Background / History
Lin Pingzhi is the son of Lin Zhennan and the young master of the Fuwei Escort Agency. He had trained in his family's Bixie Swordplay since the age of five for fourteen years, but his confidence in the family art is shaken when Wang Jingyuan defeats him with repeated variations of the basic Mount Hua move “Green Pine Welcoming Guests.” 17
Wang offers Mount Hua membership as protection against the Qingcheng Sect's designs on the Fuwei Escort Agency and its sword manual. After witnessing the disparity in their skills, Lin Pingzhi eagerly accepts. His initial induction is informal: Wang destroys Lin's jade pendant, has him swear loyalty, and accepts his kowtows on Yue Buqun's behalf. 17
Lin Zhennan verifies that the cultivation method taught to his son is genuine, then publicly announces Lin's entry into Mount Hua. Wang later reveals that the arrangement also links Mount Hua's martial strength with the Fuwei Escort Agency's personnel, finances, and escort network. 18 19 Yue Buqun formally recognizes Lin Pingzhi as his disciple upon the party's arrival in Hengyang. 28
Personality
Lin Pingzhi is earnest, dutiful, and eager to improve. His defeat by Wang Jingyuan does not embitter him; instead, it convinces him that joining Mount Hua is worthwhile, and he commits firmly to the sect's rules. 17 His respect for his father remains strong even when Lin Zhennan asks him to reveal part of Mount Hua's newly taught internal-cultivation method. 18
He is highly deferential toward Wang Jingyuan, frequently following his senior brother's instructions despite discomfort or confusion. This obedience leads him to participate in humiliating Qingcheng disciples, promote an aphrodisiac prescription in a brothel, and repeat a misguided “Mount Hua spirit” performance before Yu Canghai. 22 32 41
Unlike Wang, Lin retains a strong aversion to killing. While he can fight bandits, he is troubled by the prospect of taking many lives; Wang deliberately orders him to wound opponents while taking the killings upon himself. 24 He also seeks acceptance among his Mount Hua peers, initially suffering ostracism for entering through an unusual arrangement rather than the normal disciple-selection process. 29 30
Abilities & Skills
Bixie Swordplay
Lin Pingzhi trained in the Fuwei Escort Agency's hereditary Bixie Swordplay for fourteen years, but his earlier training does not place him on Wang Jingyuan's level. 17
- His family technique and lightness skill are insufficient to stop Wang's controlled use of a single basic Mount Hua stance. 17
- He recognizes the extraordinary speed of Wang's Bixie Swordplay and is fascinated by seeing his family art used at its true potential. 22 28
- After learning the manual's secret from Lin Zhennan, he asks Wang how it can be practiced without castration. 26
- He refuses the conventional prerequisite because he has not yet continued his family line. 26
Mount Hua Training
Lin begins learning Mount Hua's foundational sword techniques and internal-energy method under Yue Lingshan after his induction. 17
- Yue Buqun later formally acknowledges him as a Mount Hua disciple. 28
- He is still considered weak enough that Wang leaves him behind with Yue Lingshan rather than bring him along on later business. 47
Swordsmanship and Field Experience
- Lin uses a long sword in his spar with Wang Jingyuan. 17
- He subdues Jia Renda after Wang disarms Yu Renyan. 21
- During the journey to Hengyang, he is ordered to practice against bandits by injuring rather than killing them. 24
- He joins Linghu Chong in confronting the Four Beasts of Qingcheng and uses Mount Hua's reputation to help end the conflict. 37
Relationships
- Lin Zhennan — Father and chief escort of the Fuwei Escort Agency. Lin Zhennan supports his son's Mount Hua entry, verifies the sect's internal method, and trades the family's Bixie Swordplay to secure his future. 17 18 19
- Wang Jingyuan — Senior brother and primary mentor. Wang accepts Lin on Yue Buqun's behalf, trains and directs him during their travels, and treats him as Mount Hua's link to the Fuwei Escort Agency. 17 23 24 37
- Yue Lingshan — Senior sister and initial instructor in Mount Hua's foundational arts. She travels with Lin and Wang from Fuzhou toward Hengyang. 17 23
- Yue Buqun — Sect leader who formally accepts Lin as a disciple after Wang's provisional induction. 28
- Linghu Chong — Fellow Mount Hua disciple. Lin accompanies him during the Tian Boguang incident and their encounter with the Four Beasts of Qingcheng. 31 37
- Mount Hua disciples — Initially treat Lin as an outsider because of his unconventional entry into the sect, but later comfort him after Wang's prank embarrasses him before Yu Canghai. 29 41
Story Role / Major Arcs
Journey from Fuzhou
After the Fuwei Escort Agency crisis is temporarily diverted toward Mount Hua, Lin leaves Fuzhou with Wang Jingyuan and Yue Lingshan to travel toward Hengyang. He follows Wang's lead in provoking Qingcheng disciples, then learns that Wang's actions are meant to shift Qingcheng's attention away from the escort agency. 23
On the road, Lin is repeatedly sent to fight bandits as training. He struggles with the moral cost of killing, while Wang claims the burden of killing for himself. 24
Hengyang and the Golden Basin Hand-Washing Ceremony
Lin arrives in Hengyang as a newly recognized Mount Hua disciple but remains isolated from many of the sect's established disciples. Wang advises him that defending Mount Hua's interests is the quickest route to belonging, though Lin is later tricked into making an awkward public display in front of Yu Canghai. 29 30 41
He assists Wang during the Tian Boguang affair by arranging a private room at Qunyu Garden and promoting the Fuwei Escort Agency's aphrodisiac prescription at Wang's instruction. 31 32 He also helps contain the dispute with the Four Beasts of Qingcheng by invoking Mount Hua's reputation. 37
Later Departure
After the ceremony, Wang judges Lin and Yue Lingshan too weak to accompany him on subsequent work. Lin instead leaves Hengyang with the main Mount Hua group. 47
