Background / History
Rhaenyra became isolated after her mother’s death, Viserys’s marriage to her former friend Alicent, and Daemon’s removal from King’s Landing. As heir apparent, she feared being traded into a political marriage and described herself as a “lonely ghost” in the Red Keep; her younger brother Rhaegar became her primary confidant. 3
Her trust in Daemon was badly shaken after she secretly left the Red Keep with him and was nearly exposed through a brothel-related scheme. Rhaegar’s intelligence network and Illyric’s intervention brought her safely home and concealed her involvement. 44 45
When Viserys chose Rhaegar to replace her as heir, Rhaenyra initially found herself caught between her father’s decree and Rhaegar’s refusal to benefit at her expense. She ultimately surrendered the claim herself, accepting Rhaegar as heir because he had defended her. 105 In return, she secured Dragonstone as her lifelong fief and extracted Viserys’s promise never to interfere with her marriage. 106 At the formal succession ceremony, she announced that she would remain unmarried and help raise Rhaegar until he reached adulthood. 112
She retained a political role as Princess of Dragonstone, attending the Small Council and advising Rhaegar on the dangers of court intrigue. Her experience as heir made her particularly wary of people seeking to exploit the crown prince. 119 130
Appearance
Rhaenyra is a silver-haired Targaryen with violet eyes and a proud, regal bearing. She is frequently seen in black dragonriding attire and is noted for resembling her dragon in presence and manner. 167 549
- Long silver hair, often braided and coiled at the back of her head. 167
- Violet eyes. 549
- Typically favors black or red clothing, though she once wore one of Alicent’s green dresses. 130
- Rides in a black dragonriding suit when traveling or fighting on Syrax. 167 549
- Magical fruits given to her by Rhaegar slowed her aging and preserved her appearance. 292
Personality
Rhaenyra is proud, emotionally intense, and fiercely protective of those she considers hers. Her early loneliness and the loss of her claim left her sensitive to betrayal, political manipulation, and any threat to Rhaegar or her children. 3 130 575
Though she can be jealous and quick-tempered—especially over Rhaegar’s relationships and decisions affecting her children—she is politically capable and willing to compromise when doing so protects her family’s position. 227 571 573 She admires warrior-rulers such as Visenya and Nymeria, and repeatedly seeks an active role rather than remaining outside the realm’s conflicts. 227 296 549
