Background / History

In the 1940s, Mary Shaw was Ravens Fair’s most celebrated ventriloquist. She treated the wooden dolls she made as her own children, particularly Billy, whom locals jokingly called her “eldest son.” During a performance at the Gothic Grand Theater, a boy accused her of moving her lips; the audience’s laughter humiliated her. Mary transformed the boy into a doll, was later killed by enraged townspeople, and was buried alongside 101 dolls. Her obsession with creating “perfect dolls” predated the insult and would likely have led to violence regardless. 58

After death, she became the source of a nursery-rhyme curse feared across North America. Ravens Fair’s priests and every church exorcist sent against her were killed with their tongues torn out, leading the Church to designate the town a forbidden zone. 55 56

Mary operated through dolls and lifelike human vessels. She used the perfect doll “Ella” to infiltrate the Eisen family, while Jimmy’s father had been hollowed out and supported by internal wooden mechanisms so that Mary could imitate his voice. 55 58

Li Dan entered Ravens Fair after drawing Mary’s attention. His attempt to test her with a mutant spider revealed that she could silently kill and convert living creatures into puppets. Her Mist trapped him in an illusionary space within her own grave, forcing him to use the second-phase Wendigo to break free. 55 57

Li Dan later uncovered her preserved corpse and puppet collection beneath the Gothic Grand Theater. Mary was contained only after Chucky’s Soul Transfer temporarily placed her consciousness inside his doll body, creating an opening for Li Dan’s Jack-ranked Ghost Card. Li Dan also sealed her hundred puppets, then burned the theater; however, Mary’s continuing existence in the card meant the curse itself was not fully extinguished. 59

Mary was vain, obsessive, and cruel even before becoming an Evil Spirit. Her identity was inseparable from ventriloquism and doll-making; public ridicule of her craft provoked murderous retaliation, but Li Dan’s observation of the past confirms that she had already intended to create perfect dolls from living people. 58

As an Evil Spirit, she is predatory and manipulative. She targets victims for transformation rather than simple death, calling Li Dan a candidate for her “most outstanding puppet” and taking a particular interest in Chucky’s doll body because it housed a human soul. 55 59

After containment, Mary follows Li Dan’s commands and acts as a guardian, though her violent instincts remain intact. Left unchecked, she and Annabelle will instinctively seek out and destroy nearby supernatural entities. 60 256
