History

Jiraiya spent years searching for the Child of Prophecy, partly because he doubted Konoha could bring peace to the ninja world. He considered helping Tsunade lead the village, but learned that she had been killed before he could decide 93.

When Uchiha An captured Kakashi for Hiruko’s Absorption Ritual, Jiraiya pursued them and summoned Gama Bunta to hold An off while other Konoha ninja attempted a rescue. An’s Wood Style killed the accompanying ninja, and Hiruko absorbed Kakashi despite Jiraiya’s efforts 112 113 114.

Jiraiya arrived at Sarutobi Hiruzen’s side as the Third Hokage lay dying. Hiruzen entrusted Konoha to him, making Jiraiya its de facto Fifth Hokage before a succession ceremony could be held. Soon afterward, An killed Bunta and challenged Jiraiya’s belief that enemies could come to understand one another. Jiraiya nevertheless offered reconciliation to prevent further deaths 212 213 214.

As Hokage, Jiraiya pushed through policies that redirected clan benefits toward ordinary residents and lower-ranking ninja, helping Konoha’s recovery but provoking the ninja clans. When they challenged his authority, he defeated their jōnin at the Valley of the End without killing them. He rejected his adviser Nara Shikasuke’s proposal to confiscate clan wealth and instead sought contributions for reconstruction 220 223 224 225 228.

Jiraiya later relinquished the Hokage title as Konoha swore allegiance to the Daimyo. He continued working on reconstruction, but opposed Kyōya and Kazuma’s plan to attack smaller ninja villages for resources. His opposition brought him into battle with Itachi, whom he tried to persuade to abandon the planned war 231 233 234 236 237.

After breaking Itachi’s Susanoo, Jiraiya confronted Kazuma and Mizuki over their use of Impure World Reincarnation. Mizuki ambushed him with a controlled Tobirama body, piercing his heart. The Toad Sages could not heal him; Jiraiya died thinking that he had never found the Child of Prophecy 238 239 240.

Appearance

Jiraiya has a tall frame and long white hair that he can extend and control in combat. Markings appear on his face when he enters Sage Mode 113 222 223 234.

Personality

Jiraiya is protective of his comrades and reluctant to accept deaths as the price of political or military advantage. He refused to endorse the Uchiha Clan’s massacre, tried to spare Itachi further manipulation, and opposed a war against smaller villages even when Konoha needed resources 215 216 236 237.

He initially struggled with the political demands of being Hokage. Though willing to use force against clan jōnin who challenged him, he restrained his attacks and declined to treat their actions as grounds for mass punishment 219 223 225 228.

Sage Mode

Jiraiya refines Sage Chakra with the help of Sage Shima and Sage Fukasaku, who perch on his shoulders during battle 113 212.

• Sage Art: Triple Rashomon — Summons massive gates to defend against An’s Lightning Dragon 114.
• Sage Art: Super Giant Rasengan — Jiraiya successfully merges Sage Chakra into a greatly enlarged Rasengan, breaking Itachi’s Susanoo. The attack heavily exhausts him and the two Toad Sages 237 238.

Toad techniques

• Summoning — Calls giant toads including Bunta and Gama Hiro to fight alongside him 112 222 236.
• Toad Song — A sound-based genjutsu performed with Shima and Fukasaku that immobilizes listeners. It requires preparation and can be avoided by preventing the sound from being heard, as An does by piercing his eardrums 113 223 224.
• Combined oil, fire, and wind attack — Jiraiya supplies Toad Oil while Shima and Fukasaku add fire and wind, igniting An’s Wood Style forest and later surrounding Itachi’s Susanoo with intense heat and steam 114 237.

Hair manipulation

• Lion Combing Technique — Extends his hair to bind and strike opponents. Against the clan jōnin, Jiraiya controls its force to injure them without breaking bones; he later uses his hair to intercept a Wood Style attack 223 238.

• Sarutobi Hiruzen — Jiraiya’s teacher, who entrusts him with the Hokage position on his deathbed 212.
• Sage Shima and Sage Fukasaku — Toad Sages who help him gather Sage Chakra and fight beside him. Shima also encourages him when An’s taunts shake his confidence 113 217 237.
