Background

Yue Buqun survived the Mount Hua Sect’s internal conflict between the Sword Qi and Form factions. Having seen Mount Hua at its height, he considers himself inferior to many of his former senior brothers; nevertheless, his relative lack of prominence allowed him to survive the conflict and eventually become sect leader. The duty of restoring the diminished sect weighs heavily on him 3.

He cultivates the Zixia Divine Skill at sunrise and rises before dawn each day under the pressure of leading Mount Hua’s revival 3. He maintains Mount Hua’s standing through his reputation as the “Gentleman Sword,” regularly aiding local people and protecting the weak, whether from conviction, strategy, or both 8 15.

When Wang Jingyuan descends from the sky, Yue initially believes him to be an immortal or banished celestial. After determining that Wang’s pulse is that of an ordinary person, Yue reframes him as someone with “immortal destiny” undergoing mortal trials. He recruits Wang into Mount Hua, accepts him as a nominal disciple, and conceals the extraordinary circumstances from the other disciples 4 5.

Yue Buqun is disciplined, cautious, and highly conscious of reputation. His public conduct is courteous and self-effacing, particularly when dealing with rivals such as Yu Canghai; he is willing to absorb insult personally rather than risk damaging Mount Hua’s standing 41.

Beneath his gentlemanly image, he is politically calculating.
