History

Founding and East Blue campaign

Teach left the Whitebeard Pirates before the Great Pirate Era and established the Night Pirates, initially sailing from East Blue toward West Blue. 317

When the crew first set sail in the Great Pirate Era, Teach recruited fifty carefully selected pirates rather than expanding indiscriminately. The recruits were expected to prove themselves through combat at sea. 136

The crew rapidly became notorious for attacking Marines instead of fleeing them. By this stage, they had destroyed three Marine warships and killed three Marine captains, becoming the dominant pirate crew in their sea area. 137 Their victory over more than 3,000 pirates and bounty hunters—while fielding only 100 members—and their subsequent feast at a Marine branch established them as East Blue overlords. 144

At Bal Port, the Night Pirates captured twenty Marine warships and put them on sale for 300 million Belly each. Teach also used the port to begin a major recruitment campaign. 150

Rise through the Four Seas

The Night Pirates expanded from one vessel into a three-ship fleet, including the Lucky Goddess and Wallace’s Steel Ship. 151 Their flag and reputation became so feared that Marines in East Blue reacted with immediate alarm upon recognizing their approach. 156

The crew’s invasion of the Kraken Kingdom became a global spectacle after Morgans broadcast footage of the operation. Teach and Gari faced 20,000 elite soldiers, while Teach’s Conqueror’s Haki incapacitated most of the defending force. 214 The operation’s objective was the Dark-Dark Fruit; after consuming it, Teach darkened the sky and later used its power to destroy the kingdom’s royal palace. 215 216

The Night Pirates then openly declared war on the combined fleet of three Marine Vice Admiral candidates. The declaration restricted the conflict to the two announced sides and drew spectators and observers from major New World powers. 241 During the ensuing battle, the crew’s executives overwhelmed a Marine force of 15,000 while List’s band performed “Starry Sky” on the battlefield. 245

Entry into the New World

After recruiting additional members, the Night Pirates numbered more than 1,600 before setting sail for Fish-Man Island. 343 Their recruitment drive there brought in more than 500 Fish-Men within three days, strengthening the crew’s naval capability and ties with Fish-Man Island. 346

At Blue Island, thousands of pirates gathered in hopes of joining Teach. The arriving force fielded sixteen ships, including three flagships, and was estimated at 30,000 pirates. 348 The crew subsequently moved into the Saggath Ross Sea, where Mostima and allied forces had prepared the groundwork for territorial conquest. 351 352

The Night Pirates publicly occupied Saint Louis Island and the Christie Kingdom, then began integrating both into a long-term territorial state. Their plans included a palace, railways, a pyramid coliseum, secret research facilities, and a cabinet staffed in part by Dark Council strategists. 361

Wars of expansion

The Night Pirates fought the Whitebeard Pirates for roughly half a year, gaining territory and reputation before temporarily halting the conflict. 371 They later launched a surprise, seven-army offensive against Whitebeard territory, using superior firepower and coordinated assaults to seize the initiative. 471 472

The crew regarded the Whitebeard Pirates as its principal enemy, an animosity shaped by Teach’s complete break from his former crew. 472 475 Following their later conflict, the Dark Emperor’s rise as a Sea Emperor was recognized as a defining event of the new pirate generation. 496

After the Flying Pirates’ defeat, the Night Pirates absorbed much of their territory and many of their remaining members. 534 559 By this period, they ruled more than 600 islands and were preparing to integrate the former Sky Kingdom into the Night Sea Domain. 535

Night Empire

The Night Pirates eventually established the Night Empire across a vast sea domain containing dozens of subordinate kingdoms. Its diplomatic and trade relationships extended to other kingdoms and the West Blue Alliance, while its overall power was described as surpassing even the Whitebeard Pirates. 660

Organization

Command structure

The Night Pirates’ main hierarchy was formalized through internal ranking battles held at the Combat Pyramid. Its principal ranks are the Seven Demon Kings, Thirteen Demon Generals, and Seventy-two Demon Pillars. 539

  • Seven Demon Kings — highest combat echelon, selected through internal competition. 539 540
  • Thirteen Demon Generals — senior officers ranked beneath the Demon Kings. 539
  • Seventy-two Demon Pillars — major cadre tier; even the weakest Pillar was estimated to be worth 400 million Belly. 545
  • Official members — combatants who have mastered Armament Haki. 544
  • Ordinary members — personnel who have not yet reached the official-member standard. 544
  • Affiliated pirate crews — independent crews retaining their own flags while accepting Night Pirate authority and obligations. 472 546

Each of the three ranked officer groups is assigned responsibility for protecting regions of the Night Sea Domain, including islands and Sky Islands. 546

Recruitment and training

The crew’s recruitment standards remained strict even during periods of rapid expansion. Early recruits were divided among elite, regular, and trainee members, with trainees required to train and perform miscellaneous duties before promotion. 150

  • Members receive gravity-enhanced training, contributing to the crew’s unusually rapid improvement rate. 541
  • Specialized facilities accelerate the awakening of Observation Haki. 544
  • Recruits who fail to master Haki within five years are expelled. 544
  • The Combat Pyramid’s lethal matches produce new fighters and provide the crew with a source of recruits. 371
  • Teach rewards outstanding personnel with Devil Fruits obtained through trade, auctions, the Dark Council, Doflamingo, and the crew’s own acquisitions. 471

Fleet and Technology

Ships

  • Lucky Goddess — early flagship of the Night Pirates and the original vessel of its Ship Fairy. 136 331
  • Steel Ship — Wallace’s ship, purchased for 100 million Belly and named after its commander. 151
  • Queen Anne’s Revenge — later flagship modified by Otto with concealed weapons and mechanical arms. The Lucky Goddess’ Ship Fairy was transferred into this vessel. 331
  • Sixteen-ship New World fleet — included three flagship vessels during the Blue Island gathering. 348
  • Island warship — a floating island platform capable of lifting coated ships by chain into an internal hollow docking space. 551

The crew’s later vessels were identified by black-and-purple hulls, dragon-head prows, and a pirate flag depicting three skulls, crossed bones, and a dark vortex. 472

Airships and mechanical assets

  • Airships — can carry up to 10,000 reinforcements, but require approximately half a month of repair and recharging after a round trip. 413
  • Mechanical creatures — used for surveillance, reconnaissance, tracking, and combat throughout the Night Sea Domain. 502
  • Weather weapon — used to create storms and manipulate the movements of intruders near hidden territory. 652
  • Research network — includes facilities for life-mechanical technology, artificial intelligence, super-soldier serum, artificial Devil Fruits, and ability potions. 361 579 636

Territory and Institutions

  • Night Sea Domain — the crew’s core sea domain, later incorporated into the Night Empire. 498 660
  • Saint Louis Island — planned and developed as the Night Pirates’ New World base. 330 361
  • Christie Kingdom — occupied and politically integrated through a joint cabinet controlled in part by Night Pirate-aligned Dark Council strategists. 361
  • Pagila Island — central territory containing the Combat Pyramid and the Dominator’s Hall. 371 487
  • Combat Pyramid — a massive arena and commercial complex that hosts ranked battles, death matches, gambling, and Devil Fruit prizes. 486 539
  • Thirty-six arenas — built across thirty-six islands to resolve conflicts, entertain visitors, and generate revenue. 371
  • Golden Island — the Night Pirates seized half of its interests after the Flying Pirates’ destruction, including gold-related commerce and real estate. 537
  • Sky Kingdom — former Flying Pirate territory targeted for annexation and integration into the Night Sea Domain. 527 535

Relationships

  • Marshall D. Teach — captain, ruler, and architect of the crew’s expansion; later Emperor of the Night Sea Domain. 492 498
  • Whitebeard Pirates — Teach’s former crew and the Night Pirates’ primary long-term enemy; their wars drove much of the Night Pirates’ New World expansion. 475 472
  • Big Mom Pirates — allied through a public marriage alliance intended to strengthen both powers’ influence. 535 547
  • Fish-Man Island — recruitment partner and increasingly close political ally; the Night Pirates offered Fish-Men protection, employment, and access to surface life. 346 498 561
  • Dark Council — linked through strategists, underground trade, intelligence, weapons exports, and shared political influence. 238 361
  • Doflamingo — cooperative ally whose North Blue expansion benefited from Night Pirate weapons, business, and influence. 238 382
  • Flying Pirates — rival imperial force whose Sky Kingdom and remnants were absorbed after their annihilation. 525 534
  • Marines and World Government — hostile powers repeatedly targeted by the crew; the World Government later launched a failed operation against the Night Pirates’ research institute. 241 653 658

Notable Characteristics

  • The crew’s strength is not limited to its highest-ranking officers; its large number of Haki users and mid-to-high-tier combatants is regarded as its greatest advantage over rival pirate forces. 541 545
  • The Night Pirates combine piracy with state-building, using railways, trade, arenas, research institutes, military academies, and territorial surveillance to consolidate control. 361 562
  • Their policy toward resisting pirate forces is often framed as submission or death, while compliant crews may retain their identity as affiliated crews. 429 472
  • Despite their fearsome reputation, the crew generally avoided causing trouble while merely resupplying in kingdoms during its earlier voyages. 174
