Background / History

Son Goku first comes to Master Roshi's island after saving Sea Turtle. He is friendly toward Roshi's household and briefly greets Broly, who dismisses him once he realizes Goku is not after his food. Sea Turtle describes Goku as pure and kind. 8

He later moves into Master Roshi's home to learn martial arts. Despite Roshi's unusual conditions, Goku remains eager to train; he and Krillin formally become Roshi's students after bringing Launch to the island. 10 11 12

Following Krillin's murder after the 22nd World Martial Arts Tournament, Goku immediately pursues King Piccolo to avenge his friend. He reaches Korin Tower badly injured, only to learn that Broly has already killed King Piccolo and that the Dragon Balls have revived Krillin and the other innocent victims. 13 28 29

Determined to surpass Broly, Goku accepts Kami's invitation to train at the Lookout. Kami tasks him with defeating the reborn Piccolo at the next World Martial Arts Tournament, particularly because Broly has no interest in competing or training. 34 37

After three years of training, Goku wins the World Martial Arts Tournament by defeating Piccolo without killing him. He gives Piccolo a Senzu Bean afterward, restoring his enemy despite their conflict. 54 63
