Background & History

Uchiha massacre

Konoha's relationship with the Uchiha Clan had become distant after years of Danzō's instigation. Many ordinary villagers regarded the clan as arrogant and were largely indifferent when it was annihilated. Uchiha An subsequently returned to the village under a new identity, using his familiarity with Konoha to blend in without suspicion 3.

The Uchiha are identified as one of Konoha's founding families. Their destruction became the foundation of An's campaign against the village, which he repeatedly declared had no right to exist without them 31 67.

Akatsuki invasion and destruction

After recovering Nagato, Uchiha An provided Akatsuki with unusually detailed intelligence on Konoha's personnel, techniques, and weaknesses, helping prepare the invasion 48. When the assault began, Konoha mobilized its ninja rapidly and directed civilians toward defensive fortifications, but the attack devastated the village through missiles, summoned creatures, the Six Paths of Pain, and the Nine-Tails 49 50 75.

During the invasion, An attacked the Root base on Konoha's outskirts, killing its defenders and using his complete Susanoo to rupture the underground complex 52. Nagato's final assault left Konoha leveled, with a giant meteorite remaining at the site; its casualties among ninja and civilians could not immediately be counted 81.

Fourth Great Ninja War

Konoha's destruction encouraged Iwagakure to invade the Land of Fire, while other nations also pushed deep into its territory. Despite its earlier losses, Konoha continued resisting attacks from the four great nations 81 97 99.

The Fourth Great Ninja War ended with Konoha signing separate treaties with Kumogakure, Iwagakure, Kirigakure, and Sunagakure. The settlement required territorial concessions and reparations, and left Konoha's delegation devastated while the other villages celebrated 179 180.

Political transition and reconstruction

Sarutobi Hiruzen publicly resigned as Hokage and declared that Konoha's ninja would henceforth swear loyalty to the Daimyo. Uchiha An later exposed that Hiruzen himself had proposed this arrangement to obtain the Daimyo's reconstruction support 180 182.

Jiraiya subsequently acted as the Fifth Hokage and pushed policies requiring ninja clans to share benefits with commoners and lower-ranking ninja, contributing to Konoha's recovery 219 220. He later formally relinquished the Hokage title to Kyōya, the Daimyo's representative, while Kazuma assumed responsibility for Konoha's affairs in Kyōya's absence 229 231.

Daimyo resources and clan donations allowed buildings and shops to reappear rapidly, but the recovery slowed after those supplies were depleted. Kyōya then proposed war against smaller neighboring countries as a means of securing further resources, a plan Jiraiya opposed 231 232.

Hyuga Clan civil war

The Hyuga Main and Branch Families' conflict escalated into open violence when the Branch Family rose up to eliminate the Main Family and end its centuries of control 203. Nara Shikasuke ordered Konoha's forces to intervene, judging the survival of the Main Family necessary for village security and military strength 203.

The incident exposed Konoha's political divisions: the Main Family argued that it had obeyed village rules and supported the Hokage faction, while the Branch Family was treated as a rebellion despite its grievances 208. Later accounts describe Konoha as having sided with the Main Family and exterminated the rebelling Branch Family members 253.

Neji Hyuga's return

Neji returned to Konoha with the Tenseigan, attacked the village's flying forces, and fought Wood Style Jōnin and Itachi within the village 282 284 285. The battle caused further damage and civilian resentment toward Itachi, worsening Konoha's already fragile morale 287.
