Background / History

Origins and the First Heaven-Mending

Nuwa became Hongjun’s disciple after the Dragon-Phoenix Initial Tribulation. Yuan Feng, the first phoenix, became her nominal mount to lessen the Heavenly Dao’s suppression of the Phoenix clan. Despite their unequal cultivation at the time, Nuwa respected Yuan Feng as a fellow Daoist and never rode her for tens of thousands of years 163.

The first collapse of the heavens resulted from instability in the Primordial World, not the destruction of Buzhou Mountain. Nuwa repaired the breach with Five-Colored Stone, while Yuan Feng secretly helped locate the material and lent her Dao power. Even the Sanqing did not know about this assistance 4 163.

The expected method of supporting the repaired sky required severing the North Sea Black Tortoise’s four legs. Beichen escaped that fate by forging four Mysterious Sky Divine Dragon Pillars and presenting them to Nuwa. She installed them at the world’s four poles, completing the repair; the Heavenly Dao Merit was divided equally between them 1 2 3.

Nuwa then offered to accept Beichen as her disciple, recognizing both his promise and the advantages of his connection to the Great Dao. He refused and instead suggested that he could advise her on Sainthood. Their subsequent conversation clarified the world’s history and established an ongoing acquaintance 3 4.

Purple Cloud Palace and Beichen

Nuwa nearly missed Hongjun’s lecture after spending decades preparing her makeup out of respect for her master. Beichen gave her his front-row cushion, and she promised to remember his kindness 31 32.

When the Sanqing later attacked Beichen, Nuwa intervened. She argued that his surrender of the cushion had upheld Hongjun’s dignity, then used her treasures to repel and restrain her senior brothers when they rejected her explanation 42.

Her access to Beichen was not unconditional. When she urgently sought him at the Three Immortal Islands, he declined to meet her because he was entertaining Zhao Gongming and Yunxiao, postponing their discussion until the next Purple Cloud Palace gathering 88 95.

Becoming Demon Ancestor

Bai Ze urged Nuwa to unite the Demon Race against the Twelve Ancestral Witches. She initially hesitated because Hongjun had warned his disciples against entering the Witch-Demon Tribulation. Bai Ze’s suggestion that leadership could provide a path to Sainthood nevertheless persuaded her to consider it 74 75.

Nuwa chose to pursue merit rather than abandon her laws and adopt Hongjun’s three-corpse method. She also believed that she and Fu Xi owed protection to their fellow demons. After Bai Ze and Ji Meng returned, she accepted the title of Demon Ancestor, while Fu Xi became Demon Prime Minister 99 104.

Her hope of obtaining enough merit through sole leadership faltered when she learned that Dijun, Taiyi, and Kunpeng would also lead the Demon Court. She realized that Beichen had said sufficient merit could produce Sainthood—not that leading the demons would necessarily provide it. In the established court, Nuwa directed the broad course of offense and defense and participated in major decisions, but remained equal in status to its other principal leaders 105.

During the conflict, she offered a Supreme Grade Innate Spirit Treasure for East King Duke’s death after he allied with the Ancestral Witches. She also killed Shebishi with the Red Embroidered Ball after his poison caused widespread casualties among innocent creatures 108 122.

Humanity and the Witch-Demon War

After again consulting Beichen about Sainthood, Nuwa created humans. She became deeply absorbed in their affairs and increasingly distanced herself from the Demon Court; creating humanity did not immediately make her a Saint 139.

Before the final Witch-Demon battle, she moved vulnerable human tribes toward the southeast continent, away from the Demon Court. Their frailty and slow migration meant she could not prevent every death, but she sought to avert humanity’s mass extinction 140.

Nuwa nevertheless fought in the final battle, joining Fu Xi and Kunpeng in targeting Xizi’s gathered spirit within the Twelve Heavens God-Demon Array. When the formations collapsed, she used dozens of Innate Spirit Treasures as a barrier. Half were shattered before she escaped; Fu Xi’s body was destroyed, and his surviving soul was subsequently protected by Taishang Laojun 142 144.

Afterward, Nuwa healed injured humans while searching unsuccessfully for her brother’s soul. She left her Buzhou Mountain palace to devote herself to humanity’s fortunes and suffering 149 161.

Second Heaven-Mending and Sainthood

Zhurong and Gonggong’s battle broke Buzhou Mountain and caused another skyfall. With too little Five-Colored Stone remaining, Nuwa sought Yuan Feng’s help. Before traveling together, they swore sisterhood before the Heavenly Dao, with Yuan Feng as the elder sister 162 163.

Yuan Feng led her to Flower-Fruit Mountain, where more Five-Colored Stone lay ten thousand feet beneath a Spirit Stone. After obtaining it, Nuwa refined it in the Sky Refining Furnace and sealed the breach, saving humanity from the disaster 163 164.

The resulting Heavenly Dao Merit merged with Human Dao faith to form a golden Saint chair. Kunpeng attempted to claim it but was struck down by its power. Nuwa took the seat and became a Saint, receiving Beichen’s congratulations 164.

Immediately afterward, she refused Yuanshi’s demand that she help recover his Pangu Banner from Beichen, declining to make his dispute her responsibility 165.

Guardian of the Human Race

Humanity’s destiny sustained Nuwa’s palace in the Outer Heavens and numerous temples in the mortal realm. Her standing in the Primordial World was described as second only to the Heavenly Dao, above even Taishang Laojun, though she continued to reside among humans to manage their affairs 170.

Nuwa rejected Bairen’s proposal that all humans should pursue immortality. She held that humanity could endure through reproduction across generations, even though individual humans experienced birth, aging, sickness, and death. Under her care, the race continued to grow despite attacks and disasters 176 177.

When Beichen established alternating day and night, Nuwa recognized the improvement in human well-being, thanked him, and renamed the Moon Star Wangshu 189.

Appearance

  • Snake-tailed form: Appears during the first heaven-mending as a woman hundreds of millions of zhang tall 1.
  • Divine radiance: Enveloped in five-colored light while repairing the heavens; her intervention against the Sanqing produces nine-colored light and five-colored radiance 1 42.
  • Expressive eyes: Described with beautiful eyes and a divine gaze containing spiritual light 32.
  • Nine-Colored Immortal Robe: Wears it while escaping the collapse of the final war’s formations 144.

Personality

Nuwa combines generosity with personal ambition. She accepts sharing heaven-mending merit after initially feeling displeased, and sincerely sees potential in Beichen. Her offer of discipleship also reflects a calculated desire to benefit from his Great Dao connection 2 3 4.

She is cautious rather than easily manipulated. Bai Ze’s praise delights her, but she continues to weigh Hongjun’s warning against her duty to the Demon Race and the possibility of Sainthood. She later acknowledges that her interpretation of Beichen’s advice was mistaken 75 105.

Her compassion can become lethal resolve. She kills Shebishi in anger at the deaths caused by his poison, while her care for humanity leads her to organize evacuations and personally heal the injured 122 140 149.

Nuwa places great value on family and gratitude. She becomes openly playful around Fu Xi, grieves his apparent loss, and respects Yuan Feng enough to replace their nominal master-mount relationship with sworn sisterhood. Her loyalty does not prevent her from setting boundaries with senior disciples such as Yuanshi 77 144 163 165.
