The living room was pitch black, punctuated by screams.
From Rebecca's panicked words, it was clear her boyfriend, Brett, had been dragged away while protecting her.
Little Martin shone a flashlight around.
Sophie was in the kitchen, muttering to the basement as if she were talking to thin air.
Li Dan rushed out and asked for an explanation. It turned out Sophie, the mother, wanted her two children to accept Diana's existence.
She had turned off all the lights, hoping Diana would come out to meet them.
Brett had never seen anything so dark, darker than a Black person.
He immediately pulled out his phone to call the police, but was dragged away by Diana.
No matter how strong Rebecca usually was, she was now crying uncontrollably.
"We have to save Brett, I got him into this."
Li Dan glanced at Art and the Bat Person. The two immediately understood and rushed into the basement to rescue him.
The Evil Spirit Wendigo was too large and not suited for such a confined space, plus it was too terrifying.
The Soul Severing Clown would work; to others, he just looked like a clown.
The Bat Person was covered up thoroughly, at most he'd be mistaken for a weirdo.
Rebecca hadn't asked, but she could tell these two strange individuals were the exorcist's helpers.
Li Dan turned the lights back on and fell into thought.
What method could he use to restrain Diana?
He had considered using luminous objects to pin Diana down, but she disappeared upon contact with light.
Li Dan suddenly thought of something.
A UV lamp, but where could he find such a thing late at night?
Before he could think further, the basement door was kicked open. The Bat Person was carrying Brett, Art hadn't come up.
He was likely being tortured in the basement in Brett's place.
Seeing the battered Brett, Rebecca thanked the Bat Person while sobbing and calling out her boyfriend's name.
Little Martin hid beside Li Dan, curiously observing the Bat Person in his long coat.
He seemed very interested in this strange man; from a child's perspective, the Bat Person was amazing for rescuing someone from a monster.
Li Dan was still thinking.
Diana, mental hospital, friends...
All the information seemed to point to one place.
If this were a domestic horror film, it would undoubtedly be Rebecca's mother suffering from schizophrenia and hallucinations, and she herself was harming her son and daughter.
But this was American Horror Story.
Li Dan had just personally experienced that suffocating feeling.
However, he felt he had to try. What if there was a connection?
"Rebecca, I won't hurt your mother, but I suspect the appearance of the evil spirit is related to her, so I plan to talk to her. Tell me anything you remember quickly."
Rebecca said, "Mom hasn't taken her medicine in a long time."
She only said this now because she felt taking medicine had nothing to do with evil spirits.
Li Dan understood. He stepped forward and blocked Sophie, who was about to enter the basement.
"Excuse me, Madam, is Diana your friend?"
Sophie hesitated, then nodded.
"Yes, Diana is my friend. She's just been mentally unwell. Please don't hurt her. I'll talk to her properly."
Li Dan's mouth twitched as he looked at the muttering old woman.
She was already obsessed.
Seeing this, Li Dan stopped wasting words and slapped Sophie hard across the face. The old woman, who had been muttering, was instantly stunned and sobered up.
She looked at Li Dan in shock, seemingly unable to understand why the young man who had been speaking so kindly would suddenly hit her.
Li Dan pointed at the three people in the living room.
"Madam Sophie, please look clearly at how your friend Diana is harming your daughter and son. By doing this, you are also harming your friend Diana."
"If you're sick, get treatment. If you get hit, stand at attention!"
"Diana is sick, very sick, just like you, Madam. As her friend, you should speak about her illness so it can be treated."
Li Dan simply went along with Sophie's words. Since you say Diana is mentally unwell and sick, then tell me about her illness and find the cause so she can be treated, right?
Sophie froze, then looked at Rebecca and Martin's crying, frightened eyes. As a mother, she finally wavered.
"You are a child of God, and if you are sick, you must be treated... Diana and I met in a psychiatric hospital. She's like me, but her problems are more serious. She also has a skin condition called photosensitivity..."
As Sophie spoke.
The room suddenly plunged into darkness, the entire block seemingly experiencing a power outage.
Li Dan: "?"
This is not a joke.
It's classic, isn't it? Something unexpected happens just as the truth is about to be revealed.
The commotion in the basement grew more frantic.
The next second, the door automatically opened.
A dark shadow instantly grabbed Sophie's leg and dragged her towards the basement. Li Dan reacted quickly, pouncing onto the shadow and holding it down tightly. The Evil Spirit struggled even harder.
She could have run, but she refused to abandon Sophie.
Li Dan was almost thrown off, but thankfully he held on tightly... Wait, this grip felt wrong.
Li Dan could clearly feel the softness in his palm, and he instinctively squeezed it.
Not bad, the feel was quite good.
The sudden silence was jarring.
Li Dan expected an angry reaction, but instead, he heard a series of demonic whispers that sent shivers down his spine and filled him with dread.
These whispers were mentally terrifying, especially in the dark.
Li Dan never believed horror movies could scare people to death until one day, he heard demonic whispers in his ear.
"Bang!"
A dull thud echoed, and the Evil Spirit's whispers vanished.
The Soul Severing Clown, now with only one leg, swung a blood-stained hammer and smashed it into Diana's head, seemingly dazing her.
Li Dan quickly called for the Bat Person to help hold Diana down and shook Sophie awake, urging her to reveal the truth.
He refused to believe they could be interrupted again.
As Sophie continued her story.
The truth of that year slowly unfolded before Li Dan.
Diana was mentally ill and suffered from photosensitivity. Before entering the psychiatric hospital, she was a cultist who worshipped an Evil God.
Calling it an Evil God, it was actually some malevolent entity that had appeared from nowhere.
Upon her death, she sacrificed her life to this entity.
This entity was actually the Evil Spirit, and after Diana's sacrifice, it possessed her body.
Sophie was Diana's friend at the time and visited her often, naturally becoming a target for the Evil Spirit.
First, it killed her husband, and then it prepared to attack her two children.
So, after the Evil Spirit possessed Diana's body, it was influenced by this vessel and could only appear in shadows. This is how the Evil Spirit that appears after the lights go out came to be.
After listening, Li Dan felt that this body was the key to restraining the Evil Spirit.
"Madam, have you taken your medicine?"
"Not yet."
"Where is the medicine?"
"I hid it. If I take medicine, Diana won't see me anymore, but I know where it is."
"Go get the medicine quickly. You take more, and give some to Diana too."
The old woman, dazed, ran off to find the medicine.
Li Dan then instructed Art to continue smashing with the bloody hammer. Looking at the blood on the hammer, he remembered it hadn't been there last time.
It was actually capable of inflicting stun damage on Diana.
"Art, where did the blood on your hammer come from?"
The Clown Art looked up at Li Dan with a confused expression.
Li Dan realized it was a pointless question.
"It's fine, go play now."
