identified it as another Horcrux. His discussion with Ian established that Voldemort had split his soul seven times 105.

In the Forbidden Forest, Voldemort intended to possess a young wizard and investigate how many Horcruxes had been discovered. Ian killed his malformed host and pursued the fleeing soul, defeating its undead magic with Fiendfyre. Voldemort escaped by possessing Quirrell 119.

After obtaining temporary resurrection and replenishing his power through the Philosopher’s Stone, Voldemort fought Ian in an underground chamber. Ian’s Magic Inhibition Potion progressively suppressed his spellcasting; Transfiguration immobilized him, and a Magic-Modified Handgun killed his body. A Black Phoenix swallowed the escaping soul 143 145.

The Diary Fragment and Time Travel

The diary’s young Tom Riddle acted independently of his older counterpart. He manipulated Draco Malfoy into involving Ian against Voldemort, while threatening Draco against revealing his activities 191.

When another fragment possessed Harry Potter, Ian overwhelmed it with Fiendfyre and his Black Phoenix consumed it. The diary fragment exploited that confrontation to reach Nicolas Flamel’s Great Clock, possess Draco, and escape into the past. Ian followed 195.

In the earlier era, Riddle occupied Draco’s body in an eleven-year-old form, worked as a shop clerk, and sought opportunities to strengthen himself. He maintained that his knowledge extended only to age sixteen and openly despised the older Voldemort’s damaged judgment and noseless appearance 199 201.

Ian later revived Riddle through paradox as a “Paradox Angel,” leaving both him and Draco effectively in Ian’s service. Dumbledore subsequently chose to observe Riddle’s unusual circumstances rather than immediately capture him; a book belonging to Riddle supplied Ian with methods for converting spells and working with divine power 210 245.

Deep Space and Legendary Ascension

After Rowle returned bearing Ian’s soul mark, Voldemort ordered an investigation into the unknown wizard. He kept Rowle alive as a specimen but tortured him with the Cruciatus Curse to punish failure and intimidate the assembled Death Eaters 534 535.

Voldemort then used two abducted Muggles in a ritual seeking knowledge and power from Deep Space. The resulting contact corrupted his soul and ultimately enabled his breakthrough into the Legendary realm 535 536 537.

Confident in his new strength, he confronted Dumbledore and Grindelwald at a London night market. He redirected Grindelwald’s Fiendfyre through distorted space and prevented Dumbledore from intervening against the Death Eaters. Dumbledore instead attacked his mind, exploiting the vulnerabilities of his divided soul 545 547.

A young Tom incarnation appeared while the main body was occupied in the mental duel. It shared the Deep Space gift and threatened Grindelwald with spatial devouring. Dumbledore’s mental assault eventually struck a hidden crack left by Voldemort’s breakthrough 547 548 555.

Voldemort subsequently accepted an ancient entity’s offer to become its vessel. He consumed surrounding marine life through a spreading, corrupted sea, gaining power as his body mutated 556.

The False Ruins and Transformed Followers

Ian constructed an elaborate ruin specifically to trap Voldemort. Unaware of its origin, Voldemort endured hostile creatures, swarming insects, and mechanisms that extracted his blood and magic. One trial temporarily reduced him to an ordinary, powerless human in a desert 587 588 589.

Voldemort later used Deep Space power to transform Bellatrix and other followers. Although he imagined these powers as a route to godhood, he recognized that he had no Horcruxes remaining and feared risking his only life. He therefore sent Bellatrix ahead and used a clone to approach the supposedly weakened Grindelwald 592 596 597 600.

Final Defeat

At Hogwarts, Ian, Dumbledore, and Grindelwald fought Voldemort together. They severed his tentacles, countered his Deep Space attacks, and forced him into a corner as his body and magical reserves deteriorated 612.

Voldemort attempted to turn his defeat into a sacrifice that would open a passage to Deep Space. Ian purified the emerging tentacles, and the three opponents struck together, mortally breaking Voldemort without immediately killing him and thereby preventing the sacrifice from completing 612.

He admitted defeat and died shortly afterward. Ian confirmed that the passage was closed and that no Horcruxes or duplicates remained. Dumbledore closed Tom’s eyes and told him to rest in peace 612.

Appearance

  • Young Tom Riddle: Handsome, black-haired, and finely featured. He could present himself as an elegant, self-assured young gentleman 226 590.
  • Adult Voldemort: Pale, skeletal, and serpentine, with almost no nose beyond two narrow slits, scarlet eyes, and simple black robes 534.
  • Remnant soul: Appears as corrosive Black Mist, sometimes forming his noseless face or extending into tentacles 119.
  • Newly Legendary form: Develops faint dark-blue skin patterns and intricate markings around his altered pupils 537.
  • Deep Space Vessel: Possesses three scarlet eyes, black skin or scales, hooked claws, a torn, fang-filled mouth, and numerous tentacles. His severed appendages dissolve into corrosive black liquid 584 586 600 612.

Personality

Voldemort treats power as the answer to insecurity, mortality, and exclusion. Dumbledore describes his central weakness as an impoverished outlook: despite mastering Dark Magic, creating Horcruxes, and reaching Legend, he never develops beyond the conviction that greater power will solve everything 559.

His cruelty is deliberate as well as impulsive. He tortures followers publicly to establish obedience, preserves victims when they have research value, and allows others to die while he protects himself. His apparent elegance often serves as a mask for intimidation and sadistic enjoyment 534 535 545 600.

Arrogance repeatedly follows his increases in strength, but fear remains beneath it. He avoids conflict with Ian while weakened and later relies on scouts and clones because he no longer has Horcruxes to safeguard his survival 138 592 600.

His deepest insecurity is the fear of being ignored, forgotten, or exposed as unexceptional. Dumbledore’s mental assault reveals an abandoned child who wanted acknowledgment and acceptance but learned to substitute fear for affection 560 561.

The diary’s sixteen-year-old Riddle is more calculating and adaptable than the older Voldemort. He distinguishes himself from his future self, retains memories of childhood humiliation, and combines convincing manners with coercion and manipulation 191 197 201 226.

Abilities & Skills

Dark Magic and Dueling

Voldemort possesses extensive knowledge of curses, souls, and advanced Dark Magic. Even before his Legendary breakthrough, his restored form presents a serious challenge to Ian; the Magic Inhibition Potion is crucial to Ian’s victory in their underground duel 143 144.

  • Killing Curse: Uses Avada Kedavra, including within an ordeal recreating his childhood encounter with Dumbledore 204.
  • Cruciatus Curse: Tortures Rowle as punishment and a warning to other Death Eaters 534 535.
  • Fiendfyre: Conjures destructive black flames, including an enormous fire dragon 587.
  • Defensive magic: Uses shields, though their effectiveness collapses as the Magic Inhibition Potion suppresses his magic 143.
  • Severing and force attacks: Employs cutting curses, red-light blasts, and concentrated magical shock waves 587 588.

Horcruxes and Soul Survival

Voldemort divides his soul to preserve his existence beyond the destruction of an individual body. Dumbledore and Ian establish seven soul-splittings, while later fragments demonstrate possession and independent planning 105 191 195.

Vessel / Fragment Documented role and fate
Ravenclaw’s Diadem Recovered by Ian; Rowena extracts the fragment, which Ian transforms into a slug 72 84.
Hufflepuff’s Goblet Retrieved from Gringotts by Dumbledore and identified as a Horcrux 105.
Diary Contains the young Riddle fragment that manipulates Draco and escapes through the Great Clock 191 195.
Fragment within Harry Potter Possesses Harry; defeated by Ian and consumed by the Black Phoenix 195.
  • His remnant soul can possess hosts, including Quirrell and Harry 119 195.
  • Unlike ordinary souls, his state between life and death allows him to continue casting magic 119.
  • Splitting his soul leaves cracks that Dumbledore can exploit through mental magic 547.
  • By his final confrontation, every Horcrux and duplicate has been eliminated 612.

Black Mist and Undead Summoning

His soul carries a dense Dark Magic aura that corrodes living things on contact 119.

  • Shapes Black Mist into attacking tentacles 119.
  • Uses Night Soul Summoning of the Departed to unleash undead within the mist 119.
  • Ian’s Fiendfyre consumes both mist and undead, turning them into fuel rather than allowing them to overwhelm it 119 195.

Legendary Chaos Magic

Deep Space empowerment fundamentally changes the nature of his magic, allowing effects beyond conventional Dark Magic 537.

  • Reality distortion: Bends light and alters rock into writhing sludge before solidifying it again 537.
  • Spatial defense: Divides and redirects incoming Fiendfyre through a distorted barrier 545.
  • Corrupted curses: Adds mental corruption and cognitive interference to Pain Intensification 542.
  • Decay and Withering: Becomes nearly instantaneous, affects a wider area, and produces madness-inducing spores 542.
  • Soul Drain: Steals life force while weakening mental defenses and leaving chaotic whispers 542.
  • Incarnations: A young Tom avatar shares his Deep Space power and devours matter and space through a dark vortex. Grindelwald suspects that Voldemort’s Legendary Trait awakened Horcruxes into independent avatars 547 548.

Deep Space Vessel

Fusion with an ancient being turns Voldemort into a conduit for external power rather than merely a wizard wielding it 556 612.

  • Corrupts seawater and consumes the life force of creatures caught within it 556.
  • Regains expended magic through the backing of Deep Space entities 589.
  • Transforms followers’ flesh, bones, and souls, producing enhanced power and worshipful obedience 592 596 597.
  • Communicates through a crystal ball and rune circle to obtain information about Raven and Grindelwald 592.
  • Creates tentacles capable of tearing space and forms dark-red weapons and shields 612.
  • Remains vulnerable to combined Legendary attacks; his final injuries prevent his tentacles from regenerating 612.
