Power Progression

Background / History

Hongyun met Lu Chen, Zhen Yuanzi, and the Queen Mother of the West while crossing Chaos toward Purple Heaven Palace. Enthusiastic about Lu Chen's claimed inheritance from Ancestor Qiankun, he offered the party protection with the Nine-Nine Soul Scattering Gourd. He was injured when he tried to seize apparent Primordial Violet Qi, which proved to be bait sealed with the Three Clans' bloodline power. 10 11

At Purple Heaven Palace, Lu Chen pushed the injured Hongyun onto the seventh futon, securing him one of the seats connected to Dao Ancestor Hongjun. Hongjun later revealed that the Chaos violet qi was false, but stated that genuine Primordial Violet Qi was fated for Hongyun at a later time. 11

The false qi's lingering poison nearly killed Hongyun during the pursuit by Kunpeng, Minghe, Di Jun, and Taiyi. Lu Chen used Sky-Opening Merit, Three Lights Divine Water, and the Three Clans' cultivation methods to transform the poison into Five Elements origin; the process restored Hongyun and allowed him to touch the Quasi-Saint threshold. 12

Hongyun retained his futon despite Jieyin and Zhunti's repeated attempts to make him surrender it. At the third Purple Heaven Palace sermon, the violet qi he received was corrupted by a Demonic Seed. His eventual Saint ascension failed, damaging his foundation and severing his path to Sainthood. 14 26 33

Lu Chen later purified the ruined violet qi, restoring Hongyun to the mid-Quasi-Saint stage. A residual Demonic Seed nevertheless erupted again a century later; Lu Chen removed it with the Law of Time and the Chaos Brick, saving Hongyun's life but leaving his Dao foundation impaired. 42 62

To rebuild that foundation through human destiny, Hongyun agreed to send a wisp of his true spirit into reincarnation as Zhuanxu, the first of the Five Emperors. Zhuanxu was later captured near the Northern Darkness Sea, but Lu Chen and Zhen Yuanzi rescued Hongyun's soul. 65 67 71 72

Personality

Hongyun is open, enthusiastic, and notably talkative. During the Chaos journey, he readily accepted Lu Chen as a companion and explained his own experiences to him along the way. 10

He is also trusting and loyal. Although Lu Chen struck him unconscious and fled with him during the Quasi-Saint pursuit, Hongyun ultimately recognized that the act saved his life and vowed to repay Lu Chen's grace. 11 12

Despite losing his Saint opportunity, Hongyun remains willing to bear hardship for a greater cause. When told that reincarnating as Zhuanxu and severing humanity's connection to gods and demons could earn him lasting resentment, he accepted without hesitation. 67

Nine-Nine Soul Scattering Gourd

Hongyun's principal treasure releases crimson mist that can defend allies, impede pursuers, and form cutting attacks.
