History

Tsunade was away from Konoha, traveling with Shizune and gambling in the Land of Fire. Her reputation as the “Big Fat Sheep” stemmed from persistent losses, but an unprecedented streak of eight wins made her fear that disaster was imminent rather than celebrate. Her belief linked good gambling luck with the deaths of Hashirama, Tobirama, Nawaki, and Dan Katō. 89

Orochimaru intercepted Tsunade and informed her that Hiruzen Sarutobi and Uchiha Fugaku had died. Although she had long distanced herself from Konoha, news of the village’s political crisis immediately concerned her; Orochimaru recognized that she was the only viable Hokage candidate while Jiraiya was away. 89 90

When Tsunade confronted Orochimaru, he exploited her hemophobia through Sharingan genjutsu that confronted her with blood and the images of Nawaki and Dan. Once mentally incapacitated, she was seized by Uchiha Shūichi’s Four-Cornered Windmill Sharingan and placed under his control. 91
