Awakening and Development

The Mangekyo Sharingan is the Uchiha Clan’s highest conventional Sharingan evolution. Unlike the transition from One Tomoe to Three Tomoe, its awakening normally demands overwhelming emotional trauma; the resulting Yin Chakra surge can preserve and intensify the user’s negative emotional state. 2 106

A newly awakened Mangekyo provides a baseline increase that elevates an Uchiha’s physical ability and chakra to Kage level, before accounting for their individual ocular techniques or Susanoo. 9 122

Each Mangekyo user instinctively learns the nature and name of the dōjutsu awakened in each eye. These abilities vary drastically, making the Mangekyo’s evolution partly a matter of chance. 124

Abilities & Skills

Ocular Enhancement

A Mangekyo surpasses the Three-Tomoe Sharingan in perception, genjutsu, dynamic vision, and dōjutsu power. Its ocular power can also greatly elevate ordinary illusion techniques beyond their normal rank. 10 54

• A Mangekyo’s mental power can suppress weaker illusion users and detect traces of high-level genjutsu affecting another Mangekyo user. 54 67
• Mangekyo users exert overwhelming suppression against ordinary Sharingan wielders; this disparity allows a single user to dominate multiple Three-Tomoe Uchiha. 17 79
• The eyes enhance the user’s chakra, neural reflexes, Yin Release, and physical condition alongside their visual abilities. 9 122

Individual Mangekyo Dōjutsu

Each Mangekyo may awaken unique eye techniques. Known manifestations include:

• Kotoamatsukami — A supreme illusion technique that imposes a mental imprint and can completely alter a target’s thinking. It is capable of controlling ordinary Kage-level shinobi and typical Mangekyo users, though its effects can be detected by another attentive Mangekyo user. 2 9 67
• Amaterasu — Black flames released through the user’s gaze. The flames cannot be extinguished by Water Release and can kill ordinary jōnin on contact. 16
• Kamui — A space-time dōjutsu. A single eye may specialize in offensive spatial tearing or defensive intangibility; its power can develop enough to open a portal into the Kamui Dimension. 124 157
• Amatsumikaboshi — An Eternal Mangekyo dōjutsu that devours other Mangekyo Sharingan and incorporates their individual abilities. It cannot consume their ocular power and has a limited capacity per eye. 124

Susanoo

Susanoo is the Uchiha Clan’s ultimate chakra construct, ordinarily available to Mangekyo users with both eyes. 20 62

• It manifests progressively from skeletal ribs into an armored chakra giant. 20 62
• A fully developed Susanoo makes even an otherwise ordinary Mangekyo user a top-tier Kage-level combatant. 20
• Exceptional users may retain or develop Susanoo despite losing access to their Mangekyo, provided they possess immense Yin Chakra and dōjutsu power. 82 122
• Its size and development depend on the user’s ocular power, chakra, and bloodline. Shūichi’s enhanced Three-Tomoe Sharingan produced a forty-to-fifty-meter winged Susanoo, below a full Eternal Mangekyo’s usual scale but above a standard Mangekyo’s limit. 120

Limitations

• Ocular exhaustion — Excessive use causes vision loss, life-force depletion, nerve pain, and lowered immunity. Complete depletion can render an eye nonfunctional. 4 128
• Kotoamatsukami cooldown — Shisui’s original Kotoamatsukami required approximately ten years to recharge. Hashirama Cells can reduce this to days, but the technique remains limited by cooldown rather than vision loss alone. 4 10
• Psychological burden — Mangekyo awakening is linked to severe trauma and can leave the user with intensified negative emotions or instability. 15 106
• Dōjutsu power consumption — High-cost abilities can rapidly drain ocular power. Amatsumikaboshi, for example, can only be used roughly three times by an ordinary Mangekyo before exhausting the eye. 124
• Counterplay — Powerful targets with exceptional chakra or specialized eyes may resist certain Mangekyo techniques; Nagato’s Rinnegan is stated to be capable of resisting Kotoamatsukami. 28

Eternal Mangekyo Sharingan

The Eternal Mangekyo is formed through a compatible Sharingan transplant and avoids the standard rejection and degeneration associated with ordinary Mangekyo eyes. 9 66

• It raises an Uchiha from top-tier Kage level toward Super Kage level. 66 148
• Its greater ocular power supports stronger dōjutsu and a more complete Susanoo. 122 124
• It does not automatically grant the Rinnegan; even after extensive enhancement and Sage Mode, Shūichi’s attempted Rinnegan evolution failed due to lacking the required chakra “authorization.” 154
• Hashirama Cells can further reinforce Mangekyo durability and recovery, potentially making a standard Mangekyo nearly comparable to an Eternal Mangekyo in endurance. 148
