Background

Chen Yan began as a collateral descendant of the Chen Clan who was suppressed by Lao Chen. His aptitude was initially strong but not extraordinary; his later Body Tempering aptitude came from sustained practice of breathing techniques such as the Eight Forms of Extreme Refinement. His defining advantage was a will that accumulated and strengthened through constant effort 896.

At Qingshan High School, Xia Tong overlooked Chen Yan in favor of Zhang Qingsi and refused Wang Yang's recommendation to teach him. Chen Yan later defeated both Xia Tong and Zhang Qingsi, establishing the beginning of his rise as a martial artist 16 424.

The Gong Family later imprisoned Chen Yan in a dungeon and attempted to kill him. He successfully underwent Limit Breaking Awakening there, an event that became central to his resistance against malice and future transformation 1006.
