Background / History

Itachi attacked Uchiha An during the Uchiha clan massacre, catching him in genjutsu before stabbing him through the chest. An survived, while Itachi's slaughter of An's family and the wider Uchiha clan became the source of An's hatred. 1 35

He later admits that he understood Sarutobi Hiruzen and Danzō were using him. Nevertheless, he believed eliminating the clan would avert civil war and preserve the village's peace. He considers An's survival his greatest failure, as it led to the disasters that followed. 236

As an Akatsuki member, Itachi was partnered with Scorpion. During Akatsuki's assault on Konohagakure, he attempted to report urgent intelligence to the Hokage but was treated as an enemy because his spy status was not widely known. When An attacked Konoha with the Nine-Tails and resurrected Uchiha clan members, Itachi openly aided the village. He contested An's control over the Nine-Tails despite the severe strain this placed on his Mangekyō Sharingan. 66

Itachi is defined by an extreme village-first mindset. He evaluates people and outcomes as parts of a larger whole, placing Konohagakure's interests above clan loyalty, personal benefit, and even family. This logic allowed him to justify the Uchiha massacre as a way to prevent a larger conflict. 102 236

He is deeply susceptible to guilt surrounding Sasuke and the Uchiha clan. Seeing Sasuke's severed head breaks his composure, and An repeatedly exploits this grief to provoke him. 30 31
