Background

According to Galactic Patrol records related by Mers, Broly was born on Planet Vegeta. King Vegeta deemed the infant's potential dangerous and ordered him banished toward Planet Vampa in a one-person spacecraft. The account is presented as historical record rather than absolute certainty. 108

Beerus intercepted and swatted Broly's spacecraft off its Vampa course, inadvertently sending him toward Earth. Mers later identifies the man aboard the ship as Broly's biological father, Paragus, and explains that Beerus's intervention both spared Broly from Vampa and resulted in Paragus's death. 2 109

Broly's ship lands near Master Roshi's home when he is still an infant. Unable to speak or understand Roshi, he communicates his hunger readily; Roshi takes him in and eventually raises him as a foster son. 5 7

Growing up in a peaceful, well-fed environment allows Broly's power to develop naturally rather than through the hardship expected of a Saiyan exile. By age seventeen, he spends most of his time eating, sleeping, and avoiding Roshi's attempts to make him train. 7 20 26

Appearance

Broly is a tall, muscular Saiyan with a handsome, sharply defined face and an untamed appearance. His casual demeanor contrasts with the oppressive presence he gives off when he releases his power. 7 125 159

  • Thick black hair, worn loose or shoulder-length in his base state. 7 159
  • A Saiyan tail, which remains intact despite his inability to become a true Great Ape. 78 79
  • Usually wears simple, unadorned casual clothing. 125
  • His Simulated Great Ape Form enlarges his frame, swells his muscles, spikes his hair, and retains a humanoid body. 79 180
  • As a Super Saiyan, his hair becomes brilliant gold and he is surrounded by a dense golden aura. 175

Personality

Broly is usually relaxed, blunt, and noticeably food-oriented. During his youth, he has little interest in martial arts or formal training, preferring carefully arranged meals, sleep, and later games. 7 26 88

His calmness is not passivity. Broly is candid about his overwhelming strength, becomes bored by weak opponents, and actively seeks rivals capable of forcing him to fight seriously. 68 106 He also has a mischievous side, such as using Mers's communications equipment to frighten Master Roshi. 111

Although he rarely expresses affection directly, Broly is protective of those he considers his own. He defends Roshi from Raditz's insults, cares for Branchi, and reacts with extreme anger when his friends are killed or threatened. 76 89 126 129 His rage can be brutal, but his peaceful upbringing lets him retain clarity of mind even after becoming a Super Saiyan. 175

Abilities & Skills

Legendary Saiyan Physiology

Broly's strength rises continuously and naturally, even when he does not train. His peaceful life on Earth is stated to have drawn out his potential more thoroughly than a life of starvation and violence on Vampa would have. 7 20

  • Possesses power vastly beyond Earth’s martial artists; he defeats King Piccolo while using only a minute fraction of his strength. 20 23
  • His Battle Power continues increasing daily, sometimes beyond his own control. 44 68
  • Can endure extreme conditions from infancy, including exposure to space through an energy barrier. 1 2
  • His Scouter reading can appear deceptively low when he suppresses his energy. 67 78

Ki Manipulation

Broly can release tremendous destructive energy while also controlling it with unusual precision. 67 111

  • Forms protective energy barriers, including a platform that lets him and Launch rest safely high above the clouds. 2 73
  • Fires energy blasts and concentrated Flowing Light attacks. 2 144
  • Conceals his ki so completely that trained fighters struggle to sense any power from him. 67
  • Flies at extreme speed and can travel directly from Earth to King Kai's planet despite the spatial barrier. 86 103

Simulated Great Ape Form

Rather than becoming a true Great Ape under a full moon, Broly can imitate the form's power-amplifying principle while remaining humanoid. 79 180

  • Increases his Battle Power approximately tenfold. 79 180
  • Enlarges his body and intensifies his physical strength without sacrificing consciousness. 79 180
  • Can be combined with his Super Saiyan transformation. 180

Super Saiyan

Broly awakens as a Super Saiyan after Krillin is killed before his eyes. Unlike a berserker, he remains lucid and acts with deliberate intent. 175

  • Multiplies his base power by 50 according to his own later explanation. 180
  • Produces a golden aura and golden hair comparable in appearance to Goku's Super Saiyan form. 175 179
  • In this form, he effortlessly kills Dore, Salza, and Neiz of Cooler's Armored Squadron. 177
  • His anger is focused primarily on punishing Frieza and Cooler rather than indiscriminate destruction. 175 181

Combat Ability

Broly's fighting style initially relies on raw strength, speed, and overwhelming energy output. His spar with Mers reveals that he lacks the refined technique needed to hit elite opponents using superior movement skills. 111 112

  • Defeats Master Shen effortlessly. 44
  • Stops Great Ape Vegeta's palm strike with one hand and later removes Vegeta's tail with a ki attack. 143 144
  • Smashes Frieza into Namek's surface with a single blow. 164
  • Begins training under Master Roshi in the Starry Mind Technique, a movement art intended to be as unpredictable as the movement of stars. 116

Equipment / Items

  • Spherical Saiyan spacecraft — His childhood vessel, originally bound for Vampa before Beerus changed its course to Earth. 2 108
  • Scouter — Used to communicate with Nappa and learn about Saiyan Battle Power. 88
  • Cornucopia / Treasure Basin — A food-producing item that provides requested dishes; it ends much of Broly's former concern over obtaining meals. 88 103

Relationships

  • Master Roshi — Foster father and longtime caretaker. Roshi raises Broly from infancy and later attempts to train him; Broly protects him from Raditz's disrespect. 5 7 89
  • Launch — Wife and mother of Branchi. Their marriage is established during their moonlit newlywed outing, though Launch is later described as Branchi's primary caregiver. 73 76
  • Branchi — Broly's child. Broly openly shows affection and carries Branchi on his shoulders. 76 115
  • Son Goku — Friend, fellow Saiyan, and informal rival. Goku wants to surpass Broly, while Broly helps him pursue greater power through Saiyan recovery. 35 145
  • Krillin — Childhood companion from Roshi's circle. Krillin's death triggers Broly's Super Saiyan awakening. 126 175
  • Mers — Galactic Patrol Elite and Broly's superior sparring partner. Mers exposes Broly's shortcomings in technique, explains parts of his past, and pushes him toward conscious training. 108 109 111 112
  • Beerus — The God of Destruction who diverted Broly's spacecraft and killed Paragus. Broly considers him an eventual target for revenge. 109 126
  • Vegeta — A fellow Saiyan and recurring rival. Vegeta recognizes Broly as the Saiyan exiled toward Vampa but is repeatedly overwhelmed by his power. 79 143 144
  • Paragus — Broly's biological father, identified by Mers as the man who died after Beerus intercepted Broly's spacecraft. 109

Story Role / Major Arcs

King Piccolo and the World Martial Arts Tournament

Broly's first major battle on Earth is against King Piccolo, whom he overwhelms with only one ten-thousandth of his power. His feat shocks Roshi and later becomes known among Goku's friends. 20 23 28 31

He later defeats Master Shen with ease and becomes the target of Piccolo's revenge. When Piccolo challenges him after the tournament, Broly treats the fight as play and warns Launch that cheering might make him accidentally kill Piccolo. 44 64

Saiyan Revelations

Raditz's arrival confirms Broly's Saiyan heritage and reveals that he was intended to be sent to Vampa. Broly learns that he differs from ordinary Saiyans: he cannot become a Great Ape, but possesses a humanoid power-up with the same tenfold multiplier. 78 79

Broly refuses Raditz's invitation to conquer another planet and later humiliates him for insulting Master Roshi. 79 89

Search for Stronger Opponents

Bored by the lack of worthy opponents, Broly contacts Nappa, learns of Frieza, and seeks increasingly powerful fights. A Scouter attempting to measure him eventually explodes. 88

He travels to the Galactic Patrol headquarters to spar with Mers. Mers evades all of Broly's attacks with Ultra Instinct and Angel Power, forcing Broly to recognize that raw strength alone cannot overcome superior technique. 105 111 112

Conflict with Beerus and the Saiyans

Mers explains Broly's connection to Beerus and steers his desire for answers away from the Grand Minister. Broly accepts that Beerus will eventually awaken and resolves to wait for a future confrontation. 109

When Vegeta attacks Earth as a Great Ape, Broly casually blocks him, removes his tail, and permits him to flee only because Vegeta can lead him toward Frieza. 143 144

Namek and the Super Saiyan Awakening

Broly helps bring the Earth group to Namek, where his 300-billion base Battle Power shocks the Namekians and his allies. 146 151 153

After witnessing Krillin's death, Broly becomes a Super Saiyan while maintaining his reason. He leaves Frieza to Goku and confronts Cooler instead, rapidly eliminating Cooler's Armored Squadron and using Cooler as an outlet for his rage. 175 177 181
