Background / History
Rhaegar was born sickly and expected to die before age ten. His mother died before he could know her, while King Viserys avoided him out of fear of another loss. Rhaenyra became his closest protector and source of familial affection during his childhood. 2 3 106
After striking Aegon, Rhaegar awakened the Explorer System. Its first relic expedition—inside Balerion's skull—gave him Blood of the Dragon and began the revival of his Valyrian bloodline. Determined to escape his frailty, he pursued lost relics and ancient Targaryen knowledge. 2 3
Viserys later replaced Rhaenyra with Rhaegar as heir to the Iron Throne. Rhaegar resisted the decision if it meant abandoning his sister, offering instead to defend and expand Targaryen power while insisting that Rhaenyra not be denied. He nevertheless accepted the role after Rhaenyra formally yielded her claim, then promised her three future wishes in recompense. 105 106 112
His position as heir expanded into practical authority: he introduced dragon-control policies, advocated reforms to the Dragonpit, led military campaigns, and secured loyalty among nobles in the Riverlands, Vale, Crownlands, and Reach. During a three-year withdrawal to Harrenhal, he restored the ruined castle and built a dragon pit while extending his political network beyond King's Landing. 120 154 176 249 250
Rhaegar was crowned king after Viserys abdicated. At his ascension, Glutton melted and recast the Iron Throne, while Rhaegar appointed relatives to new titles and crowned Rhaenyra Queen. 499
Appearance
Rhaegar is a silver-gold-haired Targaryen with deep, gloomy eyes, a high straight nose, smooth lips, and a tall, upright bearing. As he matured, his formerly frail body became lean but muscular. 120 249

- Often bears dark circles due to recurring dreams and nightmares. 120 249
- His Dragonborn transformations can produce black scales, bone horns, and slit-like vertical pupils. 563 699

Personality
Rhaegar is protective, ambitious, and unusually resolute from childhood. He places Rhaenyra's safety above his own succession, initially viewing the throne as a burden to be held rather than a prize to be desired. 105 106
As his power grows, he becomes more calculating and authoritarian. He can be compassionate toward slaves, commoners, and vulnerable Targaryen kin, but he is ruthless toward traitors, rebellious nobles, hostile Maesters, and political threats. 224 473 476 564
He is deeply conscious of bloodline, dragons, and dynastic continuity. Much of his policy is driven by the belief that the Targaryens need centralized control over dragonriding and a lasting means to prevent future internal conflict. 154 564
