| First Appearance | Chapter 1 |
Background / History
Yue Lingshan was raised on Mount Hua as the daughter of Yue Buqun and Ning Zhongze. For years, she had been the sect's Junior Disciple Sister and was delighted when Wang Jingyuan joined, believing that the position would finally pass to someone else. Her excitement quickly became infatuation at first sight, although Wang's conduct repeatedly undermined her idealized view of him. 5 6
She was already a capable Mount Hua disciple when Wang began sparring with her near Siguo Cliff. Yue understood the conventional sequence and principles of the Mount Hua Sword Technique, but Wang defeated her by exploiting her disgust and breaking her composure with an unconventional feint. 1
Appearance
Yue Lingshan is described as a pretty young woman of about sixteen or seventeen, with a small face and a long sword at her side. 1
- Usually carries a long sword as a Mount Hua disciple. 1
- Her expressions are notably easy to read, especially when angered or embarrassed by Wang Jingyuan. 1 10
- She is conscious of propriety and her sect's reputation, often reacting sharply to conduct she considers improper. 10 16
Personality
Yue Lingshan values orthodox sect rules, honorable conduct, and her father's reputation as the “Gentleman Sword.” Wang Jingyuan's use of lime powder, poisoned weapons, corpse-looting, brothel visits, and casual killing repeatedly horrify or anger her. 1 10 14
She is impulsive and prone to sulking, but she is not malicious. She worries about injured enemies and abandoned corpses, teaches Wang practical skills despite their frequent arguments, and grows concerned about the consequences of his schemes for her family and Mount Hua. 12 14 39
Though initially sheltered and politically inexperienced, she gradually becomes more aware of the pressures surrounding her father and sect. She questions Wang's unauthorized acceptance of Lin Pingzhi, recites Mount Hua's rules during the ceremony, and is relieved when Yue Buqun formally accepts Lin into the sect. 17 18 28
Abilities & Skills
Mount Hua Sword Technique
Yue Lingshan is trained in the orthodox Mount Hua Sword Technique and understands its standard sequence of connected forms.
- Easily parried Wang Jingyuan's beginner-level attacks before he resorted to an unsporting distraction. 1
- Explains that the traditional sequence allows the forms to connect smoothly and minimizes openings. 1
- Initially relied on her superior internal energy to contend with Wang, but his rapid progress eventually allowed him to disarm her in a single exchange. 20
Internal Energy and Lightness Skills
Her internal energy cultivation initially exceeds Wang Jingyuan's, enabling her to leap farther while using lightness skills. 10
- Knows Mount Hua lightness skills well enough to travel Mount Hua's difficult mountain paths. 10
- Her lightness-skill proficiency is lower than Wang's due to her comparatively playful approach to training. 10
Instruction and Sect Knowledge
Yue Lingshan can pass on basic Mount Hua teachings and formalities.
- Recites Mount Hua's sect rules when Wang accepts Lin Pingzhi on Yue Buqun's behalf. 17
