Background / History
Hongjun first appears beneath the Enlightenment Dao Tree while completing the Dao Method of Slaying Three Corpses. Having noticed Ye Jun living on the tree, he considers him only an ordinary monkey. He takes the Enlightenment Dao Tree into his Myriad Heavens Auspicious Cloud, declaring an affinity with it, and rejects Ye Jun's attempt to become his disciple because of Ye Jun's inferior Origin/Foundation 1.
After becoming a Saint, Hongjun opens Zixiao Palace to preach the Dao to the Three Thousand Red Dust Guests. His sermons spread Great Dao Laws, guide cultivators through breakthroughs, and establish three routes to Sainthood: Merit, Slaying Three Corpses, and Proving the Dao by Force. He also reveals that only nine Saints may exist beneath the Heavenly Dao 5 7.
At the end of the first sermon, Hongjun accepts the Three Pure Ones and Nuwa as disciples, then accepts Jieyin and Zhunti as registered disciples. He gives the remaining strand of Primordial Violet Qi to Old Ancestor Hongyun, directs the Witch Clan to Houtu as the key to its future, and appoints East King Duke and Queen Mother of the West to govern male and female immortals respectively 7 8.
His early dismissal of Ye Jun becomes a persistent source of conflict. Ye Jun publicly questions him about the Enlightenment Dao Tree, rejects a later offer of discipleship, destroys a strand of Hongjun's Divine Sense within the Qiankun Cauldron, and openly refuses to bow during the second sermon 8 20 41.
During the Witch-Demon War, Hongjun intervenes only when the Demon Race is on the brink of destruction. He blocks Pangu's attacks, breaks the Witch Clan's and Demon Race's formations, injures Zhu Rong for challenging him, and decrees that the Demon Race shall rule the heavens while the Witch Clan shall rule the earth 52 53.
Before merging with the Heavenly Dao, Hongjun gives powerful treasures to several disciples and opens the Treasure Distribution Cliff to all cultivators. Ye Jun steals the cliff's treasures, prompting Hongjun to strike at him with purple lightning and later continue obstructing his reincarnation 94 95 96. Hongjun ultimately merges with the Heavenly Dao, ending his direct oversight of the Primordial World 93 106.
Appearance
Hongjun is an ethereal elderly Daoist with an immortal bearing, usually appearing in purple Daoist robes and surrounded by auspicious phenomena.
- Wears a light-purple or purple Daoist robe 52 64.
- Possesses an otherworldly, calm demeanor and often stands with his hands behind his back 1 64.
- Appears upon a cloud bed or cloud carriage amid purple qi, dragon roars, phoenix cries, and flowing Dao Rhyme 5 93.
- A purple-gold bright moon manifests within his Natal Golden Wheel 93.
Personality
Hongjun presents himself as calm, impartial, and devoted to spreading the path of Sainthood. He patiently answers the listeners' questions after his sermons, appoints figures to oversee the Primordial World, and intervenes to stop the Witch-Demon War from escalating further 7 8 53.
Behind this composed image, he is highly protective of his authority and reputation. Ye Jun's refusal of discipleship, repeated disrespect, and acquisition of opportunities Hongjun overlooked provoke anger and regret. He attempts to suppress Ye Jun through East King Duke and the Qiankun Cauldron, covertly pressures him during the second sermon, and seeks to punish him after the Treasure Distribution Cliff is stolen 8 19 20 41 95.
He is also calculating and long-sighted. His distribution of the Immortal-Slaying Sword Formation to Tongtian is portrayed as part of a broader design connected to the future weakening of the Heavenly Dao after his merger with it 94.
