Background / History

Jieyin first appears at Purple Heaven Palace, where he and Zhunti occupy the fifth and sixth futons ahead of Hongyun. After the sermon, he proposes travelling with Hongyun and Lu Chen through Chaos, but Lu Chen refuses and privately warns Hongyun not to surrender his seat to the pair. 11

Before the second sermon, Jieyin fights a rogue cultivator over a projection of the Twelve-Petal Golden Lotus. Lu Chen ambushes him with the Black Brick, allowing the rogue cultivator to take the treasure. 14 Lu Chen later strikes Jieyin and Zhunti again when they attempt to pressure Hongyun into relinquishing his futon. 14

Jieyin and Zhunti were secretly implanted with Luohu's Demonic Seeds after entering the outskirts of the Demon Abyss in their early years. The seeds amplify their dissatisfaction with the Xuanmen path and incline them toward the demonic path without directly controlling their minds. 17 Jieyin later expels roughly three-tenths of his seed, prompting Luohu to regard him as a potential threat and seek his death. 21

Seeking Primordial Violet Qi believed to be in the Demon Abyss, Jieyin forms an alliance with Zhunti, Minghe, and Kunpeng. Together, they forge and deploy an imitation Four Swords of Zhu Xian Formation, but Lu Chen destroys its core and forces their retreat. 22

Jieyin and Zhunti subsequently steal Houtu's primordial essence blood, intending to exchange it with Luohu for support and Violet Qi. Lu Chen intercepts them at Mount Sumeru and retrieves the blood, leaving them surrounded by both the Witch and Demon Clans. 25 26 At the third Purple Heaven Palace sermon, they attempt to seize Hongyun's futon and are punished by Hongjun. Their involvement with Luohu's Demonic Seed contaminates Hongyun's Violet Qi; Hongjun annihilates their bodies and souls, leaving only their true spirits to enter reincarnation. 26

Their reincarnated selves recover quickly and continue pursuing Lu Chen. Jieyin is tricked into accepting Lu Chen's Demon Abyss Token, which brands him with Luohu's mark and demonic energy. 30 Despite this setback, he and Zhunti eventually return to sainthood and establish Buddhism. 33 42

As a Buddhist Saint, Jieyin repeatedly clashes with Lu Chen over resources, the Witch-Demon conflict, and control of humanity's destiny. Lu Chen blackmails him and Zhunti into returning stolen replicas from Treasure Distribution Cliff and implanting a backdoor in the Great Formation of the Stars. 38 Jieyin later joins the other Saints in pursuing Hongyun's restored Violet Qi, but Lu Chen helps Hongyun absorb it before they can act. 42

During the Five Emperors era, Jieyin and Zhunti plan to place “Buddha Children” around the Human Emperors, fabricate divine miracles, and gradually absorb humanity's destiny into Buddhism. Lu Chen's countermeasures repeatedly frustrate these efforts. 67 68 Their later attempt to divide the Human Race's destiny with Minghe is publicly exposed at the Ullambana Festival, forcing them to retreat and seal Spirit Mountain. 68 69

Following the Investiture of the Gods, Jieyin and Zhunti expand the Western Teachings by converting former Interception Religion disciples and spreading Buddhist influence into the human world. Lu Chen and Zhen Yuanzi secretly extract many of these converts from Spirit Mountain. 89 90 Jieyin later participates in setting Golden Cicada's reincarnation in motion for the Journey to the West Calamity. 95

Personality

Jieyin consistently presents himself as sorrowful, courteous, and compassionate, frequently framing his ambitions as necessary sacrifices for the barren West. His appeals to Hongyun invoke the suffering of Western beings and the need to restore the region's spiritual veins. 16

Behind this demeanor, he is calculating and ambitious. He pursues treasures, Violet Qi, Houtu's essence blood, Hongyun's futon, and humanity's destiny, often in cooperation with Zhunti. 14 25 26 67 He is also pragmatic: when Lu Chen exposes his secrets and threatens Buddhism's reputation, Jieyin chooses compliance over open conflict. 38
