Background / History
Recognition of Beichen
While in seclusion, Hongjun sensed Beichen’s Zenith Heaven Golden Immortal tribulation on the Sun Star. After calculating Beichen’s origins, he identified him as a North Sea Black Tortoise with Chaos Godfiend origins, favored by the Heaven and Earth Great Dao and beyond ordinary Heavenly Dao control. Hongjun regarded him as an “aberrant variable.” 7
Dao-Demon War
Hongjun joined Great Immortal Yang Mei, Old Ancestor Yinyang, and Old Ancestor Qiankun in the campaign against Demon Ancestor Luohu. Although the four entered the Immortal Slaying Sword Formation together, Hongjun was described as the weakest of the four in direct strength. 22
After Qiankun and Yinyang self-destructed to weaken the formation, Hongjun deployed his three corpses to suppress three Sword Gates while personally holding the remaining gate. He then used the Myriad Heavens Auspicious Cloud to break the Immortal Slaying Sword Formation and help bring about Luohu’s fall. 24 25
Hongjun failed to claim Luohu’s three remaining treasures—the Twelve-Grade World-Destroying Black Lotus, God-Slaying Spear, and Nine Demon Pagoda—because Beichen stole them while concealed by Great Dao techniques. He spent a thousand years searching Mount Sumeru and the wider Primordial World without finding the thief. 25 26
Sainthood and Union with Heaven
After abandoning his fruitless search, Hongjun entered final seclusion at Purple Cloud Palace. His stated goal was to perfect the demonic path within the Heavenly Dao, attain Sainthood, lecture to the Primordial World, form karma, and ultimately govern the world. 26
Hongjun later completed his Heavenly Dao path and merged with the Heavenly Dao. Though he withdrew from ordinary worldly affairs, he remained capable of appearing whenever the greater trend of the Primordial World changed. 114 118 175
Personality
Hongjun is deeply concerned with authority, control, and public legitimacy. He avoids actions that would damage his standing among the cultivators of the Primordial World, even when he wishes to eliminate Beichen. After Beichen intimidated the Sanqing outside Purple Cloud Palace, Hongjun declined to intervene because Beichen had not actually attacked the palace, allowing Hongjun to present himself as magnanimous while distancing himself from the conflict. 44
He is calculating toward both disciples and enemies. He gave the Sanqing Quasi-Saint Pills and used their confrontation with Beichen to advance his own interests, while privately viewing Hongyun’s Hongmeng Purple Qi as a means to provoke Kunpeng into killing him. 40 44 113
Despite his self-control and Saintly bearing, Beichen repeatedly provokes Hongjun into anger. Hongjun struggles to maintain composure when Beichen disrupts his sermons, challenges his ownership of treasures, or distributes treasures to Hongjun’s disciples before he can do so himself. 34 113 114
Abilities & Skills
Three Corpse Manifestation
Hongjun can manifest three corpses—his Good Corpse, Zhishi, and Evil Corpse—to act independently.
- Each corpse suppressed a separate Sword Gate of Luohu’s Immortal Slaying Sword Formation. 24
- This allowed Hongjun himself to maintain pressure on the remaining gate while stabilizing the formation. 24
Heavenly Dao Authority
After merging with the Heavenly Dao, Hongjun possesses broad awareness and authority within the Primordial World.
- He can issue holy decrees that affect the structure and governance of the world, including the establishment of the Heavenly Court. 175
- He can perceive major disturbances and karmic consequences caused by Saints. 196
- He can suppress powerful phenomena, such as the innate solar radiance of the Ten Golden Crows inside Purple Heaven Palace. 38
- His authority is constrained by the need for public justification; excessive injustice or loss of support could cause a backlash against his union with the Heavenly Dao. 76
- Beichen’s Great Dao concealment and Water Dao laws can obstruct Hongjun’s deductions and prevent him from reading Beichen’s intentions. 26 180
Dao Lectures and Cultivation Guidance
Hongjun taught the Primordial World through three major lectures at Purple Cloud Palace.
- His lectures covered cultivation from the Grand Unity Golden Immortal realm to Sainthood. 112
- He taught the paths of severing three corpses and attaining Sainthood through merit. 93
- He bestowed Quasi-Saint Pills upon favored disciples to aid their advancement. 40
- He corrected the Sanqing’s cultivation paths by reducing them to the Grand Unity Golden Immortal realm before guiding them toward the Three-Corpse path. 97
Formation Breaking and Combat
Hongjun is a formidable combatant and strategist rather than solely a teacher.
- He studied and attacked the Immortal Slaying Gate during the Dao-Demon War. 22
- He used the Myriad Heavens Auspicious Cloud as his decisive trump card against Luohu’s formation. 25
- He was prepared to use his full power against Beichen if Beichen directly attacked Purple Cloud Palace. 44
- At the end of the story, he personally challenges Beichen in the North Sea, seeking to punish him for disrupting the Primordial World’s greater trend. 197

- Old Ancestor Hun Kun — Hongjun’s junior brother from Chaos. Hongjun permits him to establish a Dao Field in the West and supports his recruitment of Jieyin and Zhunti. 181 182
- Sanqing — Hongjun’s direct disciples. He grants them pills, Dao Treasures, and guidance toward Sainthood, but also uses them to preserve his reputation against Beichen. 40 44 97 114
- Nuwa — one of the Saints Hongjun identifies as his personal disciple; she receives Dao Treasures and Hongmeng Purple Qi from him. 114 181
- Jieyin and Zhunti — accepted as inner disciples. Hongjun is frequently irritated by their demands for pills and treasures, though he still grants them the Twelve-Grade Golden Lotus of Merit. 39 40 114
- Hongyun — registered disciple. Hongjun gives him Hongmeng Purple Qi but privately anticipates that Kunpeng’s resentment will lead to Hongyun’s death. 39 113
- Haotian — Hongjun’s attendant, later appointed Supreme Jade Emperor through Hongjun’s decree. 124 175
- Beichen — a Great Dao-favored aberrant variable and Hongjun’s principal rival. Beichen refuses Hongjun’s offer of registered discipleship, repeatedly challenges his authority, and ultimately forces Hongjun to acknowledge his status. 7 39 110 197
Story Role / Major Arcs
Purple Cloud Palace Sermons
Hongjun presides over the Purple Cloud Palace lectures, establishing himself as the foremost teacher of the Primordial World. Beichen repeatedly disrupts the first lecture through his Quasi-Saint breakthrough and openly refuses Hongjun’s offer to become a registered disciple. 34 39
During the second lecture, Hongjun teaches the methods of Three-Corpse Severing and merit-based Sainthood, while Beichen—already a Great Dao Saint—sleeps through the teachings. 93
At the end of the third lecture, Hongjun distributes Dao Treasures and Hongmeng Purple Qi before merging with the Heavenly Dao. Beichen undermines the event by gifting the Seven Treasure Gourds to several attendees, leaving Hongjun furious and embarrassed. 112 113 114
Governance Through the Heavenly Dao
As the embodiment of the Heavenly Dao, Hongjun avoids ordinary intervention while continuing to direct the Primordial World’s broader order. His decree establishes the Heavenly Court under Haotian and places the world under the joint governance of Heaven, Earth, and Man. 175
When Hun Kun arrives from Chaos, Hongjun welcomes him as a guest but carefully limits him to the Western region. Hongjun also sees Hun Kun as a potential means of countering Beichen. 181 182
Final Conflict with Beichen
After the Five Saints’ dispute threatens the mortal realm, Hongjun and Hun Kun move to confront Beichen. Hongjun blames Beichen for the accumulating karma and declares his intent to teach the Mystic Turtle a harsh lesson. 196
Hongjun challenges Beichen in the North Sea, asserting that the entire Primordial World belongs to him. Beichen’s Fifty-Fifty Great World gives Beichen the advantage, and the appearance of Yang Mei and the Heaven and Earth Great Dao forces Hongjun to accept Beichen’s formidable status and backing. 197
