Background and History

Childhood

Otto was born into the Apocalypse Family, one of Schicksal's three great families. Frail and chronically sick from birth, he possessed no combat talent and could not withstand Honkai Energy cleansing; his family instead prized the martial strength of his elder brothers. 552 554

His intellect manifested through invention. As a child, he built a mechanical bird capable of flight, only for his brothers to call it worthless craftsmanship, smash it to pieces, and grind the remains beneath their boots. The humiliation stripped away much of Otto's innocence and drove him toward ancient records, relics, and the underlying laws of the world. 555 556

The narration describes his mind as exceptional enough to attract the Imaginary Tree's attention. It speculates that, had he been born in the Star Rail setting, he might have become a follower of Erudition, joined the Genius Society, and attracted Nous's notice; this is a hypothetical assessment rather than an affiliation he actually attained. 544

Kallen Kaslana and the forbidden path

Kallen Kaslana was the first person to sincerely recognize Otto's intelligence, taking interest in his machines rather than scorning them. Her acceptance became the emotional center of his life. 556 560

When Kallen's father died, Otto broke into the Apocalypse sanctuary and appealed to Void Archives for a means of resurrection. He used its knowledge to mimic the Black Abyss White Flower, but the imitation lacked the true authority of life and death. Kallen rejected his attempt to violate that taboo, shattering Otto's belief that good intentions could justify his methods. 569 570

Void Archives was not simply providing an inadequate tool: the Light Screen revealed that it was deliberately guiding him toward violating a taboo to obtain data. Its mimicry could reproduce the weapon's appearance and apparent life aura, but not the core Authority needed for resurrection. Kallen slapped Otto and condemned his willingness to disturb her father's rest. 559 560

Afterward, Otto resolved to obtain knowledge and power beyond all rules, even if Kallen herself opposed him. He gained access to Schicksal's most restricted laboratory to conduct human experiments under the pretext of developing a cure for the Black Death. 572 574

The laboratory was designated Saint-137. Otto secured authorization by confronting his father, Nicholas Apocalypse, over his own concealed Honkai research. Nicholas stipulated that subjects be consenting death-row prisoners and ordered Otto's public disappearance under a false report of death from illness. Otto subsequently produced the first-generation Honkai Energy Suppression Serum through lethal experimentation. 563 564

Before Kallen's missions, Otto supplied weapons, restorative potions, and detailed tactical simulations. Their families formally arranged their engagement, but Kallen regarded him as a dependable companion in her effort to save the world rather than reciprocating his romantic devotion. 555

Pact with Void Archives

After Kallen became wanted by Schicksal, Otto returned to Void Archives not as its keeper, but as an equal negotiator. He offered it a vessel and energy for freedom of manifestation in exchange for the complete technological legacy of the Previous Civilization. 599 601

The bargain gave Otto access to knowledge and technology that enabled his long-term rule: advanced weapons, intelligence networks, artificial bodies, and methods of evading death. 602

During the negotiation, Otto rejected an offer of power that would have enslaved his soul. Instead, he identified Void Archives' confinement and desire for freedom as its true vulnerabilities. The artificial-human technology he obtained enabled lifelike Soul Steel bodies, including copies with independent consciousness, while communication, encryption, and weapons technology supported his worldwide surveillance and military apparatus. 590 591

Rise within Schicksal

Otto secretly used Kallen's justice-driven actions against Schicksal as cover for his own plans. While Kallen acted publicly as a masked thief who aided the poor, Otto exploited her reputation to undermine Schicksal's internal factions and dismantle the institution from within. 591 593

He calculated patrol routes, guard changes, and defensive energy nodes for her operations. On one occasion, he accepted public ridicule by presenting a laboratory explosion as a failed experiment, concealing its role in his successful plan. Observers later inferred that Kallen's discovery of human experimentation, imprisonment, and rescue had also been arranged to expose rival factions and present Otto as her indispensable protector. 579 584 585

Following Kallen's death, Otto eventually raised a coalition in her name. In 1491, he overthrew Lisa and Marcel's oppressive regime and became Schicksal's new leader, swearing to protect everything Kallen had sought to protect. 620

As Archbishop, he rebuilt Schicksal into a tightly structured organization with clear chains of authority and coordination. He processed at least three hundred memorials in eight hours while expanding research into Honkai, Previous Civilization relics, and countermeasures against global disaster. 621 622

He also exhausted Schicksal's reserves to accelerate Honkai research and sent elite fleets around the world to recover Previous Civilization relics. His research system sought to make Honkai a phenomenon that could be studied, predicted, and countered. 611

Kallen's execution and five-century obsession

Before Kallen's execution, Otto asserted her status as his nominal fiancée to obstruct the Castle Council's interference and pleaded with Nicholas to save her. Nicholas offered to commute her sentence if she fulfilled the political marriage condition, but Kallen refused to abandon her convictions for survival. 601 602

Otto's attempt to save her through a disaster involving Collapse Beasts instead placed innocent civilians in danger. Kallen rejected a rescue purchased through their deaths and continued protecting others. When a beast fatally wounded her, Otto caught her falling body; the narration identifies this as the moment his world lost its color and his former self effectively died. 533 537 606

His subsequent search for resurrection consumed centuries. He conducted fatal experiments on abducted or purchased orphans, manipulated the Kaslana bloodline, and treated Herrscher catastrophes as sources of data. After a century of unsuccessful research, he turned toward the Divine Continent and Immortal Chi Yuan, whose longevity and rumored ability to revive the dead offered another possible route. 539 613

Kolosten and the Imaginary Tree

Otto obtained the Authority of Domination and offered the Will of Honkai a regression of human civilization by five hundred years in exchange for the opportunity to restore Kallen. His dark-golden network was intended to consume humanity's accumulated progress, but his deeper objective was to bypass the apparent divine intermediary and alter the World Line at its source. 654 655 656

He used Durandal's resolve and Anchor Point to construct a golden bridge through Imaginary Space toward the Imaginary Tree. After extracting a stable Will Anchor, he confirmed that her contribution alone was sufficient and no longer needed her to accompany him to the Tree Heart. 658

Before departing from public leadership, Otto named his granddaughter Theresa Apocalypse as Schicksal's next Overseer. He then sent mass-produced clones against Kiana and her companions, openly announced his civilization-regression plan, and challenged them to stop him at Kolosten. The observers interpreted both the succession and the provocation as calculated measures to stabilize his retreat while making Kiana's strength serve his final objective. 660 661

As a False God, Otto confronted Durandal and Flamescion Kiana with Binding-based restraints and Energy Decomposition. They eventually broke through his defenses. Kiana's final strike carried the Authority of the Void and severed Otto's causal connection to the current world, giving him the release he had engineered rather than simply ending his plan. 682 684 689

Final sacrifice and Kallen's surviving World Line

Otto's ultimate solution was not to bring Kallen into the devastated present. He used briefly borrowed Authority from the Imaginary Tree's projection to form a new branch beginning at the moment of her death five hundred years earlier. In that World Line, Kallen could live without meeting him or inheriting the consequences of his obsession. 690 693 694 695

The price exceeded ordinary death or the destruction of a soul: the Tree would remove Otto from causality across past, present, and future, leaving a “concept of nothingness that never existed.” He voluntarily accepted that cost without demanding remembrance, reunion, or reciprocation. The new World Line's altered history does not establish that his crimes in other worlds were retroactively absolved. 696 703 704

His final journey also confronted him with hundreds of discarded versions of himself, representing aspects of his humanity abandoned during his five centuries of wrongdoing. The first accused him of destroying his former self when he ordered innocents executed “for the greater good.” Otto fought these manifestations and the Imaginary obstacles barring his advance. 706 707 710 712 713

Otto drove a golden spear into the Tree's projection and offered his accumulated sins to overturn the condition that Kallen must die. The Light Screen showed her wounds healing and the Collapse Beasts retreating as he disintegrated. Further depictions show him rebuilding his shattered divine spark through willpower, reaching the core, and sending light across space, time, and the Sea of Quanta toward her execution ground. 709 716

The later stages of this journey show Otto converting three Divine Key imitations into an incomplete mimicry of Void Archives to clear the remaining obstacles. Its backlash dissolved his body and consciousness on a conceptual level. Even after losing limbs and falling onto the golden road, he continued crawling and forged a final Heavenly Fire Holy Judgment from his remaining divine spark, divine blood, and will. 717 719

Otto is a handsome blond man with green or emerald eyes, usually presented in immaculate white-and-gold bishop's robes. His composed smile and refined bearing are central to his carefully cultivated image as Schicksal's compassionate savior. 429 433 650

Personality

Otto is defined by a single, overwhelming fixation on Kallen. He does not pursue power, status, or cruelty for their own sake; he treats all of them as tools toward giving Kallen life, happiness, or another chance to exist. This devotion becomes possessive, manipulative, and detached from Kallen's own wishes. 547 587 591

He is patient, highly rational, and willing to wait centuries for a favorable outcome. Otto consistently reframes people, relationships, institutions, and even himself as assets, costs, or pieces on a chessboard. By the end of his five-century plan, he is described as a machine sustained solely by obsession rather than an ordinary person capable of remorse or attachment. 556 649 650

His public demeanor sharply contrasts with his private conduct. As Schicksal's bishop, he is gentle, reassuring, and capable of inspiring total loyalty; behind that image, he calmly authorizes human experimentation, treats Valkyries as disposable resources, and maintains a world perpetually dependent on his protection. 650 651 653

Otto nevertheless displays rare tenderness toward individuals such as Vera, whom he teaches to read and allows to call him “Brother.” 622 623

His possessiveness includes intense jealousy: seeing an Eastern shrine maiden kiss Kallen provoked rage, humiliation, and killing intent. His preference for control also extends beyond romance; he regarded Siegfried's god-slaying strength as a threat because it lay outside his command. 448 595

At the end of his plan, Otto accepted a result in which Kallen would neither know him nor share a future with him. This did not erase his earlier willingness to sacrifice civilization, but it changed the final exchange: he surrendered his own existence rather than making reunion a condition of her survival. 675 694 695 704

He acknowledges his wrongdoing without consistently expressing repentance. Even when the Imaginary Beast embodied the people and hopes he had destroyed, he declared that he would not regret his sins because they had been committed for Kallen. 709 713
