Background / History

Initial investigation

Mao investigated the disappearance connected to Lu Bai's electric scooter and initially regarded Lu Bai as an ordinary citizen who had likely fallen victim to an Anomaly. When tests suggested an Anomaly had died, he found the conclusion impossible to accept. 272

During the investigation at Building Eight, Mao refused to let Li Hanbin—a non-Action Department member—open the suspected Anomaly site himself. He remained skeptical when Lu Bai claimed to have defeated the Old Man Tour Guide with newly learned Maoshan Daoism, treating the claim as either delusion or deliberate provocation. 273

Recognition of Lu Bai

When a fully formed Red-clothed Female Ghost appeared, Mao immediately ordered an evacuation, recognizing that his team could not meaningfully confront it. He and Li Hanbin then witnessed Lu Bai incapacitate the Anomaly with Lightning Law and a willow branch; Mao ultimately asked Lu Bai to end its suffering. 274 275

After recognizing residual matter from the earlier case, Mao accepted that Lu Bai had also dealt with the Old Man Tour Guide. He offered Lu Bai a position in the Action Department, beginning their formal cooperation. 276

Escorting the “Guardian God”

Mao became Lu Bai's regular field escort during investigations at Keshan University of Arts. He supplied Anomaly information, coordinated Action Department personnel, and deferred to Lu Bai's judgment when conventional methods proved inadequate. 277 279 280

He recognized the danger posed by Sequence 27, Abomination, urged Lu Bai to retreat when Palm Lightning proved ineffective, and fled the campus alongside Lu Bai and Observer Chen before military air support bombarded the target area. 283 284

During the Plague Doctor incident, Mao rapidly assembled a ritual altar at Lu Bai's instruction. After Lu Bai collapsed from eliminating the Sequence 06 Anomaly, Mao carried him into an armored vehicle, summoned reinforcements, and secured the area against opportunistic Deathmatch Participants. 287 288 290

Containment-center crisis

Minister Zhang formally ordered Colonel Mao Siyu to continue accompanying Lu Bai at the containment center. Mao remained at Lu Bai's side while the latter gathered Deathmatch Participants as “disciples,” though he was visibly bewildered by Lu Bai's prolonged speech to them. 292 293

When several of those participants became infected by the memetic Anomaly The Twisting, Mao identified the symptoms and explained the risk of contagion. He was prepared to execute the infected individuals to prevent further spread, but Lu Bai took the pistol and carried out the shooting himself. 295 297

Mao continued supporting Lu Bai through the containment-center outbreak, entering Lu Bai's study during an emergency, offering assistance against the scarecrow Anomaly, and providing information during Lu Bai's live broadcast. 301 304

Later, Mao led soldiers to Lu Bai's position during the Chainsaw Maniac incident. After witnessing Lu Bai defeat the Anomaly with a restored ability, he and the soldiers reacted with awe; Lu Bai offered to teach Mao his new ability, Restore. 315 316

Personality

Mao is professionally cautious and duty-oriented. Even before accepting Lu Bai's claims, he prioritized minimizing casualties, personally taking responsibility for dangerous first contact and ordering evacuations once a situation exceeded his team's capabilities. 273 274

His attitude toward Lu Bai shifts from open disbelief to practical trust and loyalty. He repeatedly follows Lu Bai's instructions under extreme pressure—relaying orders, preparing ritual materials, organizing security, and coordinating Action Department support—while still voicing concern when Lu Bai takes risks. 280 287 290 304

Mao is not unflappable. He becomes angry and frantic during the grenade attack, pessimistic about military bombardment destroying Abomination, and visibly disturbed by Lu Bai's eccentric conduct and increasingly inexplicable power. 284 286 293 302
