Background

Viserys is initially known as a tolerant, approachable ruler who greets his ministers warmly and is widely regarded as benevolent. His eldest son Rhaegar physically resembles him closely, sharing the composed and amiable impression associated with the King. 4

Before taming Vermithor, Viserys had once ridden Balerion, the Black Dread. He bonded with the dying dragon in his youth and made one final three-lap flight over King’s Landing before Balerion died in the Dragonpit half a year later. 297

The death of Queen Aemma in childbirth and Rhaegar’s early coma left Viserys without a clear male heir, allowing Daemon to gain ministerial support and develop ambitions toward the throne.
