Background
Maria comes from a wealthy but emotionally neglectful family. Her father, Dan, routinely blamed her for the bullying she endured and had even suggested plastic surgery when she came of age. Isolated at home and school, Maria accepted mistreatment rather than defend herself and kept her expectations for affection extremely low. 52 53
After transferring to Round Clam Public School, she became a target of Mark and his clique, who publicly humiliated her and later trapped her after school with a backpack filled with animal remains and waste. Li Dan intervened against the bullies, telling Maria that she was not at fault, though he insisted he was only enforcing the town’s rules. 52 53
That encounter prompted Maria’s first contact with Ailan, the confident presence in her mirror. Ailan offered to help Maria win Li Dan’s affection; after Jennifer intimidated Maria at school, Maria allowed Ailan to take control of their shared body. 53 60
Appearance
Maria is a beautiful young woman with delicate features, fair skin, and long black hair. Her appearance is repeatedly contrasted with Jennifer’s, while her timid bearing makes her seem softer and less confrontational. 52 61
- Long black hair, often worn loose over her shoulders 52
- Delicate facial features and a soft, quiet voice 52
- Initially avoids eye contact and carries herself timidly 73
- Later loses much of her former baby fat, developing a clearer jawline and a more openly affectionate expression 214
- Wore a light-blue princess dress during Round Clam Town’s Halloween outing 269
Personality
Maria is gentle, introverted, and deeply affected by years of emotional neglect. She initially struggles to speak up for herself, is easily embarrassed, and lacks confidence around both Li Dan and Jennifer. Her loneliness makes Li Dan’s defense of her especially meaningful and quickly develops into affection. 53 60 68
Despite her public shyness, Maria gradually becomes more assertive in private and when expressing affection toward Li Dan. She initiates their first kiss, continues witchcraft training despite finding it difficult, and becomes notably more confident after receiving encouragement from both Li Dan and Ailan. 82 113 167
Maria remains compassionate toward Ailan despite their differences. When Ailan becomes an independent person, Maria makes an active effort to welcome her into ordinary life and show her around Round Clam Town. 289
Abilities & Skills
Twin-Soul Existence
Maria was born with two independent souls in one body: herself and Ailan. Angelica confirms that this condition is innate rather than a later possession. 106
- Ailan could previously take control of Maria’s body, adopting a far more confident and aggressive demeanor. 60 61
- Maria and Ailan’s personalities are distinct enough that Li Dan immediately identified Ailan’s impersonation of Maria. 61
- Angelica identifies the pair as having potential to become “Twin Witches.” 123
- Ailan later gains an independent physical body through the combination of the Mirror Domain and a nightmare, ending her confinement to mirrors and allowing her to live separately from Maria. 289
Witchcraft Training
Maria studies witchcraft under Angelica alongside Ailan and other members of Li Dan’s household. 108 119
- She possesses witchcraft talent, though she considers the training difficult. 167
- Her motivation is primarily self-protection and the desire to remain close to Li Dan. 167
- No named spell or direct combat application has been documented.
Relationships
- Li Dan — Her romantic interest and later partner. His defense against Mark inspires her initial attachment; Maria confesses her feelings, initiates their first kiss, and continues growing closer to him. 53 68 82 215
- Ailan — Her innate second soul and former mirror counterpart. Ailan initially acts to fulfill Maria’s wish to be with Li Dan, but later becomes an independent individual; Maria still treats her as a familiar companion and tries to include her in daily life. 60 106 289
- Jennifer — Initially an intimidating romantic rival whose confidence causes Maria to retreat. Jennifer later stops targeting Maria after recognizing Ailan as her greater rival, allowing Maria to approach Li Dan more freely. 60 81
- Angelica — Her witchcraft instructor and the dominant authority in Li Dan’s household. Angelica recognizes Maria and Ailan’s unusual nature, supervises their training, and supports Maria’s reunion with Li Dan. 106 123 167
- Dan Brennan — Maria’s father. He is emotionally dismissive of her suffering, blames her for being bullied, and once proposed that she undergo plastic surgery. 52
- Mark — A school bully who humiliates and harasses Maria until Li Dan defeats him and his clique. 52 53
