The battle didn't last long. Zero, the chief of CP0, was defeated and captured.

He was still somewhat useful. As the chief of CP0, he reported directly to the Gorosei and had access to many of the World Government's core secrets. He had even been in direct contact with the World Nobles.

The memories in his head could provide the Night Pirates with plenty of valuable intelligence. Once they had extracted everything, he would naturally be of no further use.

Things never went as expected. Seeing that the Night Pirates hadn't killed him, Zero was sure they had some hidden scheme in mind.

To stop the Night Pirates from carrying out their plan, Zero found a way to take his own life, despite being crippled, wearing Seastone handcuffs, and having Seastone bullets embedded in his flesh.

Things had taken Teach by surprise. He gazed silently at the corpse, then waved a hand and sucked it into Darkness Space.

He hadn't anticipated this. He never thought the chief of CP0 would kill himself. From the state of Zero's body, it was clear that he had completely destroyed it.

Zero had probably used Life Return to end his own life, so the Night Pirates wouldn't get any information.

He could have survived if he'd held out and refused to yield to the Night Pirates' interrogations. Through his Vivre Card, the World Government would surely have learned he was still alive and might have come to rescue him.

But he couldn't be certain he'd be able to hold out. People were complicated. He might have felt that way now, only to change his mind later and give in to the Night Pirates.

He couldn't accept that possibility, so he acted without hesitation.
