Nature
Warp Space is a separate dimensional world containing the soul projections of all things in reality. Every real-world existence leaves an imprint within it, making Warp Space a shadow-like reflection of the material universe. Psykers draw upon its energy to cast spells. 5
It is also formed from the souls and emotions of living things. Consequently, Evil Gods defeated within Warp Space can eventually return so long as living beings continue to exist and generate the emotions from which the realm draws strength. 15
Time, distance, and chronology do not operate normally within Warp Space.
- Past, present, and future information coexist there; an Astropathic message may concern an event centuries old or an event yet to happen. 248 708
- A Chaos God exists across Warp Space's past, present, and future simultaneously, regardless of when it was born by material-world standards. 129
- Distance has no stable meaning within the realm; it is described as being both everywhere and nowhere. 1737
Soul Projections
Every living being possesses a soul projection in Warp Space, with stronger spiritual power producing a larger projection. Psykers are especially conspicuous, appearing to Warp entities like blazing lights. 5 828
Soul projections can mutate into Devil-like forms when rejected or distorted by their real-world counterpart. Devils are drawn to such projections and seek to transform their owners into monsters. 828
Soul Fragments
Soul Fragments are persistent projections of lost civilizations, knowledge, artifacts, or worlds. Unlike normal physical objects, their Warp Space projections do not perish when their real-world originals are destroyed. 7
- They can preserve ancient powers and knowledge otherwise lost to history. 7
- A sufficiently powerful Psyker can summon a fragment's vanished existence into reality, though doing so consumes power. 7
- Their self-contained nature prevents Warp demons from attacking them directly. 7
- Soul Walkers can conceal their own projections within fragments, making them difficult for external demons to detect. 7
- Fragment scale ranges from something as small as a house to something potentially as large as a universe. 7
Hazards
Psyker Corrosion
Psykers access Warp Space by drawing energy from it, but this exposes their soul projections to its inhabitants. Demons are attracted to active Psykers and may swarm toward them through the Warp. 5
Excessive use of psychic power causes Warp Space overheating and corrosion.
- Below 40% heat is considered normal.
- At 40–80% heat, Warp Space anomalies may occur.
- At 100% heat, a demon boss may manifest; corruption can turn the Psyker into a hostile enemy. 8
For Duanmu Huai, summoning the Soul Card Doll Maiden: Augis cost 60 of his 100-point heat limit, leaving him continuously at the overheating threshold without protection. 8
Warp Storms
Warp Space storms can sever interstellar travel and communications. During humanity's decline after the Golden Age, storms destroyed Warp travel routes, isolated colonies, and caused warships to vanish during transit. 15
Storms remain a major military threat: they can isolate entire star systems, disrupt Astropathic communication, and make navigation impossible even for experienced travelers. 1346
Space Hulks
Space Hulks are ships or conglomerated wrecks that drift between Warp Space and reality after disastrous Warp transit. They are regarded as highly dangerous because their interiors may contain Chaos entities, Xenomorphs, mutants, curses, and other contamination. 960 961
- Warp exposure can turn a ship's population into madmen or mutants. 962
- A Space Hulk may disappear into Warp Space and reappear in real space without warning. 961
- Time inside or around a Space Hulk may differ drastically from material-world time. 1340
- The standard Inquisition response is to maintain distance and destroy the Hulk rather than board it. 960
Travel and Communication
Direct Warp Travel
The Human Empire traveled by directly entering Warp Space and navigating its instability. This method is compared to sailing a dark ocean without reliable landmarks. 126
The Astronomican once served as a lighthouse within the Warp, guiding Imperial vessels through its darkness. It disappeared after the Black Hole Project and the collapse of the Human Empire. 126
Direct travel is dangerous and unreliable.
- A journey lasting seconds may deposit a vessel at the far end of the universe. 714
- Warp travel cannot guarantee precise arrival coordinates. 1850
- Teleportation also draws on Warp Space and is avoided by experienced Inquisitors whenever safer transport is available. 50
Webway
The Webway is a network of tunnels built by the Ancient Saints to traverse Warp Space without directly exposing vessels to it. It isolates ships from Warp erosion and external threats. 126
| Method | Warp Space Interaction | Known Limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Direct Warp travel | Travels through Warp Space itself | Vulnerable to storms, corruption, navigational failure, and hostile interference 15 1358 |
| Webway travel | Uses protected tunnels through Warp Space | Routes are fixed; enemies can potentially wait at known exits 126 1269 |
| Faster-than-light travel | Does not enter Warp Space | Safer but slower than Warp travel 1358 |
| Hyperspace travel | Does not enter Warp Space | Safer from corruption but can be intercepted or pulled out of transit 1269 |
Astropathic Transmission
Astropaths transmit messages by packaging thoughts and sending them through Warp Space to other Astropaths. Because Warp Space has no stable timeline, such messages cannot be assumed to describe present events. 248
Inhabitants and Manifestations
Warp Space contains countless demons, including higher-level entities capable of corrupting Psykers or drawing them into demonic service. 5
Chaos Gods are the dominant powers of Warp Space. They use believers, sacrifices, corruption, and portals to extend their influence into reality. 15 75
Warp entities require substantial energy to manifest in the material world and are suppressed while outside their native realm. Killing a manifested creature usually destroys only its real-world host or body; the entity itself may return to Warp Space and attempt another incursion later. 661 1109
Countermeasures
Untouchables
Untouchables are beings with no soul projection in Warp Space. Their absence appears as a black hole within the realm. 15 730
- They cannot use Soul Power. 730
- Their presence weakens or isolates the connection between Psykers and Warp Space. 15
- They are not targeted by Chaos Gods and Devils in the way ordinary souls are. 730
Reality Stabilizing Anchors
Reality Stabilizing Anchors force nearby reality back toward physical normality, expelling Warp Space erosion and unreasonable Warp laws. 489 1357
- They can prevent Warp Space from corrupting or transforming a local area. 489
- They suppress Soul Power, preventing Librarians and similar Psykers from using their abilities within range. 1357
- They were used to block a Chaos Fleet's Warp Space attack during the defense of the Aetheric Engine project. 1850
Blackstone Obelisks
Ancient Necron Blackstone Obelisks counter Soul Power and restrict Warp Space expansion. Cadia's obelisks confined the Eye of Terror until their destruction allowed its power to spread further into the galaxy. 1346
Destruction Magic
Destruction Magic can erase Warp Space itself, though doing so requires vastly more divine power than destroying material targets. Duanmu Huai states that it can destroy Warp rifts created by the Aetheric Engine and accelerate the dissipation of Warp energy. 930
History
| Period / Event | Warp Space Significance |
|---|---|
| Ancient Saints era | Warp Space was comparatively calm when the Ancient Saints built the Webway; Chaos Gods had not yet emerged, though lesser primal demons existed. 129 |
| Golden Age of Humanity | Humanity used Warp Space channels for interstellar travel and communication across its galactic empire. 15 |
| Warp Space storms | Storms shattered humanity's transport and communication network, isolated colonies, and contributed to the Human Empire's decline. 15 |
| Black Hole Project | Humanity used Untouchables to nearly collapse Warp Space and force the Evil Gods into slumber, devastating civilizations across the galaxy in the process. 15 |
| Eye of Terror conflict | The Eye of Terror became a rift between Warp Space and reality; Blackstone Obelisks restricted its expansion until Cadia's destruction removed that restraint. 1346 |
| Aetheric Engine project | Duanmu Huai began building an Aetheric Engine near the Eye of Terror to draw Warp power into reality, weaken Warp entities, and ultimately destroy the resulting contamination with Destruction Magic. 1278 1849 |
| Chaos breach of the Engine | Chaos forces engulfing the Aetheric Engine in Warp Space allowed the project to bypass its first three construction stages and move toward full activation. 1855 |
