Background / History

Itachi is Uchiha Fugaku and Mikoto’s eldest son and Sasuke’s older brother. An Anbu operative caught between Konoha and his clan, he shares a close friendship and pro-Konoha outlook with Uchiha Shisui and Uchiha Shūichi 5 7 66 72. When Shisui is reported missing and a suicide note is found, Itachi investigates Root. He uncovers evidence that Danzō attacked Shisui, and the discovery awakens his Mangekyō Sharingan 5 15.

Itachi confronts Danzō to reclaim Shisui’s eye. Although Itachi takes it back, Danzō catches him with Kotoamatsukami. Shūichi subsequently captures Itachi, places him under his own control, and sends him to Orochimaru for experimentation. Itachi later appears as a Root operative under Danzō’s control 16 17 21 27.

While controlled, Itachi fights Fugaku and kills him, but does not massacre the Uchiha clan 71 72 170. Years later, Sasuke finds him and tries to free him rather than take revenge. Itachi’s hesitation grows during their fight, especially when Danzō orders him to kill Sasuke 170 171 172. He finally breaks free in time to shield Sasuke from Root’s attack. Wounded, he uses a Four Symbols Seal to kill himself and Danzō, entrusting Sasuke with his eyes and asking him to protect Konoha and the Uchiha 173.

Itachi is a young shinobi whose composed expression and Sharingan are his most conspicuous features 5 170.

Personality

Itachi is outwardly restrained and difficult to read. He investigates Shisui’s disappearance methodically and lures Danzō to a remote forest rather than exposing their confrontation to Konoha or the clan 5 7 16. Even after reclaiming Shisui’s eye, he considers using Kotoamatsukami to help Konoha and the Uchiha coexist instead of sacrificing it for revenge 17.

His apparent devotion to Danzō later conflicts with his feelings for Sasuke. He repeatedly hesitates while ordered to attack his brother, spares Sai after Sasuke’s plea, and ultimately sacrifices himself to save Sasuke 171 172 173.
