Background / History

Aegon is King Viserys’s second son and Queen Alicent’s eldest child. Supporters publicly hailed him as “Prince Aegon,” creating early tension around the royal succession despite Rhaenyra’s position as heir and Rhaegar’s status as Viserys’s eldest son 6 112.

As a child, he repeatedly bullied Helaena and tried to take her space bracelet. Rhaegar forcibly disciplined him for twisting Helaena’s fingers; Aegon later admitted the bullying before Viserys 50 52.

By age seven, Aegon had successfully tamed the golden dragon Sunfyre, seeking his father’s approval and his mother’s praise 124. He used his dragonriding success to belittle Aemond after the latter failed to tame Tessarion, then openly challenged Rhaegar in the Dragonpit 125. When Glutton nearly devoured Sunfyre, however, Aegon confronted the consequences of his immaturity and vowed to change 127.

Personality

Aegon is arrogant, rebellious, and prone to idleness. He is dismissive of authority, mocks his siblings’ failures, and initially treats his duties in the Stepstones as an unwanted exile rather than an honor 123 125 217.

His recklessness is paired with insecurity. He desires recognition from Viserys and Alicent, yet reacts bitterly to comparisons with Rhaegar and resists expectations placed upon him 124 218. Rhaegar’s insistence that Aegon is neither disposable nor a disappointment briefly gives him the resolve to remain in the Stepstones 218.

Aegon’s attachment to Sunfyre is genuine and intense. He is devastated when Sheepstealer wounds the dragon and later becomes emotionally vulnerable after Sunfyre is severely injured in Meereen 322 563.

Marriage Disputes

Aegon repeatedly resists political marriage arrangements. After striking Cassandra Baratheon and fleeing the royal camp, he is removed as a prospective Baratheon groom in favor of Aemond 304. Alicent later attempts to arrange a match with Serena Hightower through deception involving a drug, though Aegon denies intending to touch Serena 409. He ultimately marries Serena 579.

Feud with Aemond

Aegon’s long history of taunting Aemond culminates in Aemond having him restrained and threatening permanent mutilation unless he apologizes 328. In the aftermath, Aegon returns to sword training, suggesting a temporary effort toward self-improvement 331.

Meereen and Sunfyre’s Injury
