Story Role / Major Arcs
Birth and Search for Immortality
The Immortal Stone of Flower Fruit Mountain gives birth to Sun Wukong after Lu Chen secretly implants knowledge and a seed of the Great Dao of Strength within it. He becomes leader of the monkey troop and is honored as the Handsome Monkey King. 96
After an old macaque dies, he leaves Flower Fruit Mountain on a raft to seek immortality. Lu Chen disrupts Guanyin's intended guidance, creates a false Slanting Moon Three Stars Cave, and accepts him as a disciple through the false identity of Patriarch Bodhi. 97
Dragon Palace and Underworld Defiance
Upon returning to Flower Fruit Mountain, Sun Wukong enters the East Sea Dragon Palace and obtains the Ruyi Jingu Bang, along with his crown, armor, and boots. 98
Dragged to the Underworld by soul-reaping envoys, he breaks free, erases his own name and those of the monkey clan from the Book of Life and Death, and destroys the Hall of Asura. 99
Great Sage Equal to Heaven
The Heavenly Court initially recruits him as Keeper of the Imperial Stable. After learning that the post is low-ranking, he refuses it; Lu Chen's intervention secures his enfeoffment as Great Sage Equal to Heaven instead. 100
Bored and angered by the Heavenly Court's disdain, he steals portions of the Flat Peaches, golden elixirs, and wine. He is eventually lured out by the Yin-Yang Conjoined Peach and placed in the Eight Trigrams Furnace. 101 102
The False Five Elements Mountain Imprisonment
After escaping the furnace and fighting through Tushita Palace, Sun Wukong wagers with Tathagata that he can escape the Buddha's palm. Tathagata wins through deception and attempts to suppress him beneath Five Elements Mountain. 103
Lu Chen replaces him at the crucial moment with a Chaos Monkey Hair Clone. While the Three Realms believe Sun Wukong is imprisoned, the real Sun Wukong trains for five hundred years in the Heaven of Strength inside the Chaos World Brick. 103 104
Journey to the West
Xuanzang removes the Buddhist seal and formally accepts Sun Wukong as his eldest disciple. Sun Wukong conceals his true power, acting weakened after his supposed imprisonment. 113
During the westward journey, he helps face demons and staged tribulations, including the Yellow Robe Monster, Golden Horn and Silver Horn, the Green Mane Lion, Red Boy, and the Green Bull Demon. 119 120 121 122 125
