Background / History

Before the Heavenly Screen’s arrival, Yu Xiaogang was involved with the Imperial Dou Team’s prospective integration with Heaven Dou Royal Academy. He wanted to serve as the team leader and believed his tactical planning could defeat even the Martial Soul Hall team. 1

The Screen’s promise of Martial Soul Evolution and a superior cultivation system became, in his view, a personal opportunity: he wanted Luo San Pao to shed its “useless” reputation and hoped that spreading the new system would finally validate his standing as a Martial Soul Theory Master. 2

Yu Xiaogang reacted bitterly when early selections favored commoners over him. Lin Dazhu’s accidental Martial Soul Evolution particularly enraged him, though Lin’s immediate death restored his sense of balance. 2 3 As Soul Masters repeatedly died in the Doupo World, Xiaogang attempted to explain their losses as exceptional bad luck or encounters with hidden experts rather than accept the full disparity between the two worlds. 4 6

When Ning Rongrong disclosed the Douluo Continent’s existence to Qing Tan in exchange for protection, Xiaogang publicly condemned her for endangering future arrivals. Privately, he was angered that she had secured the same path of revealing her origin and gaining rewards that he intended to use himself. 7 He later asserted that, had he been born in the Doupo World, he could easily have become a Dou Grandmaster. 8

Learning that a Dou God could elevate members of the same bloodline renewed his hopes. He considered the potential benefits should his father, elder brother, or nephew Yu Tianheng attain that realm. 9

Heavenly Screen observer

Yu Xiaogang eagerly awaited selection through the first two batches, alternating between envy of those who obtained opportunities and denial of the danger demonstrated by the deaths of Qin Ming and Hu Yan Zhen. 2 6

After Ning Rongrong gained protection and a possible route to the Human Emperor Hall, he concluded that he too could betray the Douluo Continent for rewards if given the chance. 10

Third selection and arrival in the Doupo World

Yu Xiaogang was selected as the third candidate of the third batch and teleported to the Doupo World. He was elated, believing he would find an opportunity to evolve Luo San Pao and become powerful. 11

He arrived in a mountain range and used Luo San Pao to search for a river, intending to follow it toward a human settlement. This reflected his basic wilderness knowledge from traveling with Flender and Liu Erlong. 12

Composite Ape captivity

Before reaching water, Yu Xiaogang encountered a pack of Composite Apes. He attempted to drive them off with Luo San Pao’s two Soul Skills, but the attacks caused no meaningful physical harm or hypnosis; they only enraged the apes with their stench. 12 13

The pack captured him after he failed to escape. His ordeal was broadcast throughout the Douluo Continent, making him an object of widespread ridicule while devastating those close to him. 13

The Composite Apes kept him alive and brought him back to their cave, where he remained captive and suffered repeated humiliation. Witnessing Dugu Yan receive a chance to cultivate Dou Qi intensified his resentment over his own misfortune. 18 When his father, Yu Yuanzhen, was killed by Zi Yan, Xiaogang’s grief provoked the apes into tormenting him again. 28

Personality

Yu Xiaogang has an inflated belief in his own theoretical expertise and potential. He repeatedly treats himself as uniquely suited to understand or exploit the Doupo World, even when events directly contradict his assumptions. 1 2 8

He is intensely envious of others’ luck, particularly when weaker people obtain Martial Soul Evolution or protection that he believes should have been his. 3 10 18 His fear of the Doupo World’s power gap leads him to rationalize evidence that Soul Masters are outclassed rather than accept that conclusion. 4 6

Despite his vanity and resentment, he does not immediately abandon survival under extreme circumstances. He uses practical navigation knowledge, recognizes when his Soul Skills are inadequate, and attempts to flee rather than continue a hopeless fight. 12 13

Yu Xiaogang’s Martial Soul, Luo San Pao, is a plump purple-and-white creature with short limbs, broad ears, and apparent independent intelligence. It can physically manifest apart from Xiaogang and responds affectionately to him. 12
