Background

Zhongli is a twice-transmigrated individual. He first reincarnated as Morax on Teyvat, where he ended the Demon God War, protected Liyue for millennia, and became its Geo Archon. Unlike the original course of events, he saved the Yakshas and Guizhong, while preemptively suppressing Oseil and the Evil Chi. 1 21 23

After retiring from his divine position, he unexpectedly arrived outside Heaven Dou City on the Douluo Continent. He chose to live as “Zhongli,” treating retirement in a new world as no different from retirement in Liyue. His Erosion stopped worsening after the transfer, though it was not fully removed until the Heavenly Screen rewarded him. 1 25

In Heaven Dou City, Zhongli cultivated the image of an idle, refined dandy: strolling through the city, walking his bird, drinking tea, listening to music, and visiting the Bright Moon Brothel. He formed a loose association with Fourth Prince Xue Beng, who recognized his intellect and hoped to recruit him. 1 5 21

The Heavenly Screen publicly exposed Zhongli as Morax. Its records showed his decision to end his era as ruler and “return power to the people,” taking the name Zhongli after protecting Liyue for thousands of years. 21

Appearance

Zhongli appears as a handsome young man whose bearing is frequently compared to that of a retired high-ranking official, despite initially looking “eighty years old.” 1

  • Long amber hair and deep amber eyes. 1
  • Calm, dignified demeanor; his gestures are described as carrying profound meaning. 21
  • Divine form: white robes, dragon horns, rune-covered hands, glowing amber eyes, and a diamond-shaped amber halo. 19
  • Divine Attire — Morax manifests amid golden light. 106

Personality

Zhongli is composed to an extraordinary degree. Even the revelation of Bibi Dong’s overwhelming power and the Heavenly Screen’s arrival fail to visibly disturb him; after thousands of years, ordinary emotions such as surprise and fear have faded greatly. 4

He values responsibility over authority. He regards power as a public trust and burden rather than a means of domination, which led him to abdicate as Geo Archon. 21 However, he is not uniformly detached: threats to Liyue can bring out the arrogant, violent, and uncompromising Morax who directly warns enemies to leave or die. 53

Despite his age and burdens, Zhongli has dry humor and an impractical relationship with money. He often pays with poems or songs, spends freely without bringing Mora, and asks even the Ruinous Dragon King whether he brought money. 5 32 34
