Background / History

An is an Uchiha survivor whose hatred of Konohagakure is rooted in the clan’s extermination. He views the village’s political treatment of the Uchiha as the cause of the clan’s radicalization and believes the clan could only have been legitimately subdued through overwhelming force rather than manipulation. He particularly resents Itachi’s role in the massacre, while still considering him part of the Uchiha clan. 12

After killing Sasuke prematurely, An regrets losing the chance to use him against Itachi. He targets Naruto as the Nine-Tails jinchūriki, kills Naruto’s ANBU protection, and abducts Naruto while disguised as Itachi. 4 6

An’s conflict with Konoha draws Akatsuki’s attention. Following his confrontation with Itachi, Pain accepts him into the organization as its eighth member under the codename North, while forbidding further internal conflict between the two Uchiha. 33

His ambitions later expand beyond personal vengeance. He establishes himself as the central figure of a revived Uchiha force, repeatedly summons the dead Uchiha through Edo Tensei, and ultimately declares his intention to restore the clan permanently through the Rebirth Technique rather than join Madara’s Moon Eye Plan. 66 130 262

Personality

An is intensely vengeful, proud, and dismissive of Konoha’s authority. He considers the Uchiha’s destruction an unforgivable injustice and repeatedly frames his actions as retaliation for a village that failed—or refused—to protect the clan. 12 90

He is also calculating and opportunistic. An uses disguises, exploits village politics, recruits useful allies, and values bloodlines, ocular powers, and strategic information. His pursuit of strength is practical as well as obsessive: he seeks implants, experiments with dōjutsu combinations, and pursues Sage Art training when time permits. 35 86 110 161 167

Despite his cruelty toward enemies, An displays protectiveness toward people he considers his own. During the Sunagakure battle, he prioritizes Haku and Karin’s safety; he later treats Karin, Haku, and Xinyou warmly and grants Karin and Xinyou Uchiha status through Sharingan transplants. 129 160 161
